I was thinking of how many appliances we have now that weren’t available and/or affordable when I was a child.
A lot of. Just off the top of my head
Air fryers
Microwaves
Dishwashers
Washing machines
Fridges ( remember a bucket with cold water and butter packs and milk in it ?)
Phones
Electric kettles, frypans ,
Clothes dryers.
How did we survive ? đŸ€·â€â™€ïž

Inside lavatory.
I spent happy holidays at my granny's cottage by the sea when I was a child in the 1950s.
She lit the range for cooking, no central heating. I don't remember any heating but there will have been a fire.

No gadgets at all. She taught me to iron on the table with the iron heated on the stove.
She chopped wood and grew vegetables. It must have been a hard life for her but pretty good fun for us.
We walked everywhere unless my uncle, a farmer, collected us in the old jeep and we spent the day on the farm where my cousins had a pony.😀

I think we survived because it took all our time to survive and there was little time for coffee mornings and the gym et.

After you had done all your housework with a bucket and mop and a carpet sweeper, there would be no time nor energy...nor need...for a gym. Even had there been one.
The meals were cooked in or on the cooker and you ate what you were given ie one meal, and very little between meals. So no snacks in a microwave or air fryer or catering for several different tastes.
Clothes hung on the line if you had one or draped over fireguards. And much less washing done. Fewer clothes and you wore them longer before a wash.
It was hard and must have been very very hard for a lot of people.
So hooray for what we have. Better sanitaty protection now...not that I need it of course. Lack of it must have made difficult lives even harder. What we had in the 60s was pretty awful. The 50s and 40s must have been grim.

And a good light fast hairdryer is my pleasure.

We didn't have a
Car
Washing machine
Shower
Central heating
Lots of clothes
Fast food

What we did have was
Lots of love
Feeling safe in our own country
Safe playing outside with your friends
Our own doctor where he knew all about you and you just went to the surgery and he saw you no appointment needed.
Home cooked food every night
Law and order

What we have lost
Our country and way of life
Respect for the police and law and order on our streets
Respect for our national monuments
Respect for our veterans

Feeling like a foreigner in your own country in some areas.

England especially London where I was born

Reading these posts, I am mindful of how people’s childhoods differ.

Long-life light bulbs. The old fashioned ones seemed to go POP every 5 minutes.
