If we don’t allow the Rosebank oil field go ahead we will buy more oil from abroad, how is that saving the planet?

The planet will save itself (until the Sun goes out). It's humans who can't seem to get their act together enough to save ourselves (the planet will probably say good riddance).

Go green. 💚

It’s so “ bleeding obvious”.

Our son lived in Pslo for 3 years, he got sick of UK friends banging on about how wonderful it must be to live in such a green, clean environment.
He had to explain to them that it’s due to us buying their gas and oil.

In any case, it takes ten years to get new drills on stream and producing enough power to be worth the cost. By then, there could well be several new methods of generating power. There is a lot of research going on.

The new Hinkley point C will be operational within 10 years & will supply 7% of UK energy needs as soon as the "on" switch is flicked.
If it was something that would start producing tomorrow, although opposed in principle I would be for it in practice - but anything that's going to take that long to come online & is so behind the curve - no, I'd rather they didn't (hadn't ) allowed it.

I’ve taken my eye off this ball. Why does the Rosebank oil have to be sold? Could this be renegotiated?
What is green washing the term for?
I’m amazed that we do so little so slowly about harnessing tidal power, if that’s the correct exprwession wh it prob isn’t

That’s my take on things GG13 (green washing you put it so much better then me) and you too SueDonim we are bankrupting our economy whilst China and India keep at it.

I’ve just spent two weeks in the US. Quite frankly, I don’t know why I’m bothering with recycling my rubbish, seeking out greener alternatives to household items and so on.

Whatever I do, it’s a flea bite against the prodigious amount of energy usage and the waste that goes on in the US. I guess I can say that morally I did the right thing, but it seems pointless when the big players aren’t standing alongside us

To answer the OP. Yes, I think Rosebank should go ahead. We are going to need oil for decades yet and we use cleaner methods of production than the likes of the ME or Venezuela, not to mention the social effects.

We feel the same in our household, but we still diligently separate everything and do our bit

The research has been going on for years. Too much talk and not enough action. All that hot air could have generated a lot of energy!

I agree

Because we're not actually going to get this fuel. It will be sold on the open market making a shed load of money for the oil companies. This is lose lose for the general population.

I think the term is green washing

We clean up our act, then import goods, fuel etc from around the world. All those air miles on polluting container ships…

If don't go ahead with it but generate our power some greener way, we won't be contributing so much to the changes which are making El Nino alter the Gulf Stream and send extreme weather to our shores. It might make little difference in our time (I'll be surprised if I am still around in ten years to see any) but our children and grandchildren may be glad we held firm. The children and grandchildren of Putin and Trump will probably be cursing them (or in Putin's case, blaming us for it, as they are being told that everything is the the fault of "the West".)
