Exciting, I love auctions but sadly have little of value to dispose of.

A bean .... not a vegan!

Luckygirl3 Thu 29-Oct-26 15:12:16

If I had sold both they would not have gone to the same home. Very different market. Lots of bows here ... but not worth a vegan!

It seems a shame to separate them, unless I have got the wrong end of the stick and the violin has another bow that goes with it.
It's quite amazing what treasures we may have around the house.

Good luck !

£950 just for the bow?! That's a rare bow! Hope the bids keep coming in. Please keep us all posted when it's over.

Exciting indeed Luckygirl 🤞

This is exciting. Looking forward to the result.

How exciting! It’s always so difficult deciding what to do with these things, especially with the emotional ties

Excellent!

Sorry. Cross posts

I think it’s just the bow, Sago, as apparently it’s rare.

Your story reminded me of The Violin Maker’s Secret, which I’m reading at the moment Luckygirl.

Luckygirl3 Thu 29-Oct-26 13:02:39

The violin is worth about £3k.

Luckygirl3 Thu 29-Oct-26 13:02:25

No - it's the bow!! - just the bow.

Sago Thu 29-Oct-26 12:55:52

Luckygirl3

I am not selling the violin - it is a nice mid-19th century German one but not particularly rare in any way so I will hang onto it for now as who knows a great GC might take up the violin when I am gone.

I don’t understand, I thought it was in the auction.

MaizieD Thu 29-Oct-26 12:55:21

I do hope your bow goes to someone who will cherish it Luckygirl3 grin

£13k - wow!

The bow has a crack under the frog so needs some repair so its value is less than it would have been, but I am not grumbling.

My OH took it to school on the bus and generally treated it as a boy might, so I am just glad that it still has some value.

I have never been involved in an auction before - I am on tenterhooks here. I wonder what else I can sell!

Aldom Thu 29-Oct-26 12:30:10

Good luck Luckygirl3. I can't wait to hear how the auction goes.
Years ago three of my late husband's books sold for £13, 000!!

Aveline Thu 29-Oct-26 12:23:18

Oh yes. Please do. Are you selling the violin too?

Vito Thu 29-Oct-26 12:19:04

That is very exciting, keep us posted 😊

Luckygirl3 Thu 29-Oct-26 12:11:58

My OH was a good violinist and after he died and I was clearing stuff out I asked a local musician to take a look at his violin as no-one in the family plays and I needed to decide what to do with it. He told me all about the violin, but then said the bow was rare and sought after and had value.

So, after much thought, I decided to sell it as it is apparently a joy to play and it was just sitting in my spare room unused.

So a big international specialist string auction house has taken it on and it has been out there for the last 24 hours - auction ends later today.

Would you believe the latest bid of £950 - for a bit of wood!!!!

I am sure that my OH had no idea of its worth. It's quite exciting!
