Good morning Micheal and all GN's from a very dark, still ,morning in North Yorkshire. Absolutely not a sound nor a sight outside. Am hobbling about warily, as I started to sneeze this morning, without any warning, and can only be very careful, as if I sneeze unexpectedly I can really make my back worse than normal, which right now I can do without any extra hassle.
I have radio 3 unwind on very quietly and it has some lovely birdsong on at the moment which is quite relaxing and cheering. This morning I have my diabetic eye test, and am the first patient of the day at 9am. If I had the option I would go right now as I cant concentrate on anything until that is dealt with. It is that horrible mixture of feeling that my eyesight has not deteriorated and that it should be fine, but I cannot know in reality and their machines may tell a different story. At the moment my ability to drive is so vital to allowing me to get around and I cannot help worrying that there could be something I am unaware of, that might be bad news. As there is absolutely nothing I can do about it, I cant calm the worries down, so it will just have to be getting through the time and hoping for the best!
I had a very quiet day yesterday, not even thinking of going to Pately show, but they had a good day for it. The weather was warm but windy, and it took me some time to be able to get into the shower etc, so I was working away in my dressing gown. Once I had my shower it helped my back a bit, and I looked at the various things happening, but polished up my halo a bit, by deciding to have a quiet morning, catching up on jobs and in the afternoon I would go to this little village, where they were having a service and an afternoon tea to raise funds for work on the church.
Well you may smile at my version of quiet morning! After all the basic showering dressing and eating breakfast, I set up my ironing board and ordered all the ironing by heat requirement, and put the clothes horse out to put stuff ironed on. Then my version of quiet was to have the tv on, but silent with subtitles on, the radio on firstly radio 3 and then onto private passions , and then sat their ensconced in ironing, which I have made quite an inroad to over the morning, with Downton Abbey on the box , to distract me. I didnt finish the ironing of course, but still ended up with a choice of 3 pairs of trousers, several T shirts and a large amount of underware and so forth all giving me a satisfactory amount of choice of items to wear, and as it was still warm and windy, I had my yellow linen trousers and yellow and white T shirt to wear for the trip in the afternoon.
It was a little village close to Thirsk on the A19, which I have passed the sign to many times , but cant remember visiting before. The parish hall was set up for afternoon tea and there was a buzz of people already there. A lot of lovely home made food on offer and they had pictures of the church at various times in its life with pictures of weddings christenings and funerals all taking place there. I love that sense of belonging to a place, and their was a beautifully iced cake especially for the anniversary. It always seems a shame to cut into the beautiful work of hours done lovingly. but the lady who was given the honour of cutting the cake spoke , and she reminded me of my mother at a similar stage. She had worshipped at the church and married there, and been the queen cake and food maker over many years, and as she said this was the first time that she had actually not made a single cake for an occasion. That over the years she and a band of ladies had made wonderful home baking, which was sold on Thirsk market each week, raising funds for the church, in that quiet steady manner of parishioners everywhere who do their bit. I enjoyed being part of the occasion and of course bought raffle tickets for some lovely prizes , which naturally I didnt win anything!! As a teacher , the children used to ask me what number I had in the raffle and try and get the next number to it, which often won!
On the way back I called into Thirsk for fuel. Ouch ouch! I have already tried to only use the yellow peril for local journeys and am being very careful about trips out and about in the car, but that is actually my one real luxury to be able to travel about, I never smoke, drink rarely, and try to take picnics rather than eating out, apart from my luxury of a coffee and an occasional apricot croissant at Cafe Nero. Dont buy new clothes and replace things only when they break, so being able to get up to Swaledale or out in the country is both my luxury and brings me joy in life, so I shall keep going as long as possible.
I didnt do a great deal in the evening, watching Antiques road show and throwing some out of date things out, and adding things to the calendar to make sure I dont miss appointments, so all in all was quite pleased with the day, and managed to find my prescription sunglasses etc ., ready to take them with me today, and check that they are hopefully still valid and ok, or that will be another big bill for different glasses.
Not made any plans other than the eyetest for today, as what happens there will govern the rest of the day, but first I must find my phone, which I have no idea where I have put it. Probably under some paperwork, and hope I havent thrown it into the recycling with the papers etc., I know it must be here as I used it yesterday in the flat but so far no sight of it. Double drat! Ah well I have a few hours to find it so fingers crossed.
Hoping all GN's have a good day, with few worries unsolved and that the weather lets us all enjoy an autumn day , with chances of finding conkers and scuffing through the leaves.
