Elf - a favourite Christmas movie no longer?

I see Elf is high on the list of favourite movies at Christmas. I watched it recently and wondered how come the PC brigade haven’t got into a lather about the scene where a grown man dressed as an elf walks into where a young woman is having a shower and starts singing ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’ to her?

❄️?

I’m afraid I’m another who avoids any film with Will Ferrell in it, so have never seen Elf. My favourite Christmas film is ‘Arthur Christmas’!

Never seen it and never heard of it.

Never seen it ... don't want to!

We don't mind Elf, it is rather silly but that's why our GC love it (along with Home Alone)
My favourite is Muppets Christmas Carol tchsmile

The song I can no longer hear without a shudder is Thank Heaven for Little Girls. Gigi seemed all right when it first came out, perceptions change!

The Irish nuns at my school always called them ‘fillums’ grin

So glad it's not just me that wants to scream "film, it's called a film!! ' I don't hate all things American but there' s something about the word 'movie' that sounds childish to my ears.

Chance would be a fine thing to watch anything worth watching this xmas from what my tv mag shows.
Call me scrooge! but can't wait for the new year to watch what I learn are to be 'new drama's' Lets hope they are new and not made up from bits and pieces of previous ones. Don't get me going on comedy. Unfortunately real comedy died with the death of those who did not need to use anything which could 'offend 'to make me laugh.

I've never seen Elf as I can't stand Chevy Chase and certainly won't be watching it now. The Americans have a different sense of humour to us don't you think? A bit sleezier and adolescent - not my cup of tea.

A firm favourite here which always makes me laugh. That one and National Lampoon Christmas Vacation and of course It's a Wonderful Life are a must watch at this time of year.

Craftycat Thu 20-Dec-18 12:58:37

I saw it for the first time over weekend- what a load of rubbish!
Mind you I don't really 'get' most American films- too purile.

I'll stick to Love Actually!

I watched Elf for the first time this year and thought that it was good. I'm not keen on Will Ferrell but quite a few people have said it is their favourite film so I thought I would give it a try.
The whole point of the shower scene was that he did not realise that it was not acceptable. Baby its Cold Outside was a lot less creepy than the video in the original film when the man keeps grabbing her arm and physically restraining her even if not aggressively. If you listen to the song without the video it just seems flirty to me.
I'm not really a American ones that are on daytime TV at the moment.

Carly,

I’m glad I didn’t say movie instead of film

But it’s not encroachment from the USA, it’s he UK and other countries embracing US culture.

We are not victims.

Nanny27 - I feel exactly the same. They're FILMS not movies. Just part of the gradual American encroachment on the English langugage, sadly.

EthelJ Thu 20-Dec-18 12:12:03

Nanny27 movie grates on me too. Not sure why but I much prefer Film.
My favourite Christmas film is 'it's a wonderful life' old fashioned and sentimental maybe but I don't think it can be beaten.
I saw it for the first time 10 years ago expecting to hate it but loved it.

goose1964 Thu 20-Dec-18 11:35:32

the point of the scene is that he's so innocent he doesn't realise what he's doing is inappropriate it's all about the singing

sweetcakes Thu 20-Dec-18 11:31:55

I'm the same it makes me cringe and I get that embarrassed feeling so now I just turn over!

I recorded Elf on Sunday to watch later, just because I've never seen it before and it was high on the ratings. I'm wondering if I should have bothered now!

Grampie Thu 20-Dec-18 11:07:38

A Christmas Story is our family favourite by far:

www.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/

Very warm and funny for both adults and children.

Willow500 Thu 20-Dec-18 10:45:31

We watched it the other night and thought it was quite good.

We still love National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation though but my favourite and a must when it's on is the old black and white Christmas Carol.

humptydumpty Thu 20-Dec-18 10:39:57

No, leave it alone, Elf is wonderful! - but my favourite Christmas movie by far is The Muppet Christmas Carol.

SillyNanny321 Thu 20-Dec-18 10:39:41

Christmas is not Christmas without at least once watching the original Grinch with Jim Carrey. My best Christmas film!

Nanny27 Thu 20-Dec-18 10:33:36

Moving slightly off topic and prepared to duck when grans call me old fashioned but... why do people call films movies?

sue01 Thu 20-Dec-18 10:20:40

Curious the sudden interest in Elf. At the beginning of the week the Co-Op staged free cinema screenings of it all around the country. And now it's on TV too. Can't understand the fascination personally !
