With or without suet?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 06-Dec-19 12:02:27

With vegetarian suet, but not a lot of it.

Witzend Fri 06-Dec-19 12:15:48

Always trad suet here.

SueDonim Fri 06-Dec-19 13:23:35

Veg suet in mine.

Callistemon Fri 06-Dec-19 13:26:02

I posted on the other thread!

Mary Berry uses butter, not suet, in hers.
Sorry, can't link on here but easy to Google.

I've never tried it but her Christmas cake recipe is good and her recipes always seem to work.

How are the drunken birds?

Callistemon Fri 06-Dec-19 13:26:55

We probably only use suet because mince meat used to contain meat

Happiyogi Fri 06-Dec-19 14:23:26

I'm really disappointed that all the major supermarkets seem to be still using palm oil in their vegetable suet Christmas products. Just listed as "palm oil", no mention of sustainability. It's time they stopped.

I do Mary Berry’s version with butter and it is lovely.

Gonegirl Fri 06-Dec-19 17:06:33

Yes, I am going to make some of the Mary Berry one with butter.

This is actually an ongoing argument with son who says no one makes mincemeat with suet nowadays. (What does he know? hmm)

aggie Fri 06-Dec-19 18:11:50

I use suet , but only half the recipe , I accidently threw the whole packet in ! so I doubled the fruit etc lol

SueDonim Fri 06-Dec-19 18:22:27

Gonegirl I saw you mention feeding mincemeat to the birds (is this a post about another thread???). Today I put out the remains of a home-made loaf of bread for the birds but they have studiously been ignoring it. As my daughters would say ‘RUDE!’ grin

Gonegirl Fri 06-Dec-19 19:42:25

I don't know what these birds are coming to Suedonim. They haven't touched my mincemeat yet. Spoilt brats. hmm

SueDonim Fri 06-Dec-19 20:53:23

Honestly, the birds of today. Snowflakes, all of ‘em! grin

AllotmentLil Fri 06-Dec-19 22:21:45

Butter in my mincemeat.
Our birds are the same at the moment!!

SueDonim Sun 08-Dec-19 18:48:14

Most of the bread is gone now - some of it eaten by two different cats that appeared this morning. One of them ate so much I fear it may have gone home and deposited half-digested remains on its owner’s floor. blush

I used veg suet the last two years, disappointed, this year, is see a new recipe from Feast magazine, it says veg suet or butter, I used butter, it’s good

notanan2 Sun 08-Dec-19 19:50:11

I would chose with but have too many vegitarian friends and family to do with batches so use veggie suet

Callistemon Sun 08-Dec-19 20:29:10

Mary Berry melted the butter but I would think that you could freeze it and grate it.
although melting could be easier.
