According to Christmas cards our neighbours think I am called...

I have a cousin called Lyn, or Lynn, or maybe Lynne.... The reason I’m confused is that when she still lived at home someone (presumably her mum) would ring the changes in the Christmas card they sent us. Comes to something when your parents don’t know how to spell it!

My name has been incorrectly rendered with an 'e' for as long as I can remember, by my sisters!

In an email I often sign my name off, only to receive the reply with my name spelled incorrectly. You can see the different spelling of both names in the same glance!

Fortunately I don't mind at all, I just find it disconcerting that people don't actually notice the name-change.

We kept one from last year wishing us a merry Christmas but not naming us.
It was unsigned so we thought we'd solve the mystery this year by checking the writing.
So far no luck.

We all know each other here, send cards, and have a Christmas get together, we have received cards now from all of them, but on Friday had a hand delivered card through the door from Doris and Alan.We don’t know a Doris and Alan.

It just said Happy Christmas on the envelope, so they don’t know us either!

These have made me laugh. Just glad I’m not the only one.

When we moved here, 30 years ago I had a long chat with my neighbour about how we both had the same name, spelt with an "e" at the end and both said how annoying it was when people left it off.....every year I get a card with the "e" missing from my name. Grrr

When I was young my name was very unusual. Nowadays it is much more popular. It can be spelled with a 'y' or an ' i' in the middle. It really annoys me when I sign a card and the recipient send one back using the alternative spelling. Do they not read the card ?

My mother often called my second husband by my first husband's name - but I'm sure it was deliberate!

An old friend of mine always calls my husband by the name of a previous boyfriend. Good job he is not sensitive.

I called someone by the wrong name for years (not that I saw her often).

And always have to think whether someone is Carol or Carole (we know several), Martin or Martyn (three of them), Lynda or Linda, Neve, Neeve or Niamh etc.

I must make a proper list when we take the cards down next year.

We had that once with a new neighbour. I swear he said his name was Brian with an ‘I’. Later, he asked why we kept calling him Brian when his name is Keith! Very strange!

Well, after we’d lived in our road for a few years-DDs about 10-ish when we arrived-I passed neighbours from a few doors away when out with DH. Called out “hello Mr Little”! He cheerily replied with my name. DH was mortified cos Little wasn’t his name but yes, you’ve guessed it, he WAS little! Dear daughters were great Mr Men fans so it must have been from them! So then I had to start calling him by his proper name!

I laughed on this one, my name is Helen but neighbours of 40 years plus still address Christmas card as Ellen but know I am called Helen!

We tracked the rumour back to the neighbour we thought had started it. “Well you do have a lot of children” he said. Three! We’re hardly the Osmonds!

That was my first question too, EV! Mormons it was (thank goodness).

My actual name is quite unusual and absolutely, most definitely nothing even remotely like Maureen.

I found out yesterday via FB that I’ve been sending my nieces cards to an old address for at least 4 yrs ?. I think she must of forgotten to tell me about a change of address, or maybe not ?

Sure he said Mormons ? ( roaring with laughter here ) hahahaha.

Not a name thing, but at a neighbourhood party the host said he'd offer us a beer, but knew we wouldn't accept, us being Mormons.

We have lived here over 30 years and are not, nor ever have been, Mormons. And we do like a beer.

We once got a card from our next door neighbour addressed to me and Brian. My DH is not called Brian but from that day forward it is a standing joke in our house that I must be having an affair with Brian!!

There's another family with the same surname in our village. They're totally unrelated and have lived here nearly as long as us. However, some people still swap husbands and wives
around and we get cards e.g. addressed to me and the 'other man'!

And most people can't spell my name correctly. I shouldn't complain too much as my grandmother couldn't spell it either!

My brother has never got my surname right in over forty years! He used to get the address wrong too until recently. I only give cards to a couple of near neighbours who are friends, really, as I've been cutting down drastically on the card list over the years.

We've been in our house for 38 years and my next door neighbour calls me by a name that isn't my name, despite me telling her several times.

One of my cousins was using my maiden name and misspelling my first name. She was not born when I got married in 1974.

This year I spelled out both names but my first name was still wrong- I give up.
