"All the trimmings"

I think I am stuck with having it (but not making it) as DD decided she lked it as well. So 2 portions will be made each year for her and DDiL

I didn't bother with bread sauce this year because it's only me that likes it. I missed having it! Will include it next year.

Purpledaffodil - yes bean salad is cold. Basically just green beans cooked and left to cool, green onions and a vinaigrette. When I first had it at MIL's dinners I was surprised to find the beans cold, but now I love it and it is a regular with a turkey dinner.

Now that the big day is over and leftovers are in the fridge we can sit back and relax a bit! Dinner was a success except for a 5 yr old GS who decided he wasn't hungry and was moping a bit. He usually has a good appetite, but had to be cajoled to finish.
Once he saw the Christmas log cake, he managed to finish his plate!

Many of our extras are at the request of other people present.
and the extras will be served with good plain food.

The basic food, turkey, ham, vegetables, stuffing, Christmas pudding will be served simply, no pimping of meat or veg by me. But cranbury sauce, parsnips and, this year, bread sauce (yuk) have all been introduced at the request of regular attendees.

No trimming at all for my family (of 4), just plain food as always.

Urmstongran, I'm originally from the midlands and I was brought up on sterilised milk too-known as 'stera'.Gives a completely different taste to tea, doesn't it? When I was still working some of my elderly clients gave it to me.Instant coffee made with stera was actually quite nice.It makes a good rice pudding too

Far too much for any family but the left overs go into bubble and squeak for the buffet on Boxing Day

I'm cooking the Turkey, Gammon, roasties, parsnips, sage &onion stuffing and gravy at mine. Then into the boot of the car and drive it to Daughters across the street and she cooks all the rest.
Trimmings? Pigs in blankets (forgot I'm cooking those as well), Stuffing, Bread Sauce, Cranberry Sauce, Mint Sauce? (one of Granddaughters ?), Apple Sauce, Yorkshire puddings (Grandson), and lots of lovely Gravy (forgot I'm making that as well).

We have stuffing wrapped in bacon, turkey, has to be home made roasties, home made yorkshires with white sauce and gravy and I've just realised I've forgotten the sprouts!
Hubby cooks and I get stuck with wrestling the packaging off the toys. I do make the Yorkshires though x

Turkey, ham, sausage meat stuffing, bread stuffing, sprouts, roast potatoes, roast parnsips, gravy and cranbury sauce. This year DD and DDiL have decided to make bread sauce, I am not enthusiastic, I do not really like it and I think we have enough as it is.

Afters? Home made Christmas pudding with brandy butter and whipped cream, with Yule log for those wo do not like Christmas pudding.

Yes white sauce here - another northern lass!

It’s bland (of course) but with rich Christmas pudding it’s perfect. My mum used to make it with a pint of sterilised milk (from a long thin glass bottle left on our doorstep).

My friend who had a fridge before we did as nippers, called sterilised ‘poor man’s milk’ as no fridge was needed.

Some interesting replies. I'd never heard of white sauce before!

And - I can't believe I forgot to get cranberry sauce. Oh well, I'm sure I'll survive (pretty sure I'm the only one who eats it, so it's only me that's deprived)

Yorkshires yum
weirdly mint sauce I like it with veg
in the past I did add onion bhajis for me, and everyone else then wanted one too

My dad always wanted white sauce with Christmas pudding, I prefer it as well with a dash of brandy or rum, but DH wants it with custard. Not as good in my opinion.

Roast turkey with chestnut and sausagemeat stuffings
Bacon rolls
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Maple glazed parsnips, carrots cooked in orange juice, and sprouts with chestnuts.
Christmas pudding with whisky sauce and/or cream, and alternative lemon posset with raspberries and shortbread for those not liking the pudding. All home made, relief to have it all prepared!

Forgot to say bread sauce is usually only with poultry and you can buy it in packets here, but it’s just not the same.

Canadiangran Bread sauce is milk infused with onion stuck with cloves and then thickened with fresh white breadcrumbs. Double cream is added to taste. Apparently using breadcrumbs to thicken sauce is an Olde English method! It honestly tastes much better than it sounds.
My brother lives on Vancouver Island, but as naturalised Canadians, they stick to the Christmas dinners of their child hood.

Loads of crispy roast potatoes, loads of homemade pigs in blankets.
Carrots and sprouts lightly cooked au naturel
Roast parsnips
Homemade stuffing, 2 kinds.
Cranberry sauce.
Lots of proper gravy.
That's it. Quite enough for my lot, and for me to manage on the day without getting into a major sweaty tizz in the kitchen.

GrandmaMoira, northern girl here, yes we do tend to have Christmas pudding with white sauce rather than custard.

Same as Minimoon but there has to be lashings of gravy.

I have never heard of bread sauce before and had to look it up. What does it go on?

We have basic mashed potatoes, corn and carrots, stuffing and a green bean salad. A bit boring, but if I detour from the regular menu, somebody will moan about it! My family likes to know that the dinner will be a menu they can count on to be the same.

We have the following:

Sage and onion stuffing
Forcemeat stuffing (must have lemon zest) or,
Pigs in blankets
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce

And no Christmas dinner would be complete without roast parsnips.
