I saw this on Mumsnet and wondered what grans thought. I always had a real tree, ceremoniously bought by my dad, bless him. My ex would make a meal of putting it up and be very unpleasant about it. My son took over and would help me put it up. I swore by a real tree. Then one Christmas a few years back I was very skint. I told the kids I wasn't going to bother with a tree but they weren't fooled. They combined their money and bought me a lovely fake one. I was so touched. The benefit is, I can put it up single handed now I live alone. I don't think I'll ever go back to a real tree. Which do you have and why?
We moved house earlier this year. So,wait for it….I bought myself a PINK artificial tree! Ever since I can remember I wanted a pink tree, and could barely wait to put it up.It’s up now and I love it! Why did I wait until so old to do it?! So what if it’s naff and chavvy,I absolutely love it!
The round Christmas Tree - don’t think it’ll catch on!
Oh Georgesgran I'm so glad you managed to post a photo! ? You never know houses are getting smaller. Maybe it would be suitable for that new flat pack apartment IKEA have recently brought out? Popular in Japan, or so the blurb said.
I am allergic to pine so artificial here. When I was a child my parents had a small silver tinsel tree indoors (it was the sixties and seventies after all) and, because we had a long porch, we had a real tree with coloured lights on outside. These days artificial trees can be very realistic but l have just bought a new slimline one as we don’t have a particularly big living room. I will have a smaller one in my music room from tomorrow with chocolate baubles on and in their last lesson of term my pupils will have a card and choose a chocolate decoration.
Fake because when I moved the room has a log burner and the first year with a real all the branches bent and my glass baubles fell off and smashed. In my other house, the tree was further away from the open fire and I had real as I love the smell of pine. I have even tried a candle to try and get the smell.
Last year's tree-everything but the kitchen sink on it!! A real tree for us -it's the smell that's the decider. This years purchased & in the garden waiting to come in-bought from the Range (as was last years) at £35 for a 7ft very reasonable
Always had real until a few years ago when I seperated and moved to a smaller house. I needed a tall tree but with a narrow spread and a real tree would have been too bushy. Also the faff of getting it in and then disposal afterwards. My tree is pre lit and once covered in decorations looks very pretty. It’s plastic but I’ve been using it for eleven years now so I thinks it’s carbon footprint is fairly neutral. Occasionally I get bored with the same tree so some years I use a big branch cut from my twisted willow and decorate that with lights and glass raindrops and a few feathery birds.
theworriedwell thank you. You understand why this fake tree is important to me ❤️. Some lovely photos of trees so many thanks for sharing your thoughts.
3 take yes in the loft but not bothered to put one up in over a decade.
Even though most fake trees are plastic they're far more environmentally friendly if you keep them for 10+years, I heard a few days ago that the optimum is 20yrs!
When I was at school, the 50s so not so commercialised, the nuns would find a broken branch from a tree, we would paint it white with a bit of silver on the tips and then decorate it with milk bottle tops. Red/blue/silver/gold and green, they'd be washed and sort of squashed into a bell shape and hung on thread. I often think they were the loveliest Christmas trees as lots of love and effort, nothing wasted and no tree chopped down.
Swapped a real tree for an artificial one some years ago due to the needle drop. Bought it at Marko about 5 yrs ago and replaced a lot of the baubles when Costco reduced them after Christmas. Won’t be putting it up this year as we’re spending Christmas in Lanzarote this year. Will just have to look at the attached photo instead ???
I've got an artificial tree, it is very modern and definitely wouldn't be mistaken for a real one. I thought if I'd go artificial I'd go the whole hog.

That is lovely, it must mean so much more than any other tree however splendid.
I have a lovely little artificial tree made from pine cones sprayed gold. However this year I fancy a small real tree in a pot. Sainsbury have some lovely ones for £10 each. They are very manageable in size and with a string of twinkly lights would look great. I can put the tree into the garden after Christmas.
