Christmas

presents to myself

Since I was widowed:

I buy christmas presents to myself, so I too can have some nice things to open on christmas day. I shall be going for a visit to one dd over lunchtime but need to feel a bit of excitement when I come home, otherwise the house will just be too quiet and an anti-climax

My advent calendar box has arrived, a sewing box from beyond the pink door. I can hear all the items rattle when I shake it. Exciting for me and safely put away until december 1st

Lifetime singleton here. I really enjoy Stuff. I don't buy myself things for Christmas - but my two dogs do..... I buy them presents too; and wrap theirs and mine; and unwrap them ceremonially on Christmas Day. It makes me smile.

Well, that's what we need in life. A Christmas toast, To Things That Make Us Smile🍻🥂☕

Cheers! 🥂🎁

I'm not sure why it puzzles people that others aren't exactly the same as them.
I find it puzzling that people are puzzled, I suppose.

This has always puzzled me on GN.

Are we all supposed to agree with one another, not express what works for some, doesn’t always work for others, ie; I think differently. Why give others a hard time simply because they don’t agree?

I too don't want more "stuff," but what matters is what makes us as individuals happy, not judging. Lots of interesting ideas up thread.

My treat will be to buy savoury food I don't usually buy or eat as out of usual price range. As I'm not keen on traditional c mas food will be raiding M n S for deli items, a decent bottle of wine not usual wine box, some posh ground coffee instead of the standard: and the de luxe item, pop into waitrose fish counter for undyed smoked haddock. I like twinkly lights too and will keep the heating on all day!

Maybe some luxury items in the food bank boxes?

Of course everyone thinks differently on all topics. Posts would be boring if we didn't have our own opinions - posting to yourself.

Giving is much more fun than getting

Ooh, I don't know about that... I like getting, not that I get much!

I rarely hesitate in buying stuff/experiences for myself, if it's within budget I'm 'avin' it - it's a right not a treat! smile

I cannot believe that I am alone in thinking that by my age (74) we all of us have too much stuff ?
I would rather treat myself (if that is the word, when all I am doing is spending my own money ) to an outing to the theatre, ballet or opera , or a meal , whatever, but better still treat the family!
Giving is much more fun than getting .

I agree, Maw, so my treat to myself is a month in the Canary Islands, and I suspect my gifts from the family will be €€€€€.

I was never a fan of Christmas, so the Bodach and I usually went away for about ten days. I like the more low key Spanish Christmas.

That's interesting Daddima regarding a month in The Canaries - I've been thinking about that.

Do you stay in an hotel or apartment? sunshine

And yet, posting one’s opinion often isn’t welcome, as we have witnessed on this thread.

I may well have decided on my big present to myself. I sew, I knit and I read and older eyes are deteriorating. A lamp, a very good floor lamp. A considered purchase obviously as this particular one costs a lot. I have sent for the catalogue and am hoping I get a voucher with it

It will be one lamp in and one lamp out to a dd. I haven`t quite decided yet but am seriously tempted. I would have to order it in december, to make it feel like a christmas present.

Forsythia Sat 29-Oct-22 16:33:41

You must tell us all about it. I’d quite like a good reading floor lamp.

MissAdventure Sat 29-Oct-22 16:52:35

The ones that mimic daylight are supposed to be very good.

I can't remember the company name.

maddyone Sat 29-Oct-22 16:55:28

That’s a brilliant idea karmalady. I don’t think you’ll be able to wrap it and put it under the tree though grin

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Oct-22 17:07:46

I bought myself an M&S Advent Calendar one years and that was good fun, opening the different boxes each day although I did end up giving much of the cosmetics away to younger family members (not as their Christmas presents!).

However, one thing I dislike is wrapping presents so I wouldn't wrap any for myself.
Why I dislike wrapping, I don't know, but I have to really make myself do it.

Do you ever forget what you bought, karmalady or where you put something?
🤶

kittylester Sat 29-Oct-22 17:11:38

We bought one of those Kl, as it seemed a good idea - that to me is household furnishings not a treat!

A treat is something I wouldn't buy normally.

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Oct-22 17:14:04

I treat myself to the face cream I like and yes, I know the Aldi one is supposed to be good but I like the one I've used for years.
(It's probably got the same ingredients.)

But I'm not wrapping it.

Nannagarra Sat 29-Oct-22 17:17:11

A floor lamp will be perfect for you karmalady.
👍

MissAdventure Sat 29-Oct-22 17:17:14

But you won't be surprised when you open it if you don't wrap it!

karmalady Sun 30-Oct-22 06:23:22

grin yes re wrapping it or not wrapping it, probably not

I am still sitting on the fence but it would be a perfect gift to myself. smile my eyes would certainly benefit and so would my frustration when I hunt for a dropped stitch.

Amount of use it would get? A lot

Oldwoman70 Sun 30-Oct-22 06:43:33

When DH was nearing the end he made me promise to buy myself something every Christmas as a gift from him. I have done so every year in the 10 years I have been alone.

karmalady Sun 30-Oct-22 07:38:27

Ahhh oldwoman, I truly empathise with that flowers

My husband used to spoil me with a nice thoughtful present at christmas and on birthdays and one morning he went out on a cycle training ride. We kissed goodbye and that was the last I ever saw of him, police at the door, air ambulance etc

He would have wanted me to carry on his tradition, I know that

karmalady Sun 30-Oct-22 07:39:43

one year I ordered flowers to myself, every month for six months

Aveline Sun 30-Oct-22 08:28:54

So sad karmalady
Great idea about the flower order btw.

Franbern Sun 30-Oct-22 08:49:01

Can I be a real bore on the subject of wrapping pressie (whether to yourself or anyone else). Please do NOT use any paper with glitter on it - this cannot be re-cycled. Some stores do sell Xmas (and birthday) wrapping papers which re-cycle.

Otherwise, why not use plain brown paper and get some colour pens and decorate ach individually.

To me the BEST present is NOT adding to the rubbish that cannot be re-cycled.

I keep a Wish list on Amazon - all sorts of things at varied prices which I think I would like to have, but are not essential. My AC can use this for Christmas, then - afterwards - I look at it again and may pick one item to purchase as a pressie to myself.

For Mothers Day and my Birthday I always tell AC NOT to buy me anything, but to use the money for a visit to me during the summer.

Harris27 Sun 30-Oct-22 08:53:59

I think this is a lovely idea and I’m so pleased that you have done this. It will help you through a difficult season and something you will look forward to and use. Well done you sound a very brave and practical woman. I wish you all the best when Christmas comes. X
