Christmas Songs that annoy you!!

I'm sorry but I really like All I Want For Christmas and my other favourite is Fairytale Of New York. Other than that it's carols. I can even remember the French ones we used to sing at school.

My favourite is Fairytale of New York, I can't stand most of the others. DD once left a job because they were playing Frosty the Snowman on repeat.
The other one I like is a well-known one sung by Bruce Springsteen I like it so much I can't remember the name.
My favourite carol is Silent night especially when DH sings it in German for me, he's not a singer more a talker.

I can sing Silent Night in German too Yammy . Stille Nacht. Well the first verse anyway remembered from my school German lessons. It's lovely.

Fifty years of Slade Christmases have long worn out the welcome of what was once quite fun (and the soundtrack of my first Christmas home from university).

I tend to go to ground at this time of year with a stack of good films and avoid the lot of them. Although I do enjoy Fairytale of New York, and the Greg Lake one, both of which are kind of anti-Christmas songs.

On second thoughts, one I quite like is A Spaceman Came Travelling, sung in Gregorian Chant, but it only just passes as a Christmas song.

My most hated is Fairytale of New York and I just don't understand why it was voted the favourite Christmas song of all time. Complete madness!

I'm quite fed up with most of the pop songs to be honest, been hearing them for 50 plus years, but the children need to get used to them I suppose (so they can get fed up with them in 50 years).

My very favourite is Sleigh Ride by the Leroy Anderson Orchestra. I also like Gaudete by Steeleye Span and most of the cheesy Christmas songs, of which there are many by Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Doris Day, Petula Clark, Andy Williams.

How about Stay by East17?

I love I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake but loathe all the others.

I dislike a lot of the ones already mentioned, as others have said, we’ve been listening to them for years.
I like Fairytale of New York, Driving Home for C by Chris Rea, Santa Baby but only the Eartha Kit version, and Mary’s Boy Child but again only the Matt Monro version. I’m also fine listening to carols.
But best of all, I like places with NO music, Christmas or otherwise, or should I say Musak.

I can't stand them either esp Stop the Cavalry anything at all by Cliff Richard and Paul McCartney....never understood his appeal. Classic FMdoesn't play Christmas music until Dec 1st and then it's lovely.

I like When A Child Is Born, have posted in the past DS was a baby then and I felt it was all about me and him.

Also like Fairytale of NY, the Greg Lake one and Happy Christmas, War Is Over, all sad and poignant.

Love O Holy Night. In fact, like most Christmas carols. I’m not a fan of Christmas, but when I go to our little church’s Carol Service, usually quite close to the big day, that’s when I feel a bit Christmassy.

I like listening to carols and singing them. However ALL christmas songs annoy me.

Fairytale of New York Song by The Pogues - I hate that one the worst!

Oh my - I had never heard The Sparrow until today. How could you subject me to it? I thought that you were my friends...

I confess to liking Driving home for Christmas Chris Rea and John and Yoko's So this is Christmas and even some of the old timers Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby singing White Christmas schmaltzy it might well be but somewhat easier on the ear than a red faced Noddy Holder bawling his head off year on year. Mistletoe and Wine the absolute pits Other than that love some carols, Away in a Manger sung by 5 year olds. My absolute number 1, In The Bleak Mid Winter.

ALL of them until Christmas week then they re allowed 😀

That's where DH learned it as well. He can't sing and never does but will sing that for me on Christmas Eve. I struggled through French and can faintly remember in bad French ,Ill la nie le Divine Infant,I hope someone can put me right.
DH then puts on The Boss belting out Santa Claus is coming to town.
I still laugh at "Little donkey", I remember as a very young teacher flogging it for a Christmas concert and another teacher saying "Will that bloody donkey ever get there?" A little voice who shouldn't have heard piped up, "Why didn't they use the taxis they had paid for?" I still giggle when I hear it.

I love Oh Holy night,I went to the Thursford show one year and the si gers and choir moving through the audience was magical,gave me goosebumps.
There us a whole generation or two,maybe three that never knew a christmas without slade and co,fun the first couple of years,I just grit my teeth and really dread going into shops where they are brainwashing into spending money just to get out quickly.
I am not a miserable old cow really,I prefer proper carols.

I forgot ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ - which I never liked until the teacher at my group piano/keyboard class (I attended for several years) gave us a not-too-difficult version to play. It included the words, and having never really listened before, I found some of them quite poignant.

It now lives inside my ‘Feast of Easy Carols’ book, which I bought shortly after taking up the piano again after a 50 year (!) gap - and didn’t find them ‘easy’ at all!!

That reminds me of my lovely Mum. She learnt German when in her fifties and used to sing Stille Nacht. So lovely

Terribull, I can guarantee that Away In A Manger sung by little kids will have me groping for the tissues!

Two non-traditional carols I really like - first heard when sung by dds in a school carol concert* - are The Calypso Carol and the Cowboy ditto. Lovely catchy tunes.

*Funnily enough this was held (years ago) in a public area of a large hotel in a Muslim country - Oman - where we were living at the time. Lots of Christmassy decorations - there was evidently no feeling that they shouldn’t be allowed.

Might add that one memorable year, Father Christmas visited the (English-speaking) school on a camel - a ceremonial one, kindly lent for the purpose by the Sultan’s Armed Forces. FC told the children he’d had to leave his reindeer at the nearby airport, because they didn’t like the sand!

I must admit I prefer proper carols too and Oh Holy Night is one of my favourites. It's been interesting to hear of everyone's likes and dislikes.
Looking back to when I had started my first proper job in London and heading into the station to catch the train home in the evening. I loved the Sally Army Brass band playing Christmas Carols - it was really festive and many commuters just stopped to listen and enjoy the music.
If there are any local churches offering a carol service I will always try and go or take myself off to Midnight Mass for my fix!!
