I bought one last year and it was nice, cost a fair bit but was sewing related. Afterwards I appreciated that I only had a few things that I would use, the rest went to the charity shop

I have just ordered a calendar for this year, entirely different

I bought the most beautiful hand knitted Nativity set on a car boot recently for £12. It is in a lovely big gift box. There are several versions but this is the Jean Greenhowe version which I think is the best. When I volunteered in a charity shop we had several donated and we could easily get £50 for a set so I know I got a bargain.

I bought it because years ago my Mum knitted the set and it took her many months. Every year i decorated a box to resemble a stable, draped ivy over it and added hay from our field shelter. Then put the kings, mary and joseph, the shepherds, donkey, sheep and baby Jesus and it went on proud display at Mum’s church.

When she passed away it was all wrapped in tissue paper with lavender in a lovely box. My niece adores Christmas so I gave it to her because I knew she would treasure it for ever.

So now I have one too.

Not an Advent Calendar as such, but an easy way to try new products, and relatively cheap compared to some beauty boxes. Gets good reviews. Not full sized products. And no, I don’t work for M&S 😁
I’ve just ordered one, depending on what I think of it, it’ll either be part of my daughter’s Christmas or I’ll keep it for myself.

I got my husband a whisky one last year. Thought it might be away of finding a new whisky. It was expensive and he didn’t find a replacement for the whisky he likes tht isn’t available anymoresad got the granddaughter one from body shop and she was disappointed too. So think I will give it a miss this year

I just like the traditional ones with pictures behind each window. It's a lovely way to count down to Christmas.

Same! I still get my dds a calendar each and we have one as well. No chocs, no gifts, just a nice scene with pictures behind the doors.

JdotJ no offence meant. I only saw your post after I'd hit send. Of course you're worth it. My daughter is too but at the checkout it hurts! 😂

I think advent calendars are of German origin over 100 years ago. (Sorry I'm out and about so can't check now.)

They are and I get a couple every year. They are beautiful. Not a chocolate in sight but that's fine

I watched several sewing YouTube vloggers open their advent calendars every day last December. They call it 'vlogmas' and the videos are there if you search YouTube under the sewing heading. Some of the things that came out were pretty poor yet the calendars can cost well over £100!!! It's very tempting but we shouldn't forget that the things in the calendars are not gifts. You have paid for them! I'm not saying that it's not worth it for the pleasure it brings but do choose wisely. In the past, I've considered buying a cosmetics calendar for my daughter but they can be really expensive for free-sample sized things!

I treat myself every year to the Fortnum & Mason Beauty Advent calendar.
It's fantastic.
I'm worth it ! 😉

I was looking for my children and grandchildren Beechnut nearly pressed the button, but then thought x6 it’s a bit £££!

I had the L’occitaine advent calendar two years running. I thought it was overpriced. The next year my daughter wanted to buy me one and I chose the Dove one and it’s really nice. I use all the little bottles and sachets when we go away for the weekend.

I have just spent an hour of my life looking at Advent Calendars 🙂🙂

So did I!

I saw one I fancied and then thought, NO don’t! 🤣

Because I never had an advent calendar as a child. (I don't think they were very common in the 40's and 50's) My eldest daughter always buys me one now and I love getting it! smile

Thanks for the ideas to customise the calendar and reuse it. I think I will do that for the DGCs this year and put little notes in with the days .... like a token for an ice cream when you want one, or a ticket to choose a cinema outing etc. That guarantees they will come to see me at least 24 times!

I love the traditional ones with nativity scenes.

I am snooty about the ones with chocolate... but admit I have made advent calendars as gifts. I used stacked matchboxes and it was years before the matches were used up - I know you can buy them empty now.
They were a bit like this image.

I notice "the works" has a quite nice wooden option.

I buy them for the dogs too!

Last year, after years of buying chocolate advent calendars for various children/grandchildren, I bought myself one. Just for fun.

Casdon Tue 12-Sept-23 22:43:40

My daughter and I rechristened them Janvent calendars, we bought each other one in the sale over Christmas and opened them one door a day through the dismal days of January. It was lovely, it really cheered me up to have a little treat each day.

Callistemon21 Tue 12-Sept-23 22:30:49

I haven't got any .... ☹

Urmstongran Tue 12-Sept-23 22:24:42

I’ve just been eating the chocolate ... 🍫

Callistemon21 Tue 12-Sept-23 22:18:10

I've been looking at the chocolate ones 😁
