I can't abide the song " fairytale of New York". I know its very popular but I just don't like it. In fact I will leave a shop if it is being played ! Do you really like it or just ordered to like it?

I love it, always have. Shane MacGowan was a poet, musician, flawed and lovely human. Rip Shane and what a wonderful ‘send off’ your funeral was. Anyone who hasn’t seen it and likes Fairytale - Google you tube and see the song performed in the Church at his funeral. Glorious

I was just telling my DH to watch this. What a fantastic send off.

No,I definitely don't like the"?song".The question mark because to me it's not so much a song as a "durge".Awful!Anyway isn,t Christmas meant to be a happy time? The birth of Jesus! So give me Cliff,s"cheese" any day. However if anyone wants sadness and misery, what about "Do they know it's Christmas" ?

I must live under a stone ! I’ve never heard more than a few bars , no idea of the story line , it does have a very catchy tune .

I love it too. My favourite Christmas song.

As others have said so much better than Cliff, Maria, Slade etc.

I like its catchy tune.

I find Cliff Richards Xmas songs far too slushy, but like Slades 😁

Never liked it. Husband loves it.

Shane’s entire funeral Mass was broadcast live on BBC and Sky news yesterday and it was a joyous send off involving a large group of singers and musicians. Fairy Tale of New York was sung and and some of his family rose to their feet and danced. It was a real celebration of his life. There were A list actors from around the world, the president of Ireland and many locals from the Tipperary town filling the church.

It isn't Christmas until I've heard Fairytale of New York. I always enjoyed The Pogues songs.

I like it but it isn't my favourite, which is Wham's Last Christmas.

Harris27 Sat 09-Dec-23 09:30:52

Love it.

NotSpaghetti

I have always loved it for its gritty poetic honesty.

Perfect 👍

kittylester

It's the first song on my Christmas playlist.

Louella what an odd thing to say.

Oldfrill what happens in marriages?

It's the first song on my Christmas playlist.

And mine!

I don't know why anyone would pretend to like it if they really didn't confused

suep1953 Sat 09-Dec-23 08:46:07

Love it, wonderful song

Marydoll Sat 09-Dec-23 08:41:02

DH plays it frequently and I can't stand it!

JackyB Sat 09-Dec-23 08:35:45

It featured on Soul Music a few years ago. Without listening to the programme right through, I can't say if this is where I heard the interesting story of how the record was made, but for those who love the song, have a listen to it anyway. Soul Music often makes me cry with it's personal tales of people who have a special connection to that particular piece of music.

I'm in the 'like it' camp, and always have been.

'Mistletoe and wine' sends me howling from the shops as does Slade's Merry Christmas'. I feel rather scared that I remember these being new!

I like it. It is a beautifully crafted song.

JackyB Sat 09-Dec-23 08:28:10

I think it's a great tune. I heard a programme once about how it was put together.

The words make me uncomfortable, but they are supposed to.

rafichagran Sat 09-Dec-23 08:26:01

I love it, always have.

Oldnproud Sat 09-Dec-23 08:21:33

I've always loved it.

Frankly, I have never discussed with anyone else (apart from my OH, who hates it) whether they like it or not, so no basis here for 'herd mentality'.
