Following on from the FTONY discussion, and a post by Grandmarie on the Christmas party thread, what Christmas songs do you like that aren’t so well known, or aren’t regularly played on the radio and in shops etc.

Links would be great.

I’ll kick off with

Same Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg youtu.be/-w8zLg4kNms?si=kkaK7ONGZdboNT7X

and Disturbed’s version of the Sound of Silence youtu.be/u9Dg-g7t2l4?si=WHskXbXgrKRmokvV

Thank you, JackyB, I love that song, the ending moves me to tears. All about love of family.
Tim Minchin is very talented, this was long before he did Matilda.
His baby daughter will be a young woman now.

Seeings as everyone is linking to their favourite songs - which is a good idea and it's is well worth listening to them - here is mine as mentioned above.

Sorry, the previous post had an incorrect link.

Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day which is apparently 16C. I first heard this at Norwich Cathedral at a relative’s Christmas wedding and the sound soaring to the rafters was wonderful. I’ve loved it ever since.

Not a Christmas song, but from the 2021 Hanukkah Sessions, Dave Grohl & Greg Kurstin’s cover of Manilow’s Copacabana is a delight

Thank you for reminding me, Deeda, of those school ones. I'd quite forgotten them and I am off to Google them and probably sing along ( thank goodness I live alone)

Bizeet's La marche des Mages. (the march of the Three Kings)

We learnt to sing this in our French lessons at school. It's a great tune.

Christmas Canon Of Peace.

Makes me cry when I listen to it.

‘There is no peace on earth, he said’.

Witzend Sat 16-Dec-23 09:57:51

You do hear it now and then, but I love the Calypso Carol, though never heard it until dds sang it at school. Such a joyous, jolly tune.

I adore Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar.

Me too! Another we sang at school, with the descant. Had a brilliant music teacher - more than once our choir was recorded by Radio 3, then the Music Programme.

Personent Hodie is a favourite from school for me too, and In Dulci Jubilo. Funny how the words stick in your head after all these years.
I like this one too. m.youtube.com/watch?v=teZaQUKjx24

^I haven’t heard Il est ne le divin enfant, this year, nor Personent hodie, both of which we used to sing at school^

Oh yes! Happy memories of the run up to Christmas..

Personent hodie is my all time favourite. Love the Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band version. Can’t do a link.

Witzend we always sang Il est ne le divin enfant at school and Quittez pasteurs. We also sang Oh come all ye faithful in Latin.

Witzend Fri 15-Dec-23 20:55:15

I haven’t heard Il est ne le divin enfant, this year, nor Personent hodie, both of which we used to sing at school.

I’ve heard German versions of Silent Night on Classic more than once, though, and the German Still, Still, Still.

Calipso

From a Distance , Christmas version by Bette Midler

Love that song. I first heard Cliff sing it and loved it, but that video clip gave it so much more meaning. Thanks for the reminder Calipso.

The Killers do a Christmas song every year to raise money for charity. The Cowboys’ Christmas Ball is one of my favourites.

When I got up this morning, I was thinking about ‘Jesus Christ, The Apple Tree’.

I switched on Classic FM, and guess what was playing?
