No, no indoor candles here unless there’s a power cut.

I do make ice lanterns for the garden though. An ice bowl made in the freezer and then out outside with a lit candle to welcome guests. I love putting berries and greenery in the ice to make a festive lantern.

Too true. The management of the block of retirement apartments which I inhabit very wisely forbids them. Many residents are taking cocktails of medications and sometimes doze in and out of a semi-awake/semi-asleep state, so candles of any description are banned outright.

Yes, I get one most years. Makes me sit for awhile amongst the rush of it all.

No. Huge fire risk, because people forget to blow them out. (Also I am not religious, so would never consider buying one!)

I've never had an advent candle but always got calendars for the children when small. The first one was a traditional one one with doors with pictures behind. We reused it many times though they expectd ones with chocolate as they got older.
This year I made an advent nativity scene for my grandchildren. There are 24 felt characters/items which velcro onto a background. The items are packed in an advent calendar box which originally had toiletries in it so it even smells nice. I did add chocolate coins but only from part way through the month so they won't have found any yet. I got so excited on Sunday to receive a photo of them after they opened the first box. I spent months making it and am looking forward to going to stay at Christmas and seeing them open the last few to complete the picture. Hopefully it will become a family heirloom.

I don't have an advent candle, but I do have an advent wreath with four candles. One for each Sunday of advent. The first candle was of course lit on Sunday, and I light it every evening at dinner time. The others will be lit on the comings Sundays and burn during the week too.

You are supposed to burn a 1/4 of the first candle on the first Sunday, another 1/4 together with 1/2 of the 2nd candle on the 2nd Sunday and another 1/4 of the first and 2nd and 3/4 of the 3rd on the 3rd Sunday on the 4th Sunday they get burned right down. Hope that makes sense.

The advent calendar IS a candle in this instance, you burn one day at the time which is marked accordingly.

Last night we lit our Advent Calendar for the first time this year. We have one every year. We went to church in the morning and of course the first candle was lit there, but at home we have one candle that’s supposed to burn down each evening to the next mark. We don’t have Advent Calendars, although we always got them for our children, but we always have the candle.

Have had one all my life every single Christmas, I love them, very Scandinavian. I also have an advent wreath where you burn the candles respectively on the 4 Sundays in advent. On the 4th Sunday all 4 burn down together.

My son nearly burnt down his historic college room at university with a candle. It caught the curtain. He was more upset because the candle was stuck in a yellow plastic duck he’d had since he was four, and that was destroyed. Amazingly, they let him stay in college (in another room while his original one was restored) and although he got a lecture he was not punished.

I’ve never trusted candles since, so I haven’t got an Advent candle!

Yes I have one and lots and lots of lights strung with greenery on mantelpieces. Got my candle from lakeland this year. Very pretty.

I buy them for each family, but they are so expensive I tried making my own. Using tweezers to stick the tiny gold numbers on was very fiddly, but one DGS chose it over a bought one, bless him!

It's a yes from me. We get a lovely chunky one with the numbers intertwined with snowmen and Christmas trees.

Love them. But must admit we forget now and then, usually the grandchildren remind us

One Christmas, a candle in my sister's tasteful home-made Advent wreath burned down to the greenery and it caught fire on the coffee table. DS1 leapt to the window and opened it, and I threw the wreath out with my bare hands. DS3 was asleep downstairs and was woken by the fireball passing his window and a now burning bush. Unaware of the circumstances, he quietly got up, fetched a bucket of water, and doused the bush. Then he went back to bed and back to sleep and we had no idea what he'd done until the next morning. I hope I have their cool heads with me in the next emergency, as I admit that picking up a blazing Advent wreath is pretty stupid.

I have an Advent Candle each year, it's rather hit and miss whether I remember to light it each day and if I have lit it I often forget to blow it out.
This year I found in IKEA a candle which has numbers on the front and you cross off the days.....I haven't remembered to light it yet!

We have four, arranged on the coffee table in an advent setting of pine sprigs, cones etc. During the first week of Advent, one candle is lit, the next week two until all four are lit.

It’s a ‘no’ from me.

Mother in law got our son and advent candle every year since he was born and into adulthood She's sadly passed away now, but we have continued the tradition with our grandson and great granddaughter ☺️

Similar to AuntieE, an Advent ring , but mine is with 5 candles - 4 for the 4 Sundays of Advent and the fifth one to be lit Christmas Day.

I’ve had Advent calendars in the past, but haven’t bothered with them for a few years now, and I’ve never had a numbered candle, though toyed with the idea, but think I’d either forget to light it each day, or, more likely, forget to blow it out before it had reached the next number so would be out of sync.
