First of all I hope you all had a lovely Christmas Day however you celebrated. But speaking personally I am relieved it is all over, all the pressure and hype starting in November, just for one day. I suppose as I am on my own it makes a difference, but even as a youngster I was never that keen, Somehow it never quite lived up to the expectations, sorry for being a Grinch, and it's lovely for the children, but surely I can't be the only one who feels like this- be honest

My lot do the elf on the shelf- it’s fun and they worry theirs would be the onky children in their class withiut a shocking elf tale to tell. (Before I’m shouted at - yes, they’re lucky to go to schools ….. I’ll say no more)
I had two sleep overs recently, two sets of children. The naughty elves set up a camp in the hearth of my log burner. Set up camp building things to sit on using kindling around a fire, ready to be lit, on which marshmellows were to be toasted.

The 9, 8, 6 and 5 year olds loved it. Not a hint of disbelief at what they found their elves had been up to

A bit of magic

I do love the idea of the elf on the shelf,I must say.

The things he could get up to!!

Oh no, I absolutely despise that! No stupid elf allowed in this house!

I'm the Grinch that kicked the Elf off the shelf.
He's in the Naughty Corner and that's where he's staying.

^Sorry, BA69 we're not halfway through yet^. 😀

The wise men have yet to arrive!

I'm hoping for a pot of gold on 1st January - well, £1million will do 😀

Yes, imagine having to think up 24 pranks 🤭

MissAdventure Sat 28-Dec-24 13:56:15

I can imagine lots of bleary, baggy eyed parents, finding late night elf adventures. grin

😁My DD’s do the elf on the shelf thing but it’s got out of hand and even when they’re tired at night when the grands are in bed the adults have to find outrageous pranks for the elves to do.One night an elf spilt a packet of cornflakes all over the kitchen floor and another night ate lots of Heroes and littered the lounge area with wrappers.

You really are determined to drag this out, aren't you 😂

I've explained why I posted and that my intentions were good, but clearly that's not enough. Never mind. I hope that others are able to accept my explanation at face value, either based on what they know of me from previous posts or just because it is the season of good will.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year when it arrives, to you too, Oreo, but I won't be responding to you further on this thread.

And I hope everyone understands that I use the word sad at face value, am not a youngster who uses the word to mean something else and don’t understand why you should choose to drag this out( with or without a laughing emoji). No poster wants to be either accidentally or deliberately misrepresented.
That’s fine if you don’t respond to my posts.

I have always disliked this period and have to fake false bon homie to keep the peace but I frankly wish they would all sod off somewhere and leave me in peace to enjoy mid winter alone

Be careful what you wish for!!

MissAdventure Sat 28-Dec-24 13:33:57

Ah, I didn't know that.

Nothing wrong with a little magic. smile
Is the elf idea from a film?

Yet another American import... hmm

My granddaughter loves the whole scenario.

MissAdventure Sat 28-Dec-24 13:20:07

If my grandchildren were little, I'd certainly have one, just because I'd have been very caught up in the whole concept as a child.
Elves, fairies, witches... I loved that kind of thing.

Yes and seeing as my boy is 17, I thought I vould put a can of Stella in the elfs hands.

Then put him with his head down the toilet,.
The elf, not the grandson.

Like this?

I had given my son cash to pick up my turkey from the butcher's. DIL was afraid he would forget it.

Christmas for us starts Christmas Eve when family come round for a fish platter. Then Xmas Day and the next 4 days we carry on celebrating, going for long walks and lots of good food. Guests always muck in with washing up etc. We just love it. Will start all over again for New Year.

You know we used say 'oh that is sick' meaning something was depraved or awful? The youngsters now say 'that's sick' to mean something that is cool confused

😆

MissAdventure Sat 28-Dec-24 12:38:03

My boys say "lit" now.
They've been sick now they're lit. smile

When I was teaching in East London until recently, we had many Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and other religions amongst the children. But they ALL did the Elf on the Shelf overnight to keep the Christmas magic alive! It was lovely to hear them ALL laughing and discussing it.

Such a pity this thread has become unpleasant.
We should all be able to celebrate as we wish, without criticism.

Yes, sadly a simple word got misunderstood.

I'd be craning my neck, trying to get a discreet look.
