Our son is spending Christmas with his girlfriend, they're both in England , we're in Scotland. What a nice surprise it was when they both were up here this weekend went out and bought food and cooked us a lovely meal, set the table and had crackers and wine, I thought it was very thoughtful of them to do that.

They sound like a lovely couple and what a treat to have a beautiful meal prepared and served to you. Very thoughtful indeed.

What a heartwarming, generous gesture pably ?
To have their company and share a meal is worth more than the most expensive presents.
It’s what the season of Christmas is all about.

Sadly OP, that puts so many younger people to shame, as we hear on both Gransnet and Mumsnet, about parents who are ignored at Christmas, or let down at the last minute by younger family cancelling.

I'm so happy to read that some younger people still think about others, and take the time and trouble to show them how much they care. You are very lucky!

So nice for you! Both my adult children are in their thirties and both have recognised they would rather have experiences than physical gifts these days. They took me out for a nice meal for my birthday although I got physical Christmas gifts as well as a stay with them. They told me not to buy toys for the children for Christmas as they already have loads of things but I bought mostly clothes so they had something to unwrap. I knew I wouldn't have the opportunity to give them a fun outing as I live 200 miles away. My DD bought them one gift to unwrap but is planning a 'Christmas Present day' for them in a couple of weeks when she is looking after them for the weekend while their parents go away together. Time with family is so much more valuable than stuff!
