What's the worst present you've ever received, either for Christmas, birthday or another occasion?

Mine was a small box of Dairy Milk, from a close friend of many years.... mine to him was a golf bag, to put his clubs in (he was an Estate Agent, so not on minimum wage, like I was then)

Two months after we were married in 1979, my husband bought me a vacuum cleaner for my birthday (‘you kept saying you needed a better one’). His Mum would have appreciated it - she was very practically-minded.
He has since learnt the error of his ways…
P.S. We’re still married after 43 years.?

My children were 1 and 3 years old when I received an electric nail varnish remover from my sister in law!! I didn’t have time to put the nail varnish on, let alone take it off! Years later I received an electric can opener, which would only open small tins!’

From my dearest, very best friend, one year she bought me a snow shovel!!! I consoled myself with the fact that we did have a lot of snow, as forecast, and there was a shortage of shovels!!! I never used it though, I lent it to my neighbour and he snapped it in half first shove!

Why has this ancient thread resurfaced?

Should there not be a "best-before date" on them?

I've had several that compete. Nearly every year we exchanged presents my sister bought me stuff that just flummoxed me. She has always hated my clothing so would buy me off the wall stuff that I would never, ever wear...she probably felt the same about the gifts I gave her!
One year, I received lingerie from my husband which cost him a fortune, which I didn't want and turned out to be allergic to. At the time I wanted some paving slabs to put in the front garden so it always looked tidy and didn't rely upon Mr ICHTB to mow.

My husband gives me milk tray every year. I only give him a present so he can't tell people I never gave him anything!

My mother in law gave me a far too big hideous
polyester nightgown and the next year a giant
loudly patterned acrylic
cardigan ,both labelled reject stock .

My sister in law said that she bought them from a bin in the local market for a pound each .

When we used to unwrap gifts MIL was on guard to make sure that we didn't tear the paper so it could be reused the next year .

A bottle of Vosene hair shampoo when I was about 12.
My mum said my aunty probably wrapped it by accident when she was distracted.
I'd love to know what she actually meant to give me?

Well ... A friend gave me a small package nicely wrapped and I saved it to open on Christmas Day ... imagine my excitement when I peeled off the wrapping to reveal a single small Quality Street chocolate ? What ? ...

Late M I L was given a bra by her sister (Who had a reputation for being "Careful"") We were all convinced that she had bought it, found that it didn't fit as she wished, so passed it on!

TWO G strings that never got worn?

I've heard of two couples who, for their amusement, pass to and fro, the same presents and cards, each year.

When I was 14, my mom gave me a small oil painting. A teenager doesn't want to receive a painting, believe me ))))))

My rotten sister bought my exDH a tie and hanky(just the one) set from Asda with the 89p ticket left on it. Same time I got a blue Delft plant pot cover......which I had given our mum a couple of years earlier.....!

We got married in 1976 and that Christmas my Mum bought me a pair of slippers (and a hat and scarf set). I was in my early 20s and thought slippers were for old people so I just stashed them in the wardrobe and thought nothing of it. However it turned out that slippers were going to be a regular festive pressie and soon a stack of slippers had accumulated in the wardrobe. OH found them about 12 years later and in amazement pointed out they were all size 4 and I take a 5 and a half. Fast forward to 2014 (38 years later) and I am still receiving size 4 slippers from Mum every Christmas but by now she cant drive, so I take her shopping. I find myself in Hotter with Mum buying a pair of slippers for myself in the wrong size. We then drive back to her place where I wrap the slippers up and address the gift card to myself, putting them in Mum's cupboard until Christmas day when I open them and exclaim in delight at the lovely slippers. It was her last Christmas and she never knew - bless her.

This is such a nice story and really speaks to the love you felt for each other.

Although the gift was as wrong as it could be, the act of giving and receiving here is so rich and meaningful.

I was (and still am) a great admirer of former President Obama. My well-meaning son recently gave me the gift of Obama's latest book, A Promised Land. It's 768 pages long. I made to to about page 400 and finally gave up.

No one should ever give anyone else a book that long!

The worse gift I've ever received was not receiving anything, but it was fine because now God has blessed me too receive so much!

My was a packet of Tesco disposable razors from Tesco, was speechless when I undid them and even more so when I realised he had put them in my shopping basket and I paid for them and wondered why he was changing brands

Many years ago we had new neighbours move into the house next door to us and we invited them, and their children, to join us on our usual Boxing Day family gathering. They were delighted to be invited because they had no family or friends nearby and knew no one in the area. They duly arrived bearing gifts. I got a box of Nivea for Men moisturiser wipes and my OH received a Zip Lighter. He didn't smoke! grin
