What's the worst present you've ever received, either for Christmas, birthday or another occasion?

Mine was a small box of Dairy Milk, from a close friend of many years.... mine to him was a golf bag, to put his clubs in (he was an Estate Agent, so not on minimum wage, like I was then)

From the ex, a wooden fruit bowl carved in the shape of an up turned open hand. Hideous enough you might think, but all the fingers were exactly the same length and looked positively deformed! Years later, I almost wished I had kept it as I longed to amputate three of the fingers and give it back to him!!!

A friend of mine got a travel mug and a clipboard for Mother's Day, which I thought was sad. She works in a care home.... (she doesn't use Gransnet so she won't see this)

I had a friend that gave me two pairs of shoes from Next - they were second hand and the wrong size. We were both hard up at the time, but I wouldn’t have ever done that to someone.

Another christmas present from a partner was a electric kettle - he was soon my ex partner.

Two padded coat hangers and a ten shilling note - from my well off grandmother!

I can't recall any really bad presents, but a friend of mine was once given a doggie pooper scooper for her birthday. And it wasn't a joke present, it was given in all seriousness.

From an ex, who I knew was mean, for my birthday 3 chocolates in a box and a plastic pound shop dildo. He was an ex from that night.

SunnySusie - that was a really lovely, touching story, as well as being amusing.

I always buy myself slippers in a size smaller than I need as they always stretch so much, so those slipper would probably be a perfect fit for you smile

How funny are these! For my 21st my MIL gave me a set of huge used silver soup spoons - they'd been in use in their guest house before I got them!

Things didn't improve over the years especially for our sons. One year they were each given a pair of motorcycle gloves - they were about 10 & 13 at the time and called them Walter Batty gloves grin

My fiancé bought me an umbrella. He then ran off with a man. Perhaps his boyfriend would have liked an umbrella.

For my first Christmas as a wife my MiL gave me a pair of oven gloves and a wrap around apron ( as worn by Hilda Ogden). I was so upset and she obviously realised, for thereafter she always bought me beautiful, personal, thoughtful gifts.

A boyfriend's mother once gave me a tool for putting holes in belts.

First Christmas present I got from my husband in 1979 was a stainless steel butter dish ? Glad to say improved over the years!

Both me and my sister got almost the same prezzies as children and we both had hair cuts really short. We were girlie girls and wanted real hair pony tails like our friends had.
So one Christmas we asked for wigs to make our dreams come true- We got them , but they were weird plastic ones that looked awful- Thanks Mum n Dad!

First indication that this present hadn't been given a lot of thought was the wrapping paper - holly, robins and the like. Fair enough if it had been a Christmas present, but it was for my birthday more than two months after Christmas. The contents? A pair of silver coloured tapered dinner candles. The generous donor of this odd gift? My husband (shortly before he became my ex). sad

My mum gave me a homemade sewing kit in a rusty whiskey tin a few years ago, I tried so hard to not show my disappointment but unfortunately she saw and was in a mood with me all Christmas Day. Before people point out it was a useful present, it was! However I am the middle child and was used to slightly “different “ pressies from my parents. I was so upset this particular Christmas because my eldest sister had been bought a bike and my youngest sister a really fantastic stereo stack unit. Anyway fast forward 35ish years later, mum came to ours for Christmas lunch, after the present opening I was given my present from my mum, opened it and it was a boot box which stated size 5. My mind immediately went back to my teenage years because mum was well aware I’m not a size 5 shoe, I got my fixed smile ready and to my utter joy the box held an iPad and not boots. Apparently when my sister was dying she felt brave enough to tell mum that her and my other sister were always upset because I was treated very differently than them. So all was good in the end

I have the best husband in the whole world and I love him to pieces, but one year he bought me the identical cd that he bought me the previous year and I didn’t even like it!

We got married in 1976 and that Christmas my Mum bought me a pair of slippers (and a hat and scarf set). I was in my early 20s and thought slippers were for old people so I just stashed them in the wardrobe and thought nothing of it. However it turned out that slippers were going to be a regular festive pressie and soon a stack of slippers had accumulated in the wardrobe. OH found them about 12 years later and in amazement pointed out they were all size 4 and I take a 5 and a half. Fast forward to 2014 (38 years later) and I am still receiving size 4 slippers from Mum every Christmas but by now she cant drive, so I take her shopping. I find myself in Hotter with Mum buying a pair of slippers for myself in the wrong size. We then drive back to her place where I wrap the slippers up and address the gift card to myself, putting them in Mum's cupboard until Christmas day when I open them and exclaim in delight at the lovely slippers. It was her last Christmas and she never knew - bless her.

We had a similar thing happen, Sheilasue;
My uncle and his wife gave us a tartan toilet bag, with a gift card to them from the previous year. When I sent a thank you letter I included the card-last present we ever got from them.
