Disclaimer: I have nothing against veganism. Each to their own.

I bought this (pictured) in Morrison's a couple of days ago. It's vegan mould and mildew remover! I looked at other products that tackle this job. All have similar ingredients, none of which are derived from animals. I bought this one because it was only £1. The others were much dearer for less product! I'm glad to report that it did an excellent job but really??? Vegan!

How will the planet be saved if the same population has to be plant fed? Surely the real problem is that there are just too many people?

If that was a response to my post, then it won't. And I didn't say it would. Knowing that there would be someone who said something like this there always is) I very carefully said 'if at least some of us do it'.

Probably everyone should cut right down on eating meat, but not everyone will - some will insist on their 'right' to eat it every day. So if some people never eat it, it will compensate for that a bit. And that will be good for the planet, which is all I said.

I don't understand why the fact that the word 'woke' started it's modern usage in the US means that it should stay there. Lots of English words have come in from elsewhere.

Yes chestnut, like the 'holier than thou' veganswink

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:54:27

And with Readymeals.for a changegrin

Chestnut Tue 28-Jan-20 10:52:20

Just looked up 'woke' on Wikipedia and I'm still none the wiser. Whatever it used to mean I suspect that meaning is changing so we'll never be really sure. I associate it with people trying to be more virtuous than everyone else, and looking for opportunities to criticise the behaviour of others.

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:52:13

And i agree with Musicgirl, and Nancat, and Moggycuddlersmile

SaraC Tue 28-Jan-20 10:49:13

Well I guess language is constantly evolving... I discovered a new phrase at dinner tonight when my six year old Grandson announced that what I had cooked for the family was ‘forty six’ which I thought an odd turn of phrase, and said as much. His Father nearly inhaled his mouthful and said it wasn’t ‘forty six’ but ‘pretty sick’ which is apparently the latest expression for ‘really good’. We’ve agreed that ‘forty six’ sounds better and so will be using that as a mutually agreed inter-generational term of appreciation instead. ☺️

ReadyMeals Tue 28-Jan-20 10:48:56

I refuse to use the word on the grounds it's not even grammatical. It should be "are you awake?" or "I woke someone" I don't see why all trendy concepts need to be accompanied by travesties of grammar or spelling!

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:47:20

And just because we dont choose to be vegan DOES NOT mean we are mean to animals,or would let them suffer,im a keen supporter of RSPCA but it doesnt mean i have to not eat meat just because vegans/ vegetarians say i shouldnt.what happened to free choice? Worlds gone mad..its like when folk stop smoking& then spend life lecturing others hmm(And no ive NEVER smoked so can comment on that Guilt free!grin

SirChenjin Tue 28-Jan-20 10:47:00

It kind of depends what words you’re using there Nankat as to whether it means you’re not woke or just plain racist/sexist/bigoted!

Moggycuddler Tue 28-Jan-20 10:46:41

It's a bit like that (labelling) with some gluten free foods. My hubby has coeliac disease and fir many years I've had to check the ingredients on everything for gluten. But a lot of things that are just naturally and always gluten free are now labelled "gluten free" and the price is higher. Some pasta sauce manufacturers do this. The standard sauce is gluten free anyway, but they do a separate gluten free labelled version which is exactly the same, exactly the same ingredients, but dearer because it states "gluten free" on the label. Btw I hate the term "woke" too. Absurd. And sounds stupid.

Nancat Tue 28-Jan-20 10:41:41

I'm just fed up of all the "old" words that are stolen and given a new meaning. When I use them in their original meaning, I'm gasped at. Does that mean that I'm just not woke?

Musicgirl Tue 28-Jan-20 10:40:10

I'm gluten free and you can get more products than ever before but in restaurants there are often many, many dishes for vegans and still very few gluten free choices. What l dislike is that so many of the "woke"/vegan brigade like to preach tolerance but are completely intolerant to the vast majority who might have more traditional and/or conservative views. Most of us have always tried to be fair to others without needing to make a production of it.

Great that you've found a vegan mould remover! But I HATE that word 'woke' when used as an adjective. I first saw it in a posh newspaper and now it has migrated to my own favoured paper, first used by journalists and now also by readers. Who decides on these words or phrases that we're all supposed to cling to like limpets? Oh my days!!!!!!

lizzypopbottle Tue 28-Jan-20 10:34:15

Yes, Barmeyoldbat I read that 'woke' was a term coined by black Americans in the 1960s so could today's mainly white, middle class, millennial, woke generation be accused of cultural appropriation? ???

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:34:12

Yes GrannySomerset,i was thinking that too! If we all start eating plants& veg, then there wouldnt be enough of them either- also, its not going to help the cows, pigs, sheep, etc that are already here if we just stop eating meat, and they need plan food too.

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:30:22

Im also ticked off with some oldies latching on to a 'trendy' word and trying to thrash us all with it early on a morning to prove they are all 'down with the kids' and we arent!hmm

GrannySomerset Tue 28-Jan-20 10:20:25

How will the planet be saved if the same population has to be plant fed? Surely the real problem is that there are just too many people?

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:19:40

Lxrl, Requiring a dairy free diet for medical reasons though,is NOT the same as choosing to eat a vegan diet for a lifestyle choice,so,therefore NOT redundant for my pointhmm

Barmeyoldbat Tue 28-Jan-20 10:12:21

I didn't know what woke was, kept reading it and couldn't make head or tale of its meaning. Now know the meaning and its an American African word. So could they please keep in in the US

Nannan2 Tue 28-Jan-20 10:11:53

And yes i do realise GF is also dietary requirement, but its not the ONLY one,is it? I ask in supermarkets about the free from range, and its first thing out of their mouth, "oh,our gluten free range is over here" they say all smug cause theyre catering for alternative diets- same with all the soya stuff- well ive got GC who cant have dairy,OR soya, soya is like poison to them- but loads of 'alternative' free from foods have soya lecithin in them! Come on shops! Stock for ALL alternative diets, not just one or two! hmmangry

Doodledog Tue 28-Jan-20 10:07:56

Sorry, Yearoff!

Doodledog Tue 28-Jan-20 10:06:23

I was just going to say that, Yesroff.

It isn’t just about food, but not using anything that derives from animals. My young niece and her family are vegan, and it is not an easy lifestyle choice, but it is born of kindness and high principles. It’s a pity that there is so much sneering, as it harms nobody, and it’s good for the planet if at least some of us do it.

‘Woke’ generally is often the same - anti-racism, sexism and discrimination of all sorts. Nothing wrong with that, if it’s not used to make the non-woke (snoozing? grin ) feel foolish, which it can be. That’s often down to immaturity, though. Where it’s not, it’s bad manners, and that should be addressed rather than the wokeness itself, I think.

polnan Tue 28-Jan-20 10:04:15

tell me, what is the point of being "aware" or "alert" to injustice and we do NOTHING about it?

Lxrl Tue 28-Jan-20 10:04:03

@Nannan2 if something is vegan it is automatically dairy free, there is your answer. Saying both dairy free and vegan is redundant.
