How do you feel about getting older? Whether it's a pet peeve or, equally, something you like, let us know (in no more than two sentences) and you could appear in a brand new novel.

Pan Macmillan publishers want to get a snapshot of real women’s feelings about ageing. A selection of these will be included in the new book The Time of our Lives by Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller Maeve Haran.

You might remember Maeve as the author of 90’s smash hit Having It All, a novel that sparked huge debate about whether women could work and have a family, and much more besides. As well as being a brilliant read, her new book is about four friends in their early sixties, and the new issues they face, twenty years older than the protagonists of Having it All.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a draw to win one of 20 exclusive early reading copies of The Time of Their Lives, and everyone whose comments are used will be entered into a draw to win a luxury forest cabin break for four people – details HERE.

We also have an exclusive extract from the book which you can read here.

Getting older - well it's a great excuse to use to avoid doing the stuff you don't want to do and to only do the stuff you want to do- genius!

After having 2 brain haemorrhages and a massive stroke 8 years ago I embrace life and want as many birthdays that I can possibly have.
life is precious and old age a blessing.

I enjoy getting older, as there is nothing I can do about it, I just go with the flow. I just wish my inside 16 year old would grow up.

Now it takes me all day to do what I used to do all day.
My husband has a version of this phrase involving the night!

I much prefer getting older to the alternative.

I do wish that other people didn't talk to me as if I had just landed from the planet Dweeb.
eg 'DO YOU USE EMAIL?' in a slow loud voice

My brain can't understand and thinks i can still do anything and i mean anything! Have you seen those snowboarders at the winter olympics?

I do try and look at getting older in a positive rather than negative way. I do admit though that I felt "different" in some way when I turned 60 in 2012. I could not put my finger on it but felt that people treated me differently somehow as if I had literally aged overnight! Not impressed!

I feel more content now and love to be surrounded by family and friends and looking forward to whatever the future holds for me. I am carer for my husband who has several health issues but we get through hard times together and stay as positive and as strong as we can.

I try and stay healthy and watch my weight, which does tend to fluctuate, but on the whole, life is very good and long may it last.

I hate being invisible to the 'fashion police'! My mother used to say to me when I was younger "I don't want to dress like you but I don't want to dress like your grandma!" and now I know what she means!

It's always nice to look back to the teens or twenties, but in reality when watching programmes on television of the sixties or seventies, like life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, or even Heartbeat, I am so glad that I don't have to go through that time again. I am very thankful for the knowledge, experience and modern technology which is available to me now enriching my life.

There are things I like about getting older, mainly free time and being able to have the confidence to choose what to do. I don't like my body feeling older - lack of energy, achey joints etc. My body is aging faster than my mind which I find disturbing!

Aware that time is running out to do the things I want to do, but realise that I can prioritise my time with my kids with a new kind of wisdom.

I'm 68 and loving it, my husband and I dance 3/4 times a week and we go to the gym 3/4 times. We even do spinning! The only down side is that when we get bugs and colds they take twice as long to get over, however every once in a while it gives us chance to stay home and chill!

libra10 Sat 22-Feb-14 11:33:57

Fabulous fun, free time, do what we want, enjoying life.
Downside - wondering what's to come!

Live your life right now - today. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow - and this is for every day, not just us oldies.

I don't want to get old cause my spirit is still so young

tabbaz Sat 22-Feb-14 12:40:47

When you see your reflection and for the first time you see an old person looking back at you it can be somewhat of a shock. That moment is when you make a decision, to grow old gracefully or fight; both have their advantages smile

dougell Sat 22-Feb-14 12:41:00

Did I really say that!!!

The joy of getting old is being able to pretend that you can't remember what you said or did!

isleofwhim Sat 22-Feb-14 12:57:00

I don't feel any different inside. I just wish the outer packaging felt the same way!

Sararose Sat 22-Feb-14 14:45:42

I am much happier now that I am older. I can do what I like, eat and drink what I like, go where I like with whomever I like and actually afford to do it!

soozydal Sat 22-Feb-14 15:01:38

Last night on Graham Norton Miriam Margolyes claimed to be very old at 72, this morning on Radio 4 Yottam Ottolenghi said he was ancient at 45. I caught the bus with my 100 year old neighbour who is always telling me I'm far too young to have a bus pass, ageing is THE most subjective process!

nivvydoh Sat 22-Feb-14 16:11:08

Getting older makes it easier to forget how great it was to be young! That's natures way of making the aging process more bearable.

MARYMCD Sat 22-Feb-14 16:20:32

Age is just a number not a state of mind

bunyip2104 Sat 22-Feb-14 16:28:06

I'm certainly getting more aches and pains now, but one things for sure I wouldn't be a teenager again for all the tea in china!

Nickyh1 Sat 22-Feb-14 16:30:23

Love getting older - become more wiser and more experienced and just appreciate everyday in it's own special way smile
