How do you feel about getting older? Whether it's a pet peeve or, equally, something you like, let us know (in no more than two sentences) and you could appear in a brand new novel.

Pan Macmillan publishers want to get a snapshot of real women’s feelings about ageing. A selection of these will be included in the new book The Time of our Lives by Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller Maeve Haran.

You might remember Maeve as the author of 90’s smash hit Having It All, a novel that sparked huge debate about whether women could work and have a family, and much more besides. As well as being a brilliant read, her new book is about four friends in their early sixties, and the new issues they face, twenty years older than the protagonists of Having it All.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a draw to win one of 20 exclusive early reading copies of The Time of Their Lives, and everyone whose comments are used will be entered into a draw to win a luxury forest cabin break for four people – details HERE.

We also have an exclusive extract from the book which you can read here.

I about about to enter my sixth decade, and to be honest I have never been happier. Feel great and love feeling comfortable in my own skin. Wouldn't want to be thirty again!

I don't really feel old inside and I am trying not to limit my own thinking about what is possible - I could have another 25 years left so I don't want to waste it!!

ChocolateCake1 Sat 15-Feb-14 13:28:37

Every year when it's my birthday I'm grateful to have become another year older, as some people don;t get that oportunity.

Getting older? well its just a number to me, I only wish that I had the wisdom that I have now when I was younger but I know that that is not possible for without the experiences I would not be the person that I am today.

I am happier, healthier and fitter than when I was working and constantly stressed out. As my DC live at a distance, I have made sure they know where all the important files and documents are in case I suddenly pop off - the possibility does have to be face but needn't rule your life.

What is getting older? It's not my mind that's for sure! Maybe my body has slowed but that is just natures way telling me to take time and enjoy what is around me!

I feel I become more & more invisible as I get oldet. I feel that younger people assume that I am irrelevant to them.

I feel fortunate to have been born when I was, to have had job security ( not many have today) and to have received my state pension and bus pass at 60. I am now able to travel on the bus for free, all over the country, visit my family, go on holiday and live to the full.

I like not feeling under all the pressure of trying to achieve in a career, trying to do the best as a mum, trying to run and a house and have a social life. To be able to rest and reflect, enjoy the small things and not stress about attaining the bigger things is liberating.

Marelli Sat 15-Feb-14 15:37:39

I'm very happy being the person I have become as I have aged. I really wouldn't change any part of me, because it really doesn't matter all that much!

newist Sat 15-Feb-14 15:45:28

Two good thing about being older are, I can float about in a kaftan and feathers all day and be eccentric. Another day I can take my computer back to factory settings, having the confidence to do both

Isn't it strange how many different names crop up when a prize is at stake! All these grandparents are missing out by not contributing to the day-to-day theads.
Gransnet has enriched my life, I urge you to give it a try, you never know, you might end up feeling the same. A warm welcome is always extended to any newer members. flowers

Now it's obvious that the days that I have left are less than the ones behind me I am becoming more scared of not being here at all and leaving my loved ones behind. My life seems to have gone by in a flash, there have been sensationally happy times and I would always describe myself as content but I can help occasionally focusing on missed opportunities and wishing that I could shake my younger self.

Two sentences!

With age comes contentment, experience and wisdom.

isis53 Sat 15-Feb-14 16:09:37

worried about keeping healthy dont want to be a burden

feefeegabor Sat 15-Feb-14 16:32:05

I like being older in that I don't worry about things I cannot change. I dislike the fact that I can no longer sleep through a whole night and the backache that won't let up!

Humph Sat 15-Feb-14 16:33:17

Age brings wisdom. More importantly, I can act as though I'm a teenager - no cares, responsibilities and no job to hold down - Hurray

cherylann2461 Sat 15-Feb-14 16:55:08

Its odd that inside I still feel young but the body is getting older and failing. I must admit it does scare me!

Soutra Sat 15-Feb-14 17:10:27

Little children can't wait for their next birthday - they have no fear of growing older and call it "growing up". Do they know something we have forgotten?

annodomini Sat 15-Feb-14 17:15:55

Getting older can be a pain but the alternative is a million times worse. smile

Hughmcl Sat 15-Feb-14 17:32:06

It a mind thing if i do not think about it I forget what age I am. I dounderstand that i need to keep active and fit to enjoy the rest of my life.

ykellock Sat 15-Feb-14 17:46:08

I love being the age I am and can't wait till I'm 50. The only drawback is the grey hair but hey that's what hair dye is for smile

jujones65 Sat 15-Feb-14 18:19:25

Inside I feel the same as I did when I was 19, however when I look in the mirror, which I try not to do, I see the eye bags and I sigh. Then one of my beautiful daughters tells how much they love me and, at that moment, I know my life has been worthwhile.

glassortwo Sat 15-Feb-14 18:33:44

I love being this age, I can say things now that I used to just think 20 years ago grin

apricot Sat 15-Feb-14 18:35:13

Spring is coming and I wake early, fizzing with excitement at another year and asking, please, for thirty more. Never mind the failing senses and aching joints, there's so much to remember and so much to look forward to.
