What's Grand about being a Grandparent
is the love they give to me
The feeling is totally priceless
yet I get it all for free

A smile that can light up a room
A cuddle to make everything right
A giggle that comes out of nowhere
as they lie sleeping in bed through the night

I've got a little power ranger who loves to jump about
and another who is Dennis the Menace of that there is no doubt
One who is a drama queen, who loves to dance and sing
and one who has a heart of gold and is good at everything

If I could bottle the feeling forever
and sell it by the gram
I'd be the richest woman in the world
Don't need to - I already am

The 'Grand' in grandparenting means to me the grand desire to Love, Nurture, Protect and Teach my grandchildren as I did my own children!

GRAND stands for: a best friend, a shoulder to cry on, a help for parents when they get stuck, a comedian and all other wonderful things. It also means being privileged to be able to steal someone very little person's heart and a hug.

Grand is how they see us for all things we've learnt from bringing up their mummy's !

psg1968 Mon 15-Sept-14 08:27:21

I think that having grandkids is wonderful I love to see them but love to give them back!!! that's the GRAND thing about it you have the best of both worlds!! (although lets face it our children are for life not just for Christmas they can still be a pain lol)

Just having to time to listen and understand but not panic. To understand that parent and child to not always get on and both opinions need respect, privacy and understanding

It is just grand to have the time to have fun, chat, teach, nurture and be friends with your children's children. I love it....

It's grand, such a privilege to be able to watch two little people growing up, treasuring all they do, even the naughty things, in a way I never had time to do when my own children were young, and to admire what grand parents my son and his wife are, managing to juggle stressful careers and all the other demands of modern living while always putting their children right at the centre of their lives.

It's GRAND that our baby granddaughter was born healthy and well - (her mum, our daughter, has a rare genetic disability and to add to the mix, suffered severe hyperemesis and pain while pregnant). I must add that they are courageous and GRAND parents to their happy and contented little girl !
We don't ever take GRANDparenting for granted - it's precious, and we savour every minute we have with her, as we do with both our lovely daughters.

well...my husband and I are completely irresponsible but our grandchildren tell us we are so much fun! Their friends cant believe the fun we have together....we are described as 'children trapped in adults bodies' !! Suffice to say that our grandchildren bring their friends round to spend quality time with us too !!

Generous with your time, love and smiles
Rally round in times of need
Always there, no matter what
Never leave without leaving a little bit of you with them
Draw on your life experience to pass on the best of your knowledge.

I haven't felt so alive since I was 17. It's grand!

For me, the GRAND in grandparenting comes from the overwhelming love I feel for my children's children and the knwledge that it's reciprocated.

sc00ter Tue 16-Sept-14 14:32:05

My dad used to put it really well - He used to say (when my own two would rather speak to my mum, their nan, about certain things rather than me....)
He used to say "well your the profit in your own home".
Meaning, as I am merely "mum" who obviously knows nothing, what ever I say is rubbish. Where as my mum, well, she was the source of ALL wisdom.

But now I am the nan, my step grandchildren, now ask my advice!

So, putting it simply - Being great is being the one your grandchildren can speak to about any awkward conversation, rather than mum or dad. smile

a great big heart full of love x

It's GRAND to be able to have the chance to get to know our GRANDchildren! We need to make the most of it and hopefully leave them with many wonderful memories of our love and the GRAND times they had with us, long after we're gone. My grandparents died 30+ years ago now, but their memories live on and I carry them with me every day of my life.

BeeBee1950 Tue 16-Sept-14 18:55:51

Being a grandparent is totally grand. I look into those little faces and see my own mum and dad and it bring such comforting continuity. It is also grand that we can laugh at the madcap things the kids do and the exaggerated facial expressions they make. In Irish, the grandparents are called Maithor Mor and Eachar Mor ( big mummy and big Daddy!) this isn't because of size, it's because of the importance given in traditional societies o the role if the grandparents. I think this importance is being recognised once again for the Big mommies and daddies!!

emlotte Tue 16-Sept-14 20:50:28

A "thousand" little things

Anya Tue 16-Sept-14 21:13:51

I don't feel like a GRAND just a GRAN.

mpsandy Wed 17-Sept-14 08:36:22

Devotion, love, care and attention, with a grandparent's presence there's no apprehension.

Being one of e very few people I would trust with my children. Being there no matter what and having the patience to deal with naughty tantrums at the end of he day
