For me it's my wonderful little Granddaughter, Kate, who puts the "grand" in life for me. She had a shaky start, spending time in intensive care after a breathing problem developed on day two of her life, but is now healthy and robust.

I am a long distance Grandma and have used lots of tips I have found on this website to help me maintain a good relationship with her. We like the postcard idea the best and I send her silly postcards at least once a week.

The love I feel for her makes me so happy. I was on the ceiling the day she arrived and in truth, I haven't really come down yet.

It is GRAND:-
To have the time and inclination to enjoy grandchildren. To love them without reservation. Have lots of fun with them. To be there whenever, and most important whatever, and for them to share the bond of love knowing it will never be questioned.

Being a grandparent is almost like having the opportunity to become a child again yourself and all the fun that comes with it, the joy of stomping through muddy puddles in the rain, reading 'The Hungry Caterpiller' at bedtime. filling the bath with thousands of bubbles, making cakes, playing in the park, the 'grandest' feelings in the world in fact.

How GRAND it is to have those little people in our lives.
Every smile and "I love you", has to be the most GRAND gift of all. How it's also GRAND for them to know that we are:-

*Grateful to have them.
*Richer for having them
*Adoring always
*Never bored by them
*Doting forever

Having the chance to have your child back, but without the responsibility to be sensible.

The joy of seeing your grandchildren and knowing that however little it is, you will have an influence on future generations.
You have achieved immortality, your genes will live on in them and their descendants.

Martin321 Thu 04-Sept-14 18:54:54

Simply because love is grand.

gerry86 Thu 04-Sept-14 18:54:17

Just being there

Its 'grand' to be in the 'Upper' Class and share in the exploits of the young

fatfairy Thu 04-Sept-14 18:51:38

I think the "Grand" is actually derived from the French - "Grande" - and it means (in effect) "big parent". Older, wiser and way more experienced than the child's parents, the Grandparent can advise (and maybe nudge) and mentor two generations of offspring. That's the serious part. The fun part is seeing how those two generations grow and develop alongside each other - and discovering how you as a Grandparent are never too young to learn new tricks.

The grand in grand-parenting is how much we love having babies and young children in the family again and enjoying them much more than we enjoyed our children because we have all the pleasure and get to have a rest when we hand them back. Grand Parents have grand patience, grand love and a grand time with their grandchildren.

It is grand to be a grandparent because you have the time to do all the things you wanted to do with your children but couldn't. Grand because you are free to be a child with the grandchildren. Grand because they listen to you and love your company. Most of all, GRAND because you are lucky enough to be allowed to share their lives and love them.

What's grand for me is seeing my children make a better job of parenting than I did, and being lucky enough to be part of it.

Spidergran Thu 04-Sept-14 18:39:16

The GRAND in Grandparenting is just another word for being the most awe-inspiring,dignified,glorious,marvelous,magnificent,monumental,nobel,palatial,sumptuous,dynamite,smashing,super,admirable,first-rate,majestic,outstanding,superb,sublime,terrific,equisite,imaginative,
sensitive, caring, loving and wonderful influence in a child's life smile

The look on my grandson's face when he realises that I am spinning him a tall story, then he says grandad you're being silly"

wallers5 Thu 04-Sept-14 18:34:26

They look out for their grand children. Teach them things that working parents may not have time for. Treats & Cuddles but also discipline (especially when alone with them!). Grandparents are less stressed. A rewarding relationship on both sides, tiring yes but you get the feel good factor.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 04-Sept-14 18:31:32

A very experienced poster there. Obviously.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 04-Sept-14 18:30:40

The winner will be drawn at random?!

No point in putting much thought into it then.

rubysong Thu 04-Sept-14 18:30:38

It's GRAND to hold your first grandchild, less than an hour old, and fall in love instantly, knowing that love will endure for the rest of your life and a new link has been forged in your family's chain of life.

ajanela Thu 04-Sept-14 18:30:29

Grand - One Dictionary definition that reflects my feelings about being a grandparent is wonderful, enjoyable, and memorable. I love and value my grandson and he means fun, the future and youth plus keeping me young.
