Attention all gransnetters, we're giving away a fabulous set of DVDs worth £199.42 courtesy of the lovely people at Twentieth Century Fox. The bundle includes a huge variety of films and television series such as Modern Family, Bones, The Fault in our Stars, The Book of Life and many more - perfect entertainment for all the family during a miserable month of April showers.

To be in with a chance of winning we want you to tell us which movie you would screen (and why) if you had your very own cinema for just one night. The more funny and outrageous the better. May the Force be with you all smile

*Congratulations trisher, you are the lucky winner. We LOVED the hilarious account of what you would have everyone do whilst screening South Pacific!*

"Blazing Saddles" had me chuckling all sat round the camp fire, eating beans when the action started, one of the funniest films I've every seen, I was really sore afterwards, it was a gas, if you will excuse the pun.

Harold & Maude ~ funny, poignant & a great soundtrack smile

Countryfan Fri 10-Apr-15 07:29:51

Groundhog Day.

In 2006, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". I think the Americans have got it absolutely right: this is not only one of the best films ever made but it is also a wonderful, light-hearted study of life.

I'd invite my grandchildren over to watch it with me and I'm sure we'd have a few 'eek' moments at the drama; a few 'aaw' moments at the love and quite a few 'laugh out loud' moments at the comedy.

The children are just beginning to understand themes or messages in books so, afterwards, I'd ask each of them to tell me what messages they thought were being delivered in the film.

I might also throw in that perplexing mathematical question: 'How many days did Phil spend in the time loop?' to see how their maths is coming along!

Singing in the Rain - classic film suitable for all ages.

maci234 Fri 10-Apr-15 09:10:03

the great escape a true classic

sue01 Fri 10-Apr-15 09:11:04

For two reasons it has to be Far From the Madding Crowd....original version please.

First reason...it has always been my favourite film... then 25 years ago I moved to this tiny village, and was promptly invited to supper by a lovely lady who was actually in it !! We've been firm friends ever since.

Second reason... the divine Terence Stamp as Sgt Troy ... oh my oh my !!

mrshumphreyjr Fri 10-Apr-15 09:19:32

I would screen CHAPPIE and ET (and have plenty of tissues at the ready for the sad bits...)

dojomojo Fri 10-Apr-15 10:57:22

I would love to win "The Green Mile" - I love all of Tom Hanks movies. I find this one especially inspiring and it always leaves me in tears!

viduska Fri 10-Apr-15 11:10:45

Probably Pretty Woman because it is such a great film and I would love to watch it with my daughter smile

greenfinger5 Fri 10-Apr-15 12:05:20

I would film - Mickey blue eyes, That film made me cry with laughter especially the bit where there is a dead body on the floor & James Caan says to Hugh Grant, get me a bag to put it in & he comes back with a sandwich bag! LOL.

plastigffantastig Fri 10-Apr-15 12:19:24

It with Clara Bow - I've always wanted to see a silent film at the cinema, with the accompaniments and everything. This would probably be my best chance of it!

Wurzelernie Fri 10-Apr-15 15:55:23

'High Society.' It had everything, gorgeous ladies, handsome men, a superb brat of a child and the most fabulous music. Can't think how many times I've seen it and would be very happy to see it many times more. Why don't they make films like this now?

bumblebee Fri 10-Apr-15 15:58:18

I've found adventure/sci-fi/fantasy blockbusters to be the best movies for cinema - dazzling special effects, grand score/themes, extravagant sets - Star Wars / Avatar / Indiana Jones / Back To The Future / Terminator 2 / Jurassic Park / Pirates Of The Caribbean .... take your pick!

But out the most recent films, if I had the chance, I would screen 'The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies' .... absolutely incredible!!!

smile

prettypistol Fri 10-Apr-15 16:16:55

grease, as its timeless! aalways makes me smile x

floorflock Fri 10-Apr-15 16:25:09

Shallow Hal because I think that most of us can identify with this.... If we are really reincarnated I think that next time (and I can't be alone here) many people will want to come back as the lovely/thin/inner Rosemary.

SusieWilkinson Fri 10-Apr-15 16:35:33

I think it would have to be One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, I'd love to see that on the big screen!

dolang2012 Fri 10-Apr-15 16:44:31

The Ghost and Mrs Muir love this romantic comedy made before all these silly romcoms and just love monkey puzzle trees

AlexPM Fri 10-Apr-15 17:11:10

Some like it hot. The first film I ever owned

Stephllewellyn Fri 10-Apr-15 17:13:24

The graduate because its my favourite film of all times. Great acting good story and the best music

feetlebaum Fri 10-Apr-15 17:55:05

@plastigffantastig - Properly done, the silent film experience can be amazing. I remember going to a Buster Keaton season, when Ena Baga was the pianist, and good quality prints were shown at the right speed - it was magic! For reasons of sound quality, film projectors were made to run at 24 images per second, while silent films were made at 16 images per second. Projecting a silent film on a sound projector means that nothing moves at the right speed, everything is 'undercranked' and timing goes out of the window.

Dottyhols Fri 10-Apr-15 18:06:35

Frozen with all my ladies (big and small) so we could all sing our hearts out!

Lupin Fri 10-Apr-15 18:30:26

I'd choose Zulu. That was my first real date with a young man and it wasn't successful, but the experience of the film transcends the rather uncomfortable memory of my young ,gauche and naive self. I've always loved that film and can watch it again and again. Oh that thrilling Zulu and Welsh singing and oh that gorgeous young Michael Caine. I can watch that film over and over again. These days I prefer Stanley Baxter. A good chap in a crisis.

JillD42 Fri 10-Apr-15 18:32:28

I would screen Gone with the Wind I have seen it more times than I care to remember, I still love the characters, I love the clothes and I would never, ever have wanted to leave Rhett for that annoying whining wimp Ashley. Of course I would regularly need someone to come round with one of those trays with ice cream and chocolate, some cold drinks and the odd pause for a call of nature.

grandmax3 Fri 10-Apr-15 18:36:52

THE ODD COUPLE, the one with matthaau and lemmon, so funny, it has me in stitches

DylanCalderon Fri 10-Apr-15 19:28:21

The Exorcist because of how much of a classic it is and how authentic and brilliant it is
