We're giving away a limited edition scarf designed by Emma Greenhill, and a signed copy of Les Parisiennes in hardback.

What did it feel like to be a woman living in Paris from 1939 to 1949? These were years of fear, power, aggression, courage, deprivation and secrets until - finally - renewal and retribution. Even at the darkest moments of Occupation, glamour was ever present. French women wore lipstick. Why?

In enthralling detail Sebba explores the aftershock of the Second World War and the choices demanded. How did the women who survived to see the Liberation of Paris come to terms with their actions and those of others? Although politics lies at its heart, Les Parisiennes is the first in-depth account of the everyday lives of women and young girls in this most feminine of cities.

Read author Anne Sebba's article about Parisian fashion, and tell us which was your favourite decade for fashion for a chance to win a limited edition scarf designed by Emma Greenhill, and a signed copy of Les Parisiennes in hardback.

This competition closes on 29 August at midday. Les Parisiennes: How the women of Paris lived, loved and died in the 1940’s by Anne Sebba is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and is available to purchase on Amazon and all good booksellers.

1920's flapper fashion for me, the glamour, the lines, the changing hemlines, shorter hair and the glitz.

I loved the New Look after WW2 - so extravagant after all the scrimping and make do and mend - so 1950's for me!

almcg2001 Sun 28-Aug-16 10:44:58

I think it is now. There are so many lovely clothes but no one distinct trend. Anything goes.

kezza1979 Sun 28-Aug-16 11:20:40

essexgirl46 Sun 28-Aug-16 12:46:51

I love the late 70's early 80's as it was so elegant and glamourous...yes there were lots of later 80's atrocities like ra-ra skirts and trashy earrings but my mum made me lots of Calvin Klein style suits and silky draped dresses which I wore with Bally suede sandals that snaked seductively around my ankles...I had a coupe sauvage hairstyle and baggy silk shirts which I tucked into extremely tight Fiorucci jeans...I had just started work and it was lovely to be able to dress up and pretend I was Lauren Hutton!

Surely has to be the eighties you can never beat those shoulder pads LOL x

The seventies, massive flares, and you could wear sequins and not get laughed at, also the platform shoes made you taller! smile

mimicat1 Sun 28-Aug-16 17:23:56

The early 70's when I started buying my own clothes.

clangers72 Sun 28-Aug-16 17:35:35

Definitely the 70's, my teenage years, buying my own clothes, loved the styles, colours etc. remember saving my wages for a particular black coat with a fur (not real) collar, platform boots and a mini dress. Whatever did i look like.

bdavies Sun 28-Aug-16 18:02:08

Definitely the 60s. Remember the bloomer dresses - what were thinking. I wore some shocking stuff - I would walk past the neighbours, count to ten, then turn around to see who was watching me. I would take all the hems up on any dress I bought, then my mother would take them back down so I would cut the dress and hem it again.

I lovee the 1920s/30s fashions as seen in Poirot. Red lips, feminine tailoring, attention to detail and hats galore.

Adotty1 Sun 28-Aug-16 18:27:43

The fun of the fashion in the feisty seventies has got to be the best time for me. I used to make a lot of my clothes back then - with my mother's help, though not always her approval. One outfit, a long crocheted waistcoat over scarlet hot pants, was a particular favourite. I remember wearing it to a friend's wedding, teamed with high white boots. Ah, happy days!
