We're giving away a limited edition scarf designed by Emma Greenhill, and a signed copy of Les Parisiennes in hardback.

What did it feel like to be a woman living in Paris from 1939 to 1949? These were years of fear, power, aggression, courage, deprivation and secrets until - finally - renewal and retribution. Even at the darkest moments of Occupation, glamour was ever present. French women wore lipstick. Why?

In enthralling detail Sebba explores the aftershock of the Second World War and the choices demanded. How did the women who survived to see the Liberation of Paris come to terms with their actions and those of others? Although politics lies at its heart, Les Parisiennes is the first in-depth account of the everyday lives of women and young girls in this most feminine of cities.

Read author Anne Sebba's article about Parisian fashion, and tell us which was your favourite decade for fashion for a chance to win a limited edition scarf designed by Emma Greenhill, and a signed copy of Les Parisiennes in hardback.

This competition closes on 29 August at midday. Les Parisiennes: How the women of Paris lived, loved and died in the 1940’s by Anne Sebba is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and is available to purchase on Amazon and all good booksellers.

I loved the 60's, as I was in my early teens. No more socks and the excitement when tights first came in. Skirts got so much shorter.
I spent all my pocket money in C&A where all the latest trends seemed to appear quite quickly. My favourite was a maroon
mini dress with a keyhole at the neck, edged in white.

I love the American fashion of the fifties - full skirts and pony tails!

dirgni Thu 04-Aug-16 13:32:27

Its got to be the sixties! After the austerity of the war and post war times anything "goes"! Mini skirts, flower power, afghan coats etc etc and lots of eye makeup. Great!!!

I really love the 70's fashion, because it was fun, flowery and eccentric. I'm not such a fan of the materials they used as many were man made , but I loved the fact that there could be a lot of colour worn.

I was born in 1949, in then Rhodesia, and my dearest aunt was a dressmaker. I was raised to respect fabric and cut, and the importance of accessories, carefully choosing even the right buttons. I learned to sew by the age of ten, and by the time I was 15, in the 60's, I was making my own and my best friends clothes copying pictures in Vogue, and wishing I could visit Carnaby street! On my last visit to Paris, in 2010, I drooled over the amazing fabrics in the boutiques in Montmartre. For me, each decade has something to be excited about, but I believe it all comes down to the fabric and the cut, and while the hemlines may go up or come down, quality and style wins hands down, whatever the era.
That said....how I wish I had taken more photos of my sewing in the 60's and 70's. Nothing was too difficult to try! All I needed was a sewing machine, scissors, and Vogue!

I am 5 ft tall and was always told my legs were my best feature so I have to say the 60s when the miniskirt was tres a la mode.

moleswife Thu 04-Aug-16 14:31:37

Whichever decade you are most conscious of fashion and try and follow it is the best! That was the 60s for me when I was the first of my friends wearing a shift with kitten heels or a long skirt (a la Viva Maria!) handmade and finished just in time for a Kinks concert!! Today there is so much opportunity and freedom to follow your own style - rather like my granddaughters - whether bought from designer, high street or charity shops. Good luck to them!!

I like the fashion now.

princesspamma Thu 04-Aug-16 15:04:33

I think i would say the maxi and midi skirts of the '70's are my favourites, and i am happy that they are back on trend again!

I loved hot pants mini skirts platform shoes I wore very high platform sandals when I got married they saved me the cost of shortening my dress they were very pretty white all stitching was in pale blue and pink stitching they didn't make a noise but my oh says he could feel me walking down the aisle must have made aisle tremble like dinasours on films I wasn't heavy then either . I must admit I think the 40sand 50s clothes were more stylish my mum always wore high heels even when pushing prams and suits with nipped in waist jackets

Had curly long perm hooped earrings and lots of colours remember blue wet look coat must of looked amazing ha ha x as I've grown (also in size) still think it's important to look nice no matter what era !

FranT Thu 04-Aug-16 16:03:00

Definitely the 60's, I loved fashion such as Mary Quant, the hairstyles, the black eye make-up, the music, and best of all I was young!

dragonfly63 Thu 04-Aug-16 16:41:29

I would have loved to live and dress in fifties fashions but I was born too late. I really enjoyed the seventies though. The S of floaty fabrics, long dresses and flowers everywhere.

Ruskin Thu 04-Aug-16 16:52:22

Fashion has never been my "thing" but I loved the '80s when I discovered Heavy Metal & denim & leather, lol \m/
This book sounds like a fascinating read :-)

Tryfan12 Thu 04-Aug-16 16:55:56

The 70's. Loved the kaftans, maxi skirts and wonderful colours.

jmo Thu 04-Aug-16 17:55:56

It goes without saying the 1960s were the most innovative. Goodbye to stockings and suspender belts - hello tights. Without them the mini skirt would have been hidious. Young people at last had their own fashion instead of looking like their mums.

mrsrwalsh Thu 04-Aug-16 20:19:16

It has to be now, now, now as you can only really LIVE in the
decade you are in!!!

Hameringham Thu 04-Aug-16 20:53:05

I just loved the sixties,We where based in Cyprus and spent hours making a heavenly ray of shift dresses in order to be both fashionable and comfortable in the glorious heat of the day.

kyalami Thu 04-Aug-16 22:22:14

I'd have loved to have been around in the roaring twenties. Flapper style very chic! ?

Gilla01 Thu 04-Aug-16 22:32:07

I liked the 70's.

It was my era, and I enjoyed the fashions. Loved my flares!

OK the platforms were a bit naff, but we were happy with them at the time.

Auntieflo Thu 04-Aug-16 23:03:10

There are bits of the 50's and 60's that I fondly remember. The pink and grey suit Mum had made for me in the 50's and the excitement of the fitting. My blue and white fitted and flared waisted dress later, and into the 60's . My first pair of cuban heels, the beautiful dark red and black lace dress I wore dancing. The pale yellow shirt dress that made me feel so good, and the white close fitted dress. Oh, I loved them all, and I had the figure to go with them then. Then there was my wedding dress....Those were the days.

seemercloud Thu 04-Aug-16 23:03:26

The 20's when the glamorous flapper dresses and lovely hairstyles seemed to reflect the happiness of the end of wartime

dahlia08 Thu 04-Aug-16 23:42:35

It has yo be the70's. The style were different.. Everyone has their own style in one way and then they had something which is is together or similar too. They were pretty and feminine. X

The 1960's - fashion for the younger people was new and exciting, and I loved the psychedelic patterns and blocking.
