Grandma taught me to read before I started school using some Noddy books she bought at a jumble sale. Once I could read by myself I graduated to any Famous Five or Secret Seven book I could get hold of in the library often reading them several times over. Money was too tight to own books. How times have changed. I now have a dedicated library in my home.

I used to be an avid reader of Enid Blyton. Loved the Famous Five Advenures in particular! Enjoyed ‘joining in’ with their adventures.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
by L. Frank Baum. I loved the film and was surprised that the book was very different but even better, it is a book that I read several times in my childhood.

I loved the historical novels by Margaret Irwin. Unfortunately they are now out of print, I would love to reread them - they introduced me to different eras and gave me a lifelong love of history.

I loved reading the Secret Seven by Enid Blyton, I'm sure there are some copies stored away in the loft. Think I might just send hubby to bring them down.

The Magic Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton. I read this book over and over, I used to use one of my mums kitchens chairs and pretend it was magical too and transport me to a mystical world.

I used to read anything and everything as a child, and still do! I know I loved Pollyanna and Black Beauty but also have fond memories of Little Women.

I absolutely totally loved the Famous Five books. My favourite was Five on Kirrin Island? think that was the name, because it was a bit scary. I still remember the bit where one of them (George I think, although realistically it should be Anne) was looking through a bush where she was hiding from a villain and it was night time..dark...scary stuff for a child!

I loved reading Enid Blyton, didn't have a favourite book but most enjoyed the Secret Seven series.

jacpri Tue 04-Sept-18 14:26:19

Little Women. I think I envied the relationship of the sisters as I was an only child. I just loved reading about their lives.

Moonfleet was read to the class, about smuggling and pirates. We were then taken to Carisbrooke Castle in the Isle of Wight where the hero of the book was supposed to have been sent down the well to retrieve a diamond. I then read the book myself at home; and I have watched televised versions that are not as good as the book!

Anne of Green Gables, just loved the character.

The book was The quest of the sea eagle by Sheila Brathwaite which I read when I was a young teenager, some 40 years ago and it is still as vivid in my mind as when I first read it. (I also managed to find a copy a few years back and is now a treasured possession) It's about an orphan boy who gets the opportunity to sail with a family of marine biologists and become immersed in their lives for a short while before having to go back to the orphanage. Of course it has a happy ending smile
