On a hot summer day walking along the beach, paddling in rock pools and picking winkles with school friends then taking them home for my Nanna to cook for us

My first sports day and my granddad pairing up with me for the three-legged race during the hottest summer on record. I was laughing all the way round because, although I was running, I don't think my feet touched the ground all the way round as my granddad had picked me up off the floor.

When I was young I closed the Wolferton railway gates and pushed the button to operate the signal to one of the last trains to leave Wolferton to King’s Lynn.

Going to visit my great aunt with my parents and grandmother, who was her sister. She lived in a quaint cottage that had a toilet and basin in a lean-to attached to the house. There was no fridge though in the kitchen and she kept her milk bottle in a pipe sunk into the garden covered with a square of wood. It was my favourite job to fetch the milk from the garden for tea, pour it in the milk jug and cover with a small round net, weighted with beads to keep the flies out.

Blackberrying in the fields behind our house with my Dad. We used to come back with more than enough for pies, jams and the freezer by the time the summer had finished!

The first Christmas after the war, the whole family went to my Great Aunty Dolly's house in London and my half-cousin William bought me the most gorgeous pair of slippers - little red leather boots with a zip up the front and fur round the top. I had never seen anything so beautiful before - and they were mine!!

spending a week with my older sister at my grans , we went to a different beach each day and had a great time playing on the sand & learning to swim. Always took a picnic and never spent money- proves you can have a great time without cost.

My nana lived with us - she was deaf and dumb and in the early part of last century there were little support networks, so to leave her alone after my granddad died was unthinkable - no care homes then! Family stepped in. So my earliest memory was learning the deaf and dumb language along with my speech so I could talk to her. Our house wasn't big so my sister and I shared so nana could have her own rom. She died when I was 11 and had a profound impact on my early years.

Helping my Dad get the honey from the beehives and eating the comb and honey before he put it into the extractor. The taste was so different to anything you can get today. And I never got stung!

Staying with my Granny, who took me to the pictures, where in the interval we had cut up pieces of apple. She gave me sparkling lime to drink. We listened to 'Sing something Simple' on the radio while she used metal curlers and rags to curl my hair. Before I went to sleep we always knelt to say a prayer.

My favourite memories are of summer holidays where all the family went together. By all the family I mean my mother, her three sisters and her brother and all of their families. We all had houses near each other and played on the beach all day long. I believe when we all left for a meal the beach would empty or seem like it anyway.

On returning home from Sunday School, we would find Dad mowing the lawn (the smell of freshly mown grass still reminds me of home). We would change out of our Sunday Best and have a good hour or two of outdoor play in the garden before Mum called us in for a beautiful home cooked Sunday lunch.

Rushing to the train station to meet the train I knew my dad would be on . I used to love "walking home" with my dad.

Walking along the sea wall with my grandparents before going to get an ice-cream. They visited every summer and we did this most mornings while they were there.

Just playing and being happy, whether it was running around outside, or indoors on my own with my imagination roaming free.

saoirse1961 Sat 29-Sept-18 16:37:08

Hanging around my Dad’s neck from the back of the car while we drove to our holidays. Couldn’t do that now!!!

I remember travelling with my parents to visit my aunt who lived in south east London, when I was little the journey seemed long and so exciting. We often stayed for the weekend and I was allowed to have a bath in the bathroom (our flat didn't have indoor plumbing at the time) a whole bath full of hot water was such a treat.

Feeling grown-up when my older sister took me to the beach for lunch. Chip shop chips and a jam doughnut, to keep us warm and full on a chilly, windy day! Both things we rarely had! Such a treat!
