It's that time of year again (hurrah) and time for our best reads for Christmas page...great gift ideas to cater for every taste. Recommendations include fiction, non-fiction, cookery, quizzes and more.

And one very lucky person can win the lot...worth almost £600.

Simply tell us on this thread which gift you are most looking forward to giving this Christmas. It can be big, small, homemade, expensive or free. After all, it's the thought that counts.

Usual Gransnet terms and conditions apply. A winner will be drawn at random at midday on Wednesday 12 December.

I'm looking forward to giving my better half a Bonne Maman Advent Calendar (with 23 exclusive conserves & marmalades + a special Christmas Eve surprise) tomorrow so he can have tasty toast for breakfast everyday - he has been saying he's bored with cereal and prefers something warm in winter. I think he needs to start the day with something hot, especially as he is outdoors a lot and can be found scaling tall trees in the rain, freezing cold. I might even join him for breakfast as I'm curious as to what is in the calendar too - a sharing gift! Also, the gift of company and good food for a few friends that would otherwise be alone on Xmas - we usually end up with a few waifs and strays, mates whose relationships fell apart right before Xmas etc. Our 2 cats get spoilt. We've often had animal visitors when family have left their dog with us to enable them to go away for the holidays. The other gifts we love giving every year are for our garden wildlife: the birds and squirrels get extra treats and the fox family pretty much get a proper Xmas dinner each! We make a donation to Second Chance Animal Rescue, usually cash, but if we have any vouchers or goods they can use directly for the animals or as raffle prizes/items they can sell at fundraisers etc then we donate them too.

I will be buying a CD/Radio/and cassette player for my mother in law who is in a home she hasn’t got good sight , suffers from dementia is bedridden and always loved music and dancing to the old songs from just past the war years as she can’t see the TV anymore she can hear all her old childhood songs . I think she would make her heart smile ?

I'm looking forward to giving my 103 year old aunt a pair of Hotter shoes. She has great difficulty getting shoes on so these should do the trick!

I'm looking forward to my grandson getting the Tiddlywinks game I've got him. Had to do a lot of searching to find one. Lots of young sales assistants had never heard of it!
I know he'll have lots of fun playing it.

I am addicted to buying books. This year I am having a recycling Christmas and giving carefully chosen books from my collection to family and friends.

Well, after reading all the good and altruistic comments about giving presents, my comment is going to sound so selfish. The one present I'm most looking forward to opening this year is a present I bought for myself - a virtual reality Ps4 headset to go with my Playstation 4. Since I have a fear of flying and I'm not that mobile, I hope it will put me in situations and places I can never hope to visit from the comfort of my armchair.

Just time to spend with family and friends, I've had a nightmare year, now its time to say thank you to those who have been there for me. So now I can give back my time.

I am going to take my friend on a day trip to a seaside town she loves in the spring. For now, I have flattened a a cardboard box, painted the edges blue (for the sea) and green (for a golf course). Now I am busy cutting out pictures of the iconic buildings in the town (double sided) and slotting them into the cardboard in vaguely correct positions. Think I will cut out some sandpaper for the sandy bits. I am going to package it up as a CONSTRUCT A TOWN kit - no tools or glue required - please ask a responsible child to help! I am hoping her grandchildren will enjoy it with her when they visit at Christmas.

I always look forward to a phone call from a friend who often goes away for Christmas but never fails to ring and wish me a happy Christmas and birthday which is on Boxing Day.

I've put aside small amounts of money throughout the year and have been able to pay for my son and his family to fly over from Ireland to visit just after Christmas for a few days. I'm so looking forward to it.

I've bought a number of educational and fun books for my 3 year old grandson and I am really looking forward to sitting down with him and opening up a whole new world for him through book reading.

funstr Wed 28-Nov-18 09:08:09

every christmas I give small gifts I bought throughout the year ie toiletries, games, jigsaws, colouring books plus homemade gifts to neighbours, friends and family. chutney and jam, knitting, small christmas cakes. week before christmas have a baking frenzy where I make brownies, chocolate bark, rice crispy cakes for kids, mince pies, spiced apple muffins, christmas cup cakes, gingerbread and christmas biscuits. cheese biscuits, cheese and onion rolls, sausage rolls . these are then all gift boxed and shared among everyone. each receiving a selection including their favourite. only one year i didnt due to ill health and alenghty stay in hospital. (came home christmas eve). everyone said how much missed them. that my baking etc was part of christmas tradition which was looked forward to. the look of anticipation and joy on their faces when they open this years goodies box is worth the hard work.

My best gift this Christmas is having a Christmas with my husband for the first time in 12 years, instead of him having to go to work. XX

The present I'm most looking forward to giving is a foot spa and men's pampering kit to my dad, because he is always rushed off his feet and hardly ever gets a rest, he's been a single parent with 3 kids over the past 30 year and has worked full time as a taxi driver for the past 28,if anyone deserves a pamper session with face masks and foot scrub, he does.I'm sure he will love it
