It's that time of year again (hurrah) and time for our best reads for Christmas page...great gift ideas to cater for every taste. Recommendations include fiction, non-fiction, cookery, quizzes and more.

And one very lucky person can win the lot...worth almost £600.

Simply tell us on this thread which gift you are most looking forward to giving this Christmas. It can be big, small, homemade, expensive or free. After all, it's the thought that counts.

Usual Gransnet terms and conditions apply. A winner will be drawn at random at midday on Wednesday 12 December.

My dear friend, who I miss since moving back here from France. She is so inspirational and imaginative, but she cannot knit! I am crafting her a beautiful scarf in the softest wool and I know this gift will be truly appreciated.

I love taking gifts to my elderly neighbours, who would much rather not eat themselves than see garden birds go hungry.

Industrial quantities of various types of bird seed and suet balls fit the bill nicely - pun intended !

It really is the gift that goes on giving, right through til Spring.

The best gift to give to my family is be there for them anytime but Christmas is different. To cook the whole Christmas meal with the trimmings and watch them opening their presents..... unfortunately this year I won't be with them. I am going to see my mum who is poorly and she lives abroad. I will miss my family but they are doing their own thing. Will miss my grandsons. One good thing I will be in a warm country. Merry ?!

I run a WI book group so looking through this list has given me some great ideas.
When it comes to presents - the greatest gift is time.

Although everyone will get gifts ( ones to open or booked experiences) , I am most looking forward to giving gifts of time to relatives. Taking out, looking after, visiting for a chat in addition to usual visits to shop and do tasks.
Will still have time to read in bed though!

I always get the best present ever when I give a present. I get to see the delight on the recipients face.

I am looking forward to seeing my sister open her present of a limited edition Disney charm that can only be bought in America that she has really wanted. She thought she would be able to buy it on a trip this summer but it had to be cancelled due to surgery. I managed to get my friend to pick it up when she visited last month . It's cost more than we normally spend but it will be worth it to see her face when she opens it.

I am looking forward to this year as it's just me and my husband for the first year, my oldest son moved away earlier this year and the youngest is working although it will feel strange the boys not being there and I will miss them.

I am giving the gift of me to my 3 boys.
Their father died this year in May and I want to be a strong parent for them and to make Christmas as special as I can as it will be their first Christmas without him

A visit to an English vineyard for my other half. He loves French wine but I would like to get him interested in our own country's excellent produce.

Some lovely and thoughtful posts here!
I've promised DS to do my utmost to give his family a great pre-Christmas weekend at my house earlier in December. His older DC live a long way from DS and his younger DC so it will be lovely to have everyone together.
I guess I'd better get on with the preparations!

I'm going to say my grandson's Aston Villa wellies because I don't want to giveaway my secret presents for my eldest son and my wife ... they're both sneaky enough to troll Gransnet for my ideas!!

I look forward to giving my chickens a swing. I have only had hens for two months, and I adore them. They are sweet and funny, and watching them peck around our gardens is relaxing.

A beautiful silver brooch that I've bought for my sister that I think she will really love.

As we are going to family on Christmas Day...going to follow the people of Iceland (there's a name for the evening??)
reading 'Miss Marley' on Christmas Eve. Drinking mulled wine and eating gingerbread biscuits.....rather than spending the evening preparing the Christmas Dinner!!

Hoping I get a HUGE Book Token so I can buy all the books I want over the year!

I always try to give as many books as possible as Christmas presents as a great book lover I always try to encourage others to find the joy I find in the written word.

Sarahmob Thu 15-Nov-18 17:17:23

The gift I’m most looking forward to giving is the Christmas story that was my DD’s when she was growing up (its out of print now). I’m so looking forward to reading it with my DGS.
