Always loved climbing trees - they've all been cut down now!

We used to play hide and seek with torches in the farmyard at night which was scary and exciting!

I always enjoyed skipping with a long rope and hopscotch

When I was 7 I was utterly spellbound by the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. I embarked on a project to build an Airfix model of the Apollo 11 Saturn V rocket. It took me hours and hours - it was very detailed model. Then I decided I wanted it to actually take off....so I packed an old Airfix paint tin with a thing called 'Jetex' (a solid rocket fuel for models you could get at the time) and glued it into the base. On the big day I set the model up on a stand in the garden, and with huge ceremony lit the Jetex motor and ran back into the house. There was a vast amount of smoke, and when it cleared...nothing had happened. No big takeoff. I still smile when I remember returning to the rocket and finding the whole base of it had melted. Such enjoyment - the excitement, naivety, and hope of childhood.

Playing board games, stamp collecting and making sandcastles.

Meeting some of the local children over the park to play rounders was a regular occurrence and one we used to love and used to have such good fun, in the fresh air and getting some exercise. If only the children of today would do such things!

Building jumps in the garden and leaping over them on my hobby horse, pretending to be a show jumper.

Skipping in groups ie when others turned the rope

It would be British Bulldog. Banned in most schools (and a completely different game depending on which county you lived in!) but the thrill of it was always too much to resist. I honestly don't know how I didn't end up with a broken neck!

Knucklebones, which we could play indoors when it was wet! I even looked up its history and it almost encouraged me in my Latin studies!

Whip & top. Loved chalking the top with different colours and fascinated with these colours when spinning.

Life was much simpler then, as was everything around us. My favourite game was a very small wooden train set with a circular track, an engine, a coal wagon and a carriage. It was clockwork and did 10 full circuits before it gave up the ghost.

Some days it feels as if I have done 9 of those circuits myself.

Making potions out of anything and everything!

Monopoly, used to play with my mum, dad and sister most weeks and game could go on for hours so we used to often leave the board where it was for several days. It was nice spending time with family
