Monkey and Me by Emily Gravett “A brilliant book and an absolute favourite with my grandson. He loves the repetition and rhythm of the language. The text is simple, it's great for encouraging kids to recognise animals and spot clues in the pictures. ”

we're going on a bear hunt, and where the wild things are. simple but very compelling!

Mapleleaf Wed 13-May-20 14:13:01

I loved reading "Where the Wild Things Are" to my great nephew when he was small (and the children in my class, if that counts).

Our four grandchildren love the Fern Hollow books by John & Jane Patience. As we are currently unable to read to them cuddled up on the sofa, we have been retelling them via video. My husband has been reading the story whilst I am providing props and sound effects. The kids seem to love them and we are having a brilliant time, although there does seem to be a great deal of falling into water involved.

I love reading The Worst Witch as her exploits give my grandson the giggles. It was also my favourite book when I was a child.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been the staple of my grandchildren's early reading - such a glorious introduction to books and stories.

The story of Corduroy Bear. I used to read it to my daughter and now my grandson loves it too.

Any of my Shirley Hughes Alfie books are always asked for when the grandchildren visit. I think it's the wonderful illustrations which accompany each page that is so loved, the detail provides extra conversations with the children.

I love to read the hungry caterpillar to my youngest Grandson

I like reading Katy and the Big Snow by Virginia Lee Burton to Charlie. I had the book as a child so, when I saw it was still in print, I had to buy it for him. We especially like tracing Katy's route through the snow to rescue all the folk in Geopolis. I didn't realise reading it as a child that it has a positive female hero - just enjoyed the story!

The Lion , The Witch and The Wardrobe- timeless and magical.

We love The Scarecrow's Wedding. I took two of my grandsons to see it at a small theatre, which was a real adventure together! We have made the characters to go in the garden, and reread the story often.

I am a real bookworm & always have been! Reading has bought me much pleasure over the years & I love to share that joy with the next generation (& the one after that!) - one of my favourites to share with the little ones is 'The Jolly Postman' - it has it all.. detailed illustrations, references to the classic fairytales & those wonderful little letters, booklets & cards in envelopes - perfect!

I love reading Enid Blyton stories to the younger ones and Harry Potter to the older children - both for bringing some magic into their lives, and stories they are likely to remember all of the lives. I firmly believe that it is never too early to start reading to children and encouraging them to learn to read themselves. I used to sometimes read aloud when pregnant with my daughter and often wonder if that contributed towards her life-long love of books.

I enjoyed reading 'The Wind in the Willows' to my children and grandchildren, giving all the characters different voices - the Mole, a down-to-earth home-lover; Ratty, posh accent, enjoying life 'just messing about in boats'.

My 4 year old granddaughter loves the tale of Samuel Whiskers (also known as the Roly Poly pudding). Her grandpa sometimes wears a mustard coloured waistcoat.
I have also been known to push a wheelbarrow though I would never have "stolen" Miss Potter's.

Keffie12 Tue 12-May-20 22:39:51

The one I used to read to mine as children I now read to my Grandchildren. It's called "Naughty Daisy" which is about a cow called Daisy who was always running off and hiding when the farmer came to collect them

Adri66 Tue 12-May-20 22:25:46

I love to invent the stories for my little grandson, usually I start with mythological legends but after the beginning of my fantastic story it turns out to be his magic Adventure involving him as the protagonist Hero!

fevertree Tue 12-May-20 22:24:50

I'm reading Dr Suess to my grandson (The Star Bellied Sneetches).

(Someone upstream mentioned The Water Babies, that brought back a flood of memories, I used to love it too).

jerseygirl Tue 12-May-20 21:18:22

Its got to be The gruffalo or Stickman. My grandson loves it and knows the gruffalo story off by heart. He's 3 and i miss him so much.
