We read Cave Baby (Julia Donaldson and Emily Gravett) again and again and again. He’s just two and it’s his book of choice when I look after him two days a week (pre-Covid obvs).
I dream of reading the very short stories I have been writing as emails for my grandson, just 2, during lockdown whilst we can't mind him. I really wanted to keep him in touch with his toys and the house here so the stories are about Humph his soft toy elephant and Mr Hedgehog, a garden ornament. The stories are simple sentences interspersed with photos of the 'adventures'.
I can't remember the title but it's a book for infants where they have to find animals by looking under pics of leaves or behind doors etc. On the last page is a mirror and when we get to that my little granddaughter says "me!" and starts kissing the mirror! It's delightful!
My little granddaughter is three, and lives in Perth, Australia. One of her favourite books is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss, though she enjoys all of his books. I chat to her at bedtime, several times a week, and we have a story. I know many books off by heart, after reading them to my five children over the years. Sophia thinks it so funny that she holds the book and Grandma ‘reads’ the story to her without looking at it.
Just before lockdown, I had started reading "The Twelve and the Genii" by Pauline Clark to my 8 year old grandaughter. I clearly remember my junior school teacher reading this to the class at the end of each day when I was 7 (in 1964, shortly after it was published). It was the first book I had read to me that had proper chapters! It is about twelve little soldiers who previously belonged to the Bronte children who are re-discovered in an old farmhouse by a young boy. They come to life and go through many adventures. A beautiful book!
Tales from acorn wood ( Friends), is the book I'm reading to my granddaughter on face time, she is 2 , and we have made pop-up animals of the characters on little sticks , and we pop them in view of the screen at the right moment, she loves it .
As a Mum of 3 who used to do reading and literature in school - I can't stress how important it is to read ANYTHING with your kids. I love the classics and all the , old favourites by Enid Blyton, Julia Donaldson, Beatrix Potter, etc, etc ... my message is JUST READ - to and from any age. If you read a good book pass it on. I think there's nothing better than gifting a good book.... Can you tell I'm an avid reader?!*
My youngest grandson lives in the Antibodes and is mad about everything to do with Thomas the Tank Engine. I recently showed him over Skype the original Thomas books by Reverend W. Awdry, they were great favourites of his uncles and he now loves to have them read to him. Reading over Skype involves Granny crouching behind the laptop to read and Grandad holding the book up to the screen and turning the pages. His current favourite is 'Toby the Tram Engine' series no. 7, so I read that one whenever we Skype, about twice a week, and one other.
The Tiger that came to Tea is my favourite to read to my grandchildren as it brings back lovely memories of reading it with my children. And the children love it!
