Our garden is a wildlife sanctuary in contrast with the sterile farmed fields around us. We have only cut our lawn once this year (last week to tidy for winter) as it harbours grass snakes, slow worms, glow worms, and I use the grass clippings to make refuges for these creatures. Sadly we have no hedgehogs, I put this down to the intensive farming around us. Otherwise, we try to live consuming as little as possible.

I recycle as much as possible. I have just discovered that a local shop has a collection point for crisp packets so they can now be recycled too.

We live frugally. Being aware of the earth's resources that are
being consumed at such a rate, the less we use the better.

Lots of recycle at our house. Less meat home grown vegetables, less using washing machine, use water from kitchen to water garden, use cloth bags instead plastics bags, less travel to oversea instead go local. Staycation. Make your own compost

Rosiewhite1 Wed 23-Sept-20 21:47:16

I buy most of my clothing and many household items from charity shops, I also donate all unwanted items to same.

I use plastic bags as bin liners, I use plastic bread bags as smaller bin liners.

I only shower once each week, (using my bidet daily is the way forward!).

Everything possible is recycled one way or another!

I've grown my own tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce and butternut squash this year - not done this before. Will do again!

I have collected seeds from plants to sow for next year instead of buying new plants.

I have given away any excess vegetables and spare plants and have been very happy to receive some in return.

Recycle and upcycle!

Gransie Wed 23-Sept-20 13:43:23

My partner and I have bought electric bikes so short journeys and some longer ones are fun and save on car use plus we also get fresh air and exercise.

agree with everything on GeminiJen's list and others posts. be aware, follow the code, and recycle constantly. Stop monthly or weekly clothes shopping trips, fashion updates are now outdated!

We always recycle everything possible. including now all garden waste. We also take all glass jars and bottles to the local point when we do our monthly shop.

trishtone Wed 23-Sept-20 10:03:16

We purchased a HotBin for the garden which we put all garden and kitchen waste in, except bones and fat. It rots down really quickly and goes straight onto the flowerbeds as compost. Best item we have bought.

I've always have been big on recycling - but recently when shopping I am paying more attention not only to the ingrediences but also the packaging. I found a lot of new brands that use glass and bamboo rather than plastic. One of my best buys recently was "loaded sponge" instead of a plastic bottle of shower gel. I've used my sponge for 2 month now and it will be finished soon. I will get more and hope to give some out as Christmas pressies to show people this alternative.
Been Vegetarian for 24 years now and trying to replace some dairy products but find it quite hard going.

have been recycling as much as possible, using my scraps of material to make masks and tote bags all fully washable, not over ordering food but this has proved to be a challenge as the dates on the supermarket food isn't great, but have been trying not to waste any and composting anything I can, I dont have a car so have been walking and reluctantly using a bus only when necessary,

Annapops Wed 23-Sept-20 08:29:28

Planted my own wildflower garden. Made my own Christmas wreaths for the past four years from natural materials and always reuse the metal ring used as a base. Unwanted clothing is donated to charity shops. Any unwanted household item is advertised on a local gumtree site.

I reuse or recycle as much as possible
We grow some of our fruits and vegetables
Clothes are mended and passed down children before making their way to the charity shop
We only buy the food we need - no extras do no waste
Use the car for only long journeys
The central heating is rarely used - because of cost and environmental factors
Eat less meat
Solar panels on our roof and for garden lights
We don't buy plastic toys
Washable nappies used on the children
Inform my children of the benefits of the above and why we do this, to encourage them to naturally do the above. We encourage bees by planting bee-friendly flowers
Do as much as we can as a family to help reverse climate change, even litter picking.

I try not to use disposable coffee cups where possible (harder during Covid times). My trusty reusable cup must have prevented several hundred going into landfill!!

Shenstone Tue 22-Sept-20 21:29:07

I keep the remaining boiled water from the kettle in a flask when I make a cup of coffee

jo24773 Tue 22-Sept-20 21:24:19

we recycle where ever possible at home and my business we grow a lot of veg and salad and have planted several fruit trees in the last two years including a hazel nut tree this year xxx

hopezibah Tue 22-Sept-20 21:06:50

In a bizarre way, covid has made us far more aware of what we actually need and all the unnecessary excess journeys, products, etc we used to have and didn't really need. We use the freezer to cook bigger portions and freeze. Re-use just about anything and everything that can be re-used and have greatly reduced consumption of many things.

ShewhomustbeEbayed Tue 22-Sept-20 20:32:59

Lots of recycling, re-using and re-purposing, buying secondhand.
Lockdown has made us even more aware of “things” and how unimportant they are in the scheme of things so we are getting rid of loads of things and leading a simpler life. I’m loving working from home rather than a 2 hr drive each day too.

MrsNotgotalot Tue 22-Sept-20 19:02:31

I've changed from plastic drinking straws to a metal reusable one

crusosa Tue 22-Sept-20 17:26:18

I try to recycle as much as I can and dont waste any food or water. I changed all the bulbs in the house for low energy consumption and use curtains in winter to help keep the heat in the house. I use Free Cycle and Olio to share things and food with other community members, donate lots of things to charity and buy 80% of my cloths in charity shops as well. I take my trolley or tote bags when shopping to avoid getting new plastic ones and go to pick my delivery with my own containers. I make my own sparkling water and stopped buying plastic bottles and east more veggies and less meat and fish.

Overthehill5 Tue 22-Sept-20 16:30:48

I have switched to hair shampoo and conditioner bars and recycle as much as possible, and buy organic veg if I can

jessiecat Tue 22-Sept-20 16:29:05

I have just discovered the local facebook frecycle group and it is brilliant. I have had a huge clearout and everything that would probably have gone in the bin was offered on the page and somebody else took it. I love the idea

ktmd Tue 22-Sept-20 16:24:04

We recycle and donate and buy from charity shops.

Dollyfair Tue 22-Sept-20 16:13:07

Recycle, recycle recycle. Avoid one use plastics, always take a cloth bag out for shopping, use washing up water for the plants.
