I have reduced my use of plastic packaging.
I no longer buy cling film.
I use wax wrappers instead of cling film.
I cycle where ever I can.
I have reduced the chemical cleaners I used to use and use natural products like vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.
My husband has installed water butts around the house for watering the garden.
I rethink, reuse, recycle and reduce.
I do not throw food away and use it all in different dishes.
I also use washing up and used shower water in the garden.
I do not buy unnecessary things or food.
I repurpose clothes or alter them.
I buy from charity shops.

Recycle and upcycle, mend (clothes and other items) to make last longer. Careful use of energy of all forms, only when really needed. Walk where I can, no flights. Meat consumption rare, cook from scratch. And much more.

Shoom72 Sun 20-Sept-20 12:40:04

Recycling lots and only buying clothes from car boots and charity shops as well as finding multiple uses for items like jam jars and plastic containers. You will be surprised at things you can think of!!!

GrAnne2 Sun 20-Sept-20 12:38:07

Small steps, I guess: buying unwrapped fruit & veg; recycling and composting at home; only using lighting when required; minimising use of central heating; taking my own perpetual hessian shopping bags; eating less read meat ...

We have 9 solar panels that since their installation about 9 years ago have generated over 19 Megawatts of electricity. Not only do they reduce our demand on the electricity grid (and quite often contribute electricity to it but they also produce enough income from the payment we get for what we generate to more than cover the cost of both our electricity and gas usage from the grid.

sarahanew Sun 20-Sept-20 12:24:45

I reuse or recycle wherever I can and only throw things away as a last result. I use reusable bags for shopping and shop mainly at my local farm shop. I buy secondhand goods wherever possible. I compost my vegetable scraps. I use gas, electric and water frugally. I try and do several things out on a trip in the car rather than separate journeys for each task

GrannyMary1 Sun 20-Sept-20 12:15:12

I recycle everything I can even though it means more work. I try not to use plastic .

tinysidsmum Sun 20-Sept-20 11:59:09

I recycle as much as I can and only buy essentials

cuppatea Sun 20-Sept-20 11:52:50

I try to keep environmental issues in mind, not just the climate issues, with all activities eg reuse/recycle as much as possible, buy second hand items where appropriate, I don't fly, have solar panels, grow my own fruit and veg, use a metal reusable water bottle to fill with tap water when out.

When I went back to university as a mature student I took my master in environmental politics. I was horrified.
I have for many years been very aware and concerned about all aspects of the environment for a long time. Not just in the recent years since it been trendy.
I have completely changed my life in many ways to do my bit I could not possibly list it all but here’s some of what I do. It’s a work in progress and as we learn more I adapt more,
I no longer drive I walk, cycle get public transport everywhere
I gave up my past port and only travel within the UK.
I recycle and upcycle. If I see something dumbed on the street, I take it home upcycle it and sell it giving a donation to environmental charities which I belong to. Its now a hobby.
I craft and make my own cards and gifts made from recycled bits and bobs. And No these are not tat these are personalised useful items.
I never by new always 2nd hand all my furniture is either up cycled or from eBay all my clothes are from charity shops,
I have a water butt and conserve water where I can I am a low water user.
I switch off lights when not in a room nothing is on standby, I use energy saving lightbulbs and appliances.
I avoid plastic and will not buy friend veg In punnets
I have moved back to bars of soap and just started using bar shampoo
I lobby MPs and councliors
I have an eco-friendly garden
I use natural or eco cleaning products
I use fabric shopping bags
I cook from starch freeze and never waste food
I don’t have clocks on my cooker or microwave.
I try to buy eco clothes where I can
I am a vegetarian
I composted.
I dont and wont have a dish waher or a clothes dryer.
And loads more.
I am not an aging hippy my home is not tatty and I dress very presentably being ethical and environmental is not hard and just ia about adapting

I avidly compost or put into the green top bin all kitchen and garden waste. I also help with a community garden, not just to make a beautiful space out of waste ground, but to raise the spirits of local people - hardly any vandelism and people make such kind comments as they pass when they see you watering!

HHBBNN54 Sun 20-Sept-20 11:30:16

I recycle as much as possible, I have started sorting clothes out for recycling to take to a charity shop that I volunteer in. I have been known to take stuff out of the bin in my partners kitchen as his grandchildren tend to just chuck everything in the bin regardless of wether it can be recycled or not.

I think we can learn to become more aware and interrogate the actions and decisions we make on an everyday level and understand the cost to the environment; do I need a full hot shower this morning.... can I make a meal without meat this evening.... where do the ingredients of this spread come from.... will there be less environmental impact if I continue to use my old car less or should I buy a new electric one.... can I cycle instead of driving.... how can I collaborate with others in my neighbourhood to reduce our environmental imact.... I think that being mindful will provide the knowledge and tools for change.

My steps may only be small at the moment but you have to start somewhere, don't you? I have turned down my thermostat by a couple of degrees at home. It's a tiny change but, if everyone was to do it, it could make a huge difference. I have bought bamboo, re-usable straws for my grandchildren. I have started being more conscious of throwaway fashion so I buy less clothes, I either take clothes to charity shops or I take them for recycling, rather than throwing them away. I have also started making gifts as well. It started off as something to do during lockdown but I found that I get an enormous amount of self satisfaction by crafting, such as card making and decorating used jars and bottles. The family really like the personal touch as well so it's not only fun to do but really appreciated and cherished!

bernie777 Sun 20-Sept-20 11:08:59

I've finally got serious about recycling (no longer relying on the council but cutting waste down properly and reusing a surprising number of things), have stopped flying (currently given up on future plans) and have created an organic vegetable garden (so far it's doing a great job in feeding the butterflies, slugs and bugs) so this coming year my carbon footprint will hopefully be substantially reduced.

Jilln894 Sun 20-Sept-20 10:53:59

Recycling, shoes, clothes, books etc. Buying clothes secondhand, buying loose fruit and veg and using own bags. Recycling as much as possible. Fewer car journeys. Using local shops and filling containers in shops to reduce packaging.

luckybean Sun 20-Sept-20 10:48:57

I have been trying to be more self sufficient with growing fruit and veg. I have also tried to not waste any food.

marpau Sun 20-Sept-20 10:47:47

I recycle as much as possible and use selling sites rather than send things to landfill.

creativz Sun 20-Sept-20 10:42:08

I chose to live a more conscientious greener life in my teens, went veggie first but am now virtually vegan for over 30 years, I buy local fresh produce and grow some of my own too, do my best to steer clear of plastic packaging and I recycle everything that I can, rarely buy anything new, I don’t drive - mainly walk/cycle, I often pick up other people’s rubbish at the beach, I campaign for various green organisations both online and in the real world too... the list goes on ! shamrock

helgawills Sun 20-Sept-20 10:35:47

Have been avoiding plastic packaging for years, no meat for over 30 years, only buy clothes when absolutely necessary, dry clothes outside, use sweeping brush rather than vacuum cleaner, walk/ cycle when I can, only one return flight every decade of my life.

Wilsa Sun 20-Sept-20 10:14:31

I use the car less and walk more. Have a water butt and recycle almost everything. Had a water meter fitted and NEVER waste water.

Baldmar Sun 20-Sept-20 10:13:43

My way of helping the climate crisis is that I no longer go on holidays abroad, I walk everywhere and I recycle as much as I can. An I hope this can help the future generations.

Tillymint21 Sun 20-Sept-20 10:08:37

Stopped air travel
Moved onto a plant based diet
Walk rather than bus
Recycle all waste
Energy efficient lightbulbs
About to install insulation under the draughty floorboards
Wash clothes at 30 or 40
Buy second hand furniture if possible from auctions
Reduced purchases of new clothing and use charity shops to recycle
Invested in an internal set of bins that make recycling much easier for all in the household to use
Buy food locally with minimal packaging
Use cloth bags for shopping
Enjoy living a simpler life
Switched charity donations to climate aware ones
Started to really think about what more I can do to get others in my life switched on to making a difference.

teepee55 Sun 20-Sept-20 10:06:12

I think carefully about everything I do that might have a negative impact and how I can alter it.
• I try to avoid buying things in plastic containers if there’s an alternative
• I recycle, reuse, donate ..
• I am actively aware of efficiency of water and energy usage
• I think carefully about the need and usage of everything I buy
• I give money for gifts
• I take an interest in current eco articles and programming and take positive action where possible

Anj123 Sun 20-Sept-20 10:05:46

I mend everything I can, use reusable bags and coffee cups, plan food shopping so nothing is wasted. All leftovers are used in lunches or frozen to use at a later date. Basically a lot of it is common sense. The whole household is encouraged to do the same.
