Pandemic panic

Correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've heard the corona virus isn't a very pleasant illness but then it's not the worst illness either. Seems to be a fever, aching and a cough. Most people who get it will recover but like all illnesses a few won't.

So why the panic? I vaguely remember the Hong Kong flu....mainly because my mam got it and my Grandma came to look after her and us. Mam must have been really ill to ask my Grandma for help. I remember she was in bed for what felt like ages but was probably only a few days. I don't remember mass panic, schools closing etc. I wasn't very old at the time and my memory isn't as good as others. Was there a panic? Did the nation go into shutdown?

i think this is the link referred to by anno above.

Gosh janeainsworth that's criminally irresponsible. Or just plain thick. Of all places...

janeainsworth Thu 05-Mar-20 18:38:08

It’s just been reported on the local news that the man in Newcastle who has been diagnosed was at a soft play centre the other day. He’d recently come back from northern Italy.
How stupid/selfish can you get?

janeainsworth Thu 05-Mar-20 18:34:45

The link doesn’t work Anno, could you re-post it just as the link rather than substituting words, if that makes sense?

I am with you on this GracesGran, we have to do what we can to protect ourselves and our family. Why would you not.
Latest numbers 115 cases, 1 death.

annodomini Thu 05-Mar-20 18:07:03

Would those who still dismiss Coronavirus as akin to annual flu, please read this by experts sent to China by WHO. It really is quite sobering.

janeainsworth Thu 05-Mar-20 17:55:24

Gracesgran well said. I thought the snowflake comment was off too.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 05-Mar-20 17:23:16

Thank you welbeck. That does make some sense of it.

welbeck Thu 05-Mar-20 17:11:07

i am wondering if some of the ridiculing/ dismissing/ minimising/ head-in-sand-ism is a kind of reflex emotional defence mechanism, in the face of extraordinary circumstances. it can all feel overwhelming.
that would explain why some are not amenable to reason.

GracesGranMK3 Thu 05-Mar-20 17:00:20

Let's hope that the Black Death of 1348 and 1379 doesn't make a return visit - Gawd alone knows how the current crop of snowflakes would manage......

I definitely live in another world to some of you. What on earth is wrong in trying to prevent yourself dying if you don't need to or trying to prevent spreading an infection to others? If that's being a snowflake I would rather be that and take sensible precautions than joke about the Black Death.

?ohh Lemongrove

lemongrove Thu 05-Mar-20 16:39:25

Well Brid if history is anything to go by, nothing ever stopped the Germans from going in.grin

Bridgeit Thu 05-Mar-20 16:29:48

I am guessing that it probably makes folks feel better protected if they are wearing something?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 05-Mar-20 16:27:24

Bridgeit it all depends on the type of mask, we sell masks as part of our Health & Safety range, are finding it difficult to fulfill our regular customers orders, will not sell to any walk in customers.

Chestnut Thu 05-Mar-20 16:26:50

I posted a picture of the type that works 100% Bridgeit both in and out, but none available!

Bridgeit Thu 05-Mar-20 16:15:27

Threexnanny, I read that the masks stops the wearer’s germs from spreading out, but does Not stop germans from going in.

there is a useful discussion at the link above, with many links to official sources.

It seems that wearing a mask is a good idea if you must go out when suffering with any respiratory infection - wearing one as an attempt at protection is a waste of time, according to 'experts' yesterday. Also, thinking about the figures being quoted, the 'total affected' is an accumulative one and many of those people must by now have recovered and gone back to work, and this will continue alongside the further numbers for those who are falling ill. That is rather obvious, but does offset the potential alarm for the spikes of infection. People are getting better too - it's easy to lose sight of that.

I'm never that impressed by YouGiv polls. I used to do them but got sick of my responses being funnelled down into what they seemed to want to find. Also they didn't seem to bother much with the demographics of the people completing the polls. There are financial rewards if one does enough polls.

Chestnut Thu 05-Mar-20 14:13:18

I think it's more important for healthcare professionals to have effective masks so I would rather they had them. Without anyone to care for the sick we will be in dire straits.

Chestnut Thu 05-Mar-20 14:08:39

The only face marks which work 100% are the big wrap around ones (see picture). The other types have limited protection but I doubt there will be any masks available anywhere now.

Daisymae Thu 05-Mar-20 14:08:22

A large You Gov poll had revealed that the UK is the most unconcerned country regarding the virus. Even more laid back than the US. I am pretty sure that this is not a good thing now. I don't think that we as a country are concerned enough.

Cunco Thu 05-Mar-20 14:00:27

I see Thailand and South Korea are reported to have banned the export of face masks because of shortages at home. I would only wear one as a last resort but it seems there may not be one to wear.

Jane10 Thu 05-Mar-20 13:02:30

Jura2 confused

Oldwoman70 Thu 05-Mar-20 11:48:21

I think you will find the masks worn by medical staff are different to and more effective than those sold to the general public
