There were no strategies for protecting the vulnerable and there had been a failure to engage the public. “We have a superficial prime minister who has got no grasp of public health,” Ashton said. “Our lot are behaving like 19th-century colonialists playing a five-day game of cricket.

From John Ashton.

I am very happy with the way the government and BJ are acting, taking the advice from some of the very best scientific brains. Be a bit patient, there is much sense in what is being done.

Matt Hancock on Sophy Ridge saying the over 70s will be asked to self-isolate for up to 4 months.

He also says we are doing more testing than many other countries - which I must admit is not what I had understood.

I see lots of references to how well China has done locking down etc. So bearing this in mind that the virus originated from China all their steps did not stop the virus spreading across the globe. I am tired of the arm chair experts, the government bashing, if people expended their energy in following the guidelines, stop panic buying and looked pit for each other we will get through this

France, restaurants plus shops to close except for food, chemists and banks. Versailles is nearly empty.

mokryna Sat 14-Mar-20 18:37:14

I can see the reason to keep healthy children at school to keep parents who are needed in and around the NHS, however no thought is given to the teachers especially those who are not in prime health or age

Very sad regarding the new born and mother

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:59:23

Indeed.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 17:58:36

Sir Chenjin

Well we do actually agree on that smile

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:54:39

POGS - we will agree to disagree.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 17:53:34

Sir Chenjin

I will do it again.

From fullfact:-

' Many people have shared a video of Prime Minister Boris Johnson appearing on This Morning on Thursday 5 March, claiming it shows he advocates allowing the new coronavirus to spread through the population and that the country should “take it on the chin.”

This clipped video segment has been taken out of context. '

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:49:47

Yes I do POGS - and it doesn’t matter how many times you type “context” or “politicising”.

Callistemon - he didn’t say ‘not’

Ginny42 Sat 14-Mar-20 17:49:41

Some compassion from a Dr for those of us feeling a bit wobbly about these uncertain times. I'm not sure about the context of BJ's 'take it on the chin' remark, and I did not appreciate his prediction that many families would lose loved ones 'before their time'.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 17:48:13

Sir Chenjin

You do not understand the context and you keep proving that point.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 17:46:53

Callistemon

Well said.

Had you not watched the actual interview or had the opportunity to read what was factually said and you relied on the politicised version you may have had a different opinion. That is my point about weaponising /politicising the Corona Virus .

It's never ending and so sad when we are in such a horrid time.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:46:44

No he said “ one of the theories is, that perhaps you could take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the disease, as it were, to move through the population, without taking as many draconian measures”

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:45:34

POGS - I am well aware of both the context and the wording. There is no theory - apart from the one that exists in Johnson’s head perhaps - that suggests a good way of dealing with this pandemic is taking it on the chin and letting it run through the population. A poor choice of words followed by the usual meaningless waffle from Johnson.

Callistemon Sat 14-Mar-20 17:38:20

I just read that and BJ is saying we should not take it on the chin, not let it run amok, it is better to pace it.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 17:38:17

Sir Chenjin

Yes, a theory!

Johnson did not use the term ' take it on the chin' to suggest that is what the population should do as some would try and have others believe by regurgitating rubbish to suit their politicising of the situation.

Context!

Greeneyedgirl Sat 14-Mar-20 17:35:14

I am concerned that in all the discussions in the media there seems to be an alarming lack of compassion. Yes many will die, some will be left with lung conditions, most will be over 60, but they are human beings with families who love them.
They are not acceptable collateral damage.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:34:44

I thought Patrick Vallance said it was 60% for herd immunity?

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:33:35

Politicising?! grin Johnson said taking it on the chin was one theory - he was wrong. There is no rational theory which suggested one good way of dealing with the spread of covid19 was to let it spread through the population.

Daisymae Sat 14-Mar-20 17:30:20

The government aims for 40 percent of the population to have the disease so that herd immunity can develop. This theory has been slammed by WHO experts.

SirChenjin Sat 14-Mar-20 17:30:05

Not quite. If millions are off work then that includes NHS staff - which reduces the line of healthcare capacity. Multiple that across the sectors and it’s easy to see why herd immunity is really not a solution.

POGS Sat 14-Mar-20 17:29:54

"Well it’s a very, very important question, and that’s where a lot of the debate has been and one of the theories is, that perhaps you could take it on the chin, take it all in one go and allow the disease, as it were, to move through the population, without taking as many draconian measures. I think we need to strike a balance, I think it is very important, we’ve got a fantastic NHS, we will give them all the support that they need, we will make sure that they have all preparations, all the kit that they need for us to get through it. But I think it would be better if we take all the measures that we can now to stop the peak of the disease being as difficult for the NHS as it might be, I think there are things that we may be able to do."
----

That is ' NOT ' Johnson saying we have to ' Take it on the chin'. Can you not see or read ' context'.?

Stop weaponising/politicising the Corona Virus.

Callistemon Sat 14-Mar-20 17:27:43

As most people would get it mildly and not require medical intervention and if managed correctly to slow and lessen the peak, this is what would lessen the impact.
