Thank you, M0nica, for your thread. Whatever keeps you sane and positive in my view cannot be 'shallow' and considering WHO has published advice on how to care for our mental wellbeing during this crisis, your thread has left me feeling amongst friends.

My usual hairdresser had gone off on a jolly (will he be allowed back into the country, I wonder? That is if he was allowed out).
So a nice young girl who was rather scissor happy has cut it and it should last for four months!
Nails? No, maybe gardening will wreck them anyway.
Eyebrows? I pluck out the white ones and leave the rest.

Having never been glam, the best I ever hope for is clean and tidy anyway grin

I have just checked the seeds and we need to stock up, as my neighbour said 'we're going to have lovely gardens.'
I hope those who don't have a garden at least have a balcony where they can sit and view the world and get some fresh air.

(scrapes chair as I stand to say) "my name is nanaK and I am a shallow prattler" (grin)

Well I admit to being a scaredy-cat. I think 'they' haven't yet started locking us all away because they don't want us to give up too soon, not because they see no benefit yet. Have cancelled manicure and eyebrows due this week and am avoiding shops and buses. Thanks for the tip MOnica that we should dial our everyday wardrobe up a notch. Dashing off right now to look at stripey tops at Biden and Seasalt not to mention eyebrow pencil and a lipstick or two. Things are looking up.

Me I am just wondering whether to go to Specsavers Weds as I have lost specs and cannot find them and wearing old ones with transitions which go far too dark so just wear them in garden.
I do need the check up though!!

I don’t actually think that trying to keep yourself looking nice as shallow at all, I don’t want to be looking in the mirror Sick or not looking like tatty boggle the scarecrow,

Hairdresser's my limit too Trisher despite working next door to a beatician for years I've only ever crossed her door to hand in aparcel that was left with us.
I do look after my skin but I do it at home and I only cut and file my nails as long nails aren't practical in my line of work or watching small children.
I'll book a time when my hairdresser is quiet, early morning wednesday usually is deserted ,I go then anyway to fit round work .

MerylStreep Mon 16-Mar-20 11:22:55

No problem with the hair, my next door neighbour does it.
No problem with eyebrows. I've always been good with them as my mother showed me how when I was 14 ( I had a mono brow) not a good look ?
But I won't stop having my nails done. Going this Wednesday.

If I can't get a haircut my mental health will suffer. I have fine, thin hair and it needs cutting every 4 weeks to keep any kind of style. I will definitely be in complete self isolation if I can't have it done.

GrandmaMoira Mon 16-Mar-20 11:09:33

I've never had my nails done or been to a beautician. I used to wear nail varnish before I became allergic to it. I can't remember when I last bought makeup. I do go to the hairdresser but can happily cut my hair myself.
I wonder how many people are like me?

trisher Mon 16-Mar-20 11:02:03

OMG I'm amazed at all the stuff people have done. I've always known I had a hairdresser phobia and never go if I can help it, but the rest of the maintenance stuff had totally passed me by! My legs used to get shaved but the hairs have disappeared with age. I have had a manicure and a pedicure but very rarely. A bottle of nail varnish and a nail file are my solutions! No hairdressers or beauticians doesn't worry me much. It sounds like the telephone sanitisers from a Hitchhiker's Guide. (But actually apparently we should be sanitising our phones). Oh I've prattled my way to the forbidden subject. which gives me an idea for a new thread.

Great thread, Monica . We have to keep our spirits up somehow.

Three times I have been booked to have my hair cut and each time it has been cancelled by my hairdresser due to coughs - either herself or one of her children. She works from a small salon at her home. My hair is now a complete wispy mess and I am contemplating changing hairdressers but as I am paranoid about my hair, having been frequently told that it's "a nightmare", I dread having to get used to someone else. Have come home in tears more often than not through "challenging" haircuts.

Well done to all of us for keeping up standards (I sound like Mrs Bouquet)

My lovely hairdresser is coming to cut my hair tomorrow and I'm wondering how short to go so it will look ok for a few months if necessary. Lockdown will give me a chance to try a new style without frightening anyone else with my appearance.

Hetty58 Mon 16-Mar-20 10:55:28

Yipee for this thread - I can be incredibly shallow and/or serious (often at the same time) - take your pick!

Now is the ideal opportunity to dye my hair 'steel silver'. Instead of dying the silver bits blonde, I can dye the blonde bits silver - I can't wait

Nannylovesshopping Mon 16-Mar-20 10:54:52

shallow prattlers, that’s a bit harsh! I prefer to think of taking care of oneself, be it hair, nails etc., as a definite in these times, along with a large gin as and when needed?
We need to keep ourselves as cheerful as possible, whatever that may entail.
I shall self isolate without whinging, am lucky as have fabulous family support, but shall put the spaniel in the car and disappear to the remote woodlands I walk in, can’t give that up, and if someone wants to to fine me a thousand pounds for doing that, they will have to find me first ?

dizzyblonde Mon 16-Mar-20 10:52:56

I'm going to have my eyebrows and legs waxed and my eyelashes dyed. I love my beautician and if we all stop going there might not be a hairdresser or beautician left in 3 months. I'm also going to stop off at our local independent cafe on the way and have lunch.

kittylester Mon 16-Mar-20 10:50:57

I'm quite sure we can be both. I'm reading this while having my hair done. I suspect j shall regret not having my highlights done too. gg, I'm having mg feed done on Friday.

I aim to at least go into this looking halfway decent!!

Marmight Mon 16-Mar-20 10:49:59

Definitely a SP. I too have gel on my toenails. May get it removed before I leave Oz - if I do leave. Also worried about my hair appointment and just remembered the dentist in April and a massage already booked. Also my car’s due a service. Hope I’ll have time to squeeze all this in before being confined to barracks.

merlotgran Mon 16-Mar-20 10:46:44

I like a bit of shallow prattle as well.

I'm going to have to look closely at Joanna Lumley's hair and see if I can get mine like that without the thickening extensions.

By the time we emerge from isolation I will be expert at the 'messy bun' look.

Lucca Mon 16-Mar-20 10:45:56

I’m going to go and buy a bright colour feather down jacket that I’ve been too cautious (financially) to buy.
Hair cut tomorrow
At the risk of introducing a note of seriousness I actually wish they’d get on with the lockdown thing, it’s just hanging over our heads at the moment

Marydoll Mon 16-Mar-20 10:41:37

Well done, Monica! We need a bit of light relief in the midst of all this, otherwise I fear our mental and emotional wellbeing will be at risk as well as our physical.

As someone, who will probably not survive, I shall continue to be shallow, prattle and try to enjoy myself as much as possible.

Despite probably surviving, I bought a new dress online last night!

GrannyGravy13 Mon 16-Mar-20 10:41:05

Oh Monica I am definitely a shallow prattler, my one big concern at the moment is my nails.....I have shellac gel on both by toes and fingers, and I am dithering over whether to have it all removed and go bare or take the risk and put up with the unsightly growth (I do admit to being totally OCD regarding Polish of any sorts, cannot abide chipped varnish or uneven nails). I have my regular appointment this week and it is occupying far too much of my brain at the moment grin???

M0nica Mon 16-Mar-20 10:28:06

A number of us have been told off on other threads for being concerned about looking after our hair and ourselves while confined to home. Among other epithets we have been described as shallow and prattlers. I am quite unrepentantly a shallow prattler

I am certainly taking this crisis seriously, but I also believe that all work/worry and no play makes both Jack and Jacqueline dull people and that if we are to get through this current crisis mentally unscathed, we need to cultivate our capacity for fun and frivolity.

Todays news is that seclusion may be sometime away, which is a relief because although I had my hair cut last week, I am due to have my eye brows done in 10 days and I would like that doen first as well.

I am also considering reviewing my summer wardrobe. I dislike buying clothes online. They never fit, look awful and the quality is poor. I am wondering whether there are yet any summer clothes in the shops and whether I should try to get everything I may need now.

Now it is over to all the other shallow prattlers, what will you do to keep your morale up?
