How are gransnetters managing to have their hair cut and their toenails trimmed over the next few months?

Lizbethann55 Wed 01-Apr-20 23:18:47

I don't worry about myself. My hair is still naturally brown and a curly, wavy mess most of the time anyway and I can just about get to my toenails. But I do worry about my DH. He has a mass of fast growing white hair which was just getting to that "nearly needs a cut" stage when we went into lockdown. And he has Dennis Healey eyebrows!! He will look like Grizzly Adams by the time this is over!

I had my hair cut just before the lockdown so ok for now. If we're still in this position in six weeks I will cut the fringe myself.

There was a hairdresser on the One Show last week.

He demonstrated how to cut a fringe.

At the moment I am just going to let my hair grow, interested to see what colour it is,I have had my hair coloured and highlighted at the Hairdressers for years. So no idea how much is grey!

My hair isn't getting cut or dyed. I will be online teaching after the 20th though, so will have to make some attempt at tidying myself up. Currently, I look like a complete bag lady. I really don't care either.

Luckily I had my toenails done before the lockdown. I am partially visually impaired so I do not think doing it myself will be an option. The last time I tried, there was blood.

I can manage to cut the sides of my hair but the back will be rather uneven.

It is starting to look rather unkempt and will soon be sticking out at right angles. I have not had my hair at shoulder length or longer since I was around 8 years old.

My husband reckons he could give me a decent hair cut having watched a hairdresser on tv yesterday. I asked him to describe how he would do it. He is not cutting my hair!

I can manage my own toe nails but I'm in two minds about my hair.
I'll maybe let it grow longer and try a bob or cut it very very short which probably wouldn't suit me. It was like that after the chemo and it was quite liberating not having to faff about with shampoo, conditioner and the like.

Good luck MrGG

My fringe needs a trim but my hair is so thin I'm reluctant to do it myself in case I make things worse.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 01-Apr-20 11:59:59

My last time out of the house was to get the shellac/gel removed from my finger and toe nails, and have them cut as short as possible, that was six days before we were all officially confined to barracks. Both myself and the lovely nail technician wore masks and washed hands before, during and after.

As for my hair, the bob will just get longer and I shall be able to see if the grey is nice enough to stop hi lighting/low lighting.

Mr.GG has purchased clippers, watch this space as it could either end in a bloodbath or divorce!!!!

I gave myself a trim this morning, it's not too ghastly.
I used to cut my own hair until my grand-daughter took over.
And she gives me pink streaks regularly. She has left the pink stuff here, - dare I try doing that myself?

Lots of imaginative strategies here.

I cut my own hair a few days ago. I studied lots of videos on YouTube first. My husband held a mirror behind me so I could cut the back, which was quite difficult, but I managed. The top and sides were easier. I am very pleased with the result, I wouldn't be ashamed to let anyone see it, if we could go out anywhere! And I don't need the balaclava I knitted in case.

With my back injury - I'm far more worried about how to cut my toenails!

Chewbacca Tue 31-Mar-20 23:17:55

Better have a look at this before you do SirChenjin!

I’m back to dyeing my own hair - no highlights but it looks OK - and fortunately I had a big chunk of it cut off at the last visit to the hairdressers so it’s got room to grow. Depending on how long this all lasts I might be scanning YouTube for tips on how to cut your own hair though

Chewbacca Tue 31-Mar-20 22:31:06

My hairdressing appointment was actually for tomorrow at 11 o'clock and boy, do I need that cut and colour! I'll look like a yeti by the time I actually get there! Don't think I'll be cutting it myself but I might get desperate enough to colour it.

Floradora9 Tue 31-Mar-20 22:24:28

DH got the clippers out and did his own to-day . He keeps it really short , what there is of it left, so no problem . Mine will be difficult as it becomes wild if not kept short.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 31-Mar-20 22:13:18

I have always cut my own toenails, so no problems there but hair is another matter. I can cut my hair and have done so but only the front. So now I am going to just let it go, keep it tidy and see what a new style makes me look like. I have always cut Mr Barmeys little bit of hair so no problems there either but he is not going to be allowed to return the favour.

TrendyNannie6 Tue 31-Mar-20 21:14:30

I will be letting mine grow far more interested in keeping myself safe how ever long it takes, but I will still be dying it regularly, when it gets long enough to put up I shall do, I will have to cut my fringe myself

joannapiano Tue 31-Mar-20 21:11:31

I have just cut my fringe with my needlework scissors. It looks OK. I am now regretting growing my hair to celebrate turning 70. I am Rapunzel Mark 2.

paddyanne Tue 31-Mar-20 21:06:43

After seeing FB posts of our FM cutting her husbands hair (what he has of it) my OH thought he'd ask me to cut HIS....not a good idea nd no chance in hell of me going anywhere near his lovely curls .It would end in tears or divorce. Now on the lookout for a hairdresser who will cut it while gowned and masked and who wont cut it too short. He loikes his hair longish but by the time the Hairdressers shop is open again he'll look like a 1960's rock star .

Grannybags Tue 31-Mar-20 21:02:27

Luckily I have recently let my hair colour grown out and I am completely grey now (although I seem to be naturally 50 shades of grey confused)

However I do wear it very short and am planning to get the scissors out tomorrow as it's driving me mad already. I suppose there will be plenty of time for it to grow back before anyone except my husband has to see the result!

SalsaQueen Tue 31-Mar-20 20:47:02

ginny That's funny grin

ninathenana Tue 31-Mar-20 16:30:02

Willow I spent 3 hrs this morning trying to soak of my gel nails. I still have residue. I will have another attempt tomorrow.

Willow500 Tue 31-Mar-20 15:07:57

Cut my fingernails down this morning and will soak off the gels once the regrowth becomes loose. No one will see my toes for a long time so I'll just cut them myself.

I bought a pack of hair dye before lockdown as I haven't been able to see my hairdresser since before Christmas due to her partner's illness - her friend did it at the end of Jan but who knows when any of us will get back to a salon. I'm planning on getting my husband to help out grin
