I don't use social media, apart from Granset and am a complete novice. Friends and family are keeping in touch by phone, email and text which is great. However groups that I belong to have set up pages on Whatsapp and/or Facebook. I can't acccess whattsapp as I don't have a smartphone so would facebook be the next best thing? It looks like there is so much more on there than groups I belong to including links to what is happening in my neighbourhood/community at this time. Any advice/tips would be most welcome.

Facebook is very useful at the moment because local groups are putting offers of help on it, collecting prescriptions and shopping for elderly and vulnerable people

I like FB. I belong to local groups which keeps me up to date with local events and occurrences. most useful when the city is in gridlock! Sometimes posts and comments show the nicer and nastier members of the local area.
I also belong to groups that are a chance to exchange the lighter side of life with jokes, funny stories or events and a reading group. No swearing is allowed on there or on my friends and family group. Give it a try.

Actually, you don't need to have a smartphone to access WhatsApp.
My mum only has an old, bog standard pay-as-you-go mobile, but my son has just managed, remotely, to set up WhatsApp on her tablet for her, using just the mobile telephone number in some way.

I can't tell you how to do it, because it was beyond me, but it can be done, and we are now in touch every day via video!

I joined FB several years ago and I spend far to much time scrolling through my news feed and watching videos. I belong to several groups including, local history, local traffic and travel 3 older peoples groups plus others. All of which have proved invaluable in the past weeks. I rarely start a post but I do comment

Yes, great community links too. One in my area called ‘We Deliver’ has meant I can have meat, vegetables, medicines and toiletries, flour, dog food, all delivered by small local shops, pubs, etc..

FB is a great way to keep in touch. Just choose your friends with care and don’t accept requests from people unless you know them and want them.,

Yes, mainly to see what friends and family are doing in other parts of the country.

I love Facebook I have only half a dozen " friends " mostly relations but I subscribe to feeds for my hometown, the next town , the town where we used to live , crime book readers , slow cooker users . The list is endless . I love to share memories of my childhood with the people I probably grew up with. It is a great way to see how and what the family are doing . I only post to frieds and the groups I belong to and hide the names of my friends . This is a good way to avoid scammers taking over your account .

I rejoined Facebook recently after deleting my account some years ago. I use it for recipes and ideas. The local page is useful for finding out what is going on in our area. I only have relatives as friends.

MerylStreep shock

You'd think he'd be pleased that you alerted him to it.
I will say no more about him except that I think he has become a disappointment.

Are these the same firms that keep appearing, being stopped when we complain, then reappearing on Gransnet?

Yes, and, as others have said, that is where neighbourhood help groups have set up for vulnerable local people.

If you come into the vulnerable category it may be worth checking that out.

Facebook is good for keeping in touch with friends and family
Most areas have a local Facebook page, great for local news.
We have a local corona group, run by volunteers. It’s invaluable, giving lists of small businesses who deliver essentials, particularly given the difficulty getting supermarket deliveries,

Sar53 Thu 02-Apr-20 20:51:36

Yes I use Facebook, keep up to date with things going on locally. I also belong to lots of book groups. Watch your privacy settings and you will find a mine of information on there.

I’ve used FB for over 10 yeas. I’ve found old school friends on it and stay in touch with friends and family using it while living overseas.

It’s nice to see photographs from people at home and keep up to date with their lives.

Now, I’m using it to keep in touch daily. Make sure people are ok.

Urmstongran Thu 02-Apr-20 20:28:31

I’ve never signed up to it. No interest in it.

BlueSky Thu 02-Apr-20 20:18:37

Yes I still love FB. I was very reluctant to join but I've never looked back. It's a way of keeping in touch with friends near and far, old and new. Just watch your security settings and what info you put on there.

I've been thrown out twice by Mr Zuckerburg because of my comments about a certain countries clothing websites that scam people.

BlueBelle Thu 02-Apr-20 19:02:46

I love FB and use all the local sites and they all seem verY very active I ve just been talking to our local mayor on there and yes there’s a lot of good people out there

My daughter would class you as a Facebook ‘voyeur’ LOL.

jusnoneed Thu 02-Apr-20 18:59:42

I use it a lot. Keep in touch with family and belong to some local pages for where I grew up so have caught up with old friends too. Family history groups and a couple games I enjoy. I don't use Twitter or any phone apps. Just make sure you have highest security settings and be careful who you accept as friends.
Messenger is good and also has video chat.

PamelaJ1 Thu 02-Apr-20 18:49:21

I am a member, occasionally have a look, never post on it or like or comment.
I do use messenger though, and have a small group of friends and relatives that talk and message a lot.

Vicbar Thu 02-Apr-20 18:31:13

Yes. And I was sniffy about it until Corona hit.
Through FB, I have found:
volunteers who call on my dad every morning to check he is okay and bring him milk and bread (i visit once a week as its a 1.5 hr journey each way and take him shedloads of food up).
* local companies who deliver not only food, but garden centres who will bring supplies.
* i have had the opportunity to volunteer my services in the village. I walk a dog for a 94 year old and have just dropped some paperbacks and dvds off at a nursing home.

There is a lot of bad about social media, but it is capable of so much good too.

janeainsworth Thu 02-Apr-20 18:24:38

Yes I find it very useful or keeping in touch with family and friends.
I also belong to a couple of photography groups, and a group which shares photos and memories of my home town.

In normal times, I get information about concerts and gigs and other events which I otherwise wouldn’t know were happening.
