Excuses

The excuses on here for going out are increasing again. No hair dressers this time, but exercise and dogs.

What is WRONG with people?

GracesGranMK3 Mon 06-Apr-20 12:34:54

Absolutely, GracesgranMK3

Please, the holier than thou stance you are taking, Gagajo, has no legs to stand on.

Callistemon Mon 06-Apr-20 16:33:55

Would you rather I had waited until I had nowhere to go (my school closed down) and then demand that I was repatriated at the UK's expense Callistemon? FFS.

I don't really mind one way or the other Gagjo, I have no preference whether you waited or came home.

What shocked me was that you got off a plane and went straight home and cuddled your little grandson.

That was irresponsible in the extreme.

There is no need to swear. I am not the one being unreasonable.

SallyB392 Mon 06-Apr-20 16:31:10

I'm so confused......Gagajo, pleased to hear you are well, and everyone else.......

But what on earth has all the backbiting been about? I thought that this group was meant to be a group of grandmothers, with a remit for discussion and support.

I'm guessing that everyone is a bit more jumpy and sensitive than usual.......

GagaJo Mon 06-Apr-20 14:21:50

As I said, I do everything I can. We leave the groceries in the bags in a porch to a door we don't use.

The frozen etc, I bleach wipe down before putting in the freezer (read on here AND double checked, the virus can live for up to 2 years if frozen). Then wash hands VERY well. Then take clothes off (usually wear yesterdays clothes for this task), wash hands and get dressed again.

There is a whole thread about this somewhere on here.

Yes, I'm aware there is ALWAYS some risk. But we have minimized it as much as possible. After that, it's in the lap of the gods.

vampirequeen Mon 06-Apr-20 14:15:25

Where do you leave them for 3 days? Doesn't the frozen stuff defrost? If you're taking it out of the bag on the day of delivery then the virus could be on the bag. You cannot avoid this virus all together.

GagaJo Mon 06-Apr-20 14:09:12

Yes, Vampirequeen, I am. We leave our groceries for 3 days before unpacking.

I bleach wipe the chill/frozen packaging.

Basically, I do everything I can. If I still get it, I've done my best.

GagaJo Mon 06-Apr-20 14:07:19

I'm not engaging with you GGMK3. You just want an argument. Look elsewhere.

vampirequeen Mon 06-Apr-20 14:06:43

Aren't you worried that the food you're getting delivered is contaminated? After all, someone had to pack it and deliver it. Anyone within that process could have had the virus but been showing no symptoms.

Surely if you're going to totally self isolate then you have to cease all physical contact with the outside world.

I caught it (well I had all the symptoms). I'm definitely not bleating about following the rules. Whether we like it or not this virus will affect millions of us. The rules are there to slow the spread not to stop it completely.

GracesGranMK3 Mon 06-Apr-20 12:34:54

I think GagaJo, if you had not come on here berating people who were actually following what the government had told them to do, people would have been kinder about how they replied. I'm still not sure why you think people should follow your rules as opposed to the government ones?

You shouted the odds about how others were behaving, when in fact they were doing the right thing. What did you expect?

GagaJo Mon 06-Apr-20 11:49:20

Would you rather I had waited until I had nowhere to go (my school closed down) and then demand that I was repatriated at the UK's expense Callistemon? FFS. NOWHERE was in lockdown (other than Lombardy) when I left. AND I developed the cough AFTER I got home.

If you're going to castigate me and drag up the past, at least get it right. I developed the cough after I'd been home a couple of days. And I think it was psychosomatic because it lasted a couple of days then went away again.

I don't have issues with people shopping. Of course not. I'm glad we haven't had to and are fortunate enough to have had deliveries. I know not everyone is lucky enough.

I have a friend who has been following those rules for 3 weeks and who has now developed the virus. So those rules clearly don't work. She's in her 30s and hopefully will be OK. But most of us on here aren't. Bleating 'But I followed the rules!' won't help then.

Callistemon Mon 06-Apr-20 11:30:06

What is WRONG with people

I am interested to know why someone who flew home from overseas and did not self-isolate away from her family, especially saying she had a cough, should question others who are going for their daily walk, well away from others, buying essential food and observing the rules?

confused

I am not going anywhere neither is my DH because I am in lockdown. But someone will kindly do our shopping (we hope) and put it on the doorstep, retreat down the path and stop for a chat.
That means they have been OUT.

May7 Sun 05-Apr-20 21:57:31

Gagajo I dont blame you one bit. Stay indoors keep your family safe. Everyone is apparently being very sensible and observing the rules? Well not here they're not!! Grandchildren running up and down the cul de sac visiting grandparent. Daughter stood at end of drive next to mother. Neighbours out walking never seen them walking before. Family dropping off food and handing bags over on doorstep. One guy walking his little dog 3x today.
That's just today Sunday.... got to go out shopping tomorrow because I cant get my ocado shop it's still stuck in its basket awaiting a delivery slot and counting. Need to shop for elderly parents and I'm dreading it but needs must. My little dog exercising in back garden with DH . Feel Lucky to have one - and a garden of course.
Keep your spirits up gagajo

I am astonished that people were still allowed to take flights after disembarking from a cruise liner in Australia.

Planes must be a prime place for transmitting the virus.

Hetty58 Sun 05-Apr-20 21:37:34

GagaJo, you said 'If it isn’t passed from person to person, eventually, it’ll die down.' That is factually incorrect.

The whole point of isolation and social distancing is to just slow down the rate/number of infections - not to stop them. Our NHS would be unable to help so many people if we let it run riot.

The virus will continue to spread easily until about 80% of the population has had it. At that time, it will have a low chance of infecting new people - only then will it die down.

Therefore, isolation is slowing down the process.

Why question those going out for exercise? The dangerous virus spreaders are those who are going into shops. Of course, we can't ban shopping or people will starve. Why people have to go quite so often, I really cannot fathom.

Oopsadaisy3 Sun 05-Apr-20 21:18:01

It seems that to ’keep granny alive’ the OP has locked her family indoors!
I too assumed that the OP was in lockdown because of her recent arrival in the U.K.
I will walk in the countryside, which luckily is outside my front door, for as long as we are able to, when we are told that we can’t go out then I will stay indoors.
Let’s be clear here, we are all indoors to give the NHS a breathing space, so that when we are infected there will (hopefully) be the medical equipment available that we will need to save our lives. This is a delay tactic, when we go out later in the year the virus will still be there and most people will be infected, we won’t be safe until a vaccination programme is in place.
To preserve our mental health we should go out for our daily walks until we are prevented from doing so by the Government.
Let’s hope that the numbers of idiots out in their numbers aren’t enough to make us all suffer.

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:10:55

Starblaze a couple of people have run marathons in their small back gardens!

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:07:20

Fudging autocorrect!
I hope ykwim

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 21:05:48

Exactly

Gagajo do you not have a garden that your DGS can play in?
If not, a walk would be permitted as long as you do not go near anyone else. You could look for teddy bears and rainbows.
He must be understanding why he can't go outside.

Callistemon Sun 05-Apr-20 20:58:01

I am not going out because I have had The Letter.

However, if I was a fit and healthy under-70 with a dog I would go for a walk, observing all the rules. If I was a fit and healthy young person with a child I would take them on a Bear Hunt, observing all the rules.

I think that yes, Gagajo may be in isolation, very sensibly, as she has flown back from overseas and did not feel well.

I hope you can take your DGS out for a little walk soon, Gagjo, perhaps on reins which could be a good idea at the moment?

MawB Sun 05-Apr-20 20:18:17

I'm sure 3 weeks ago, when my family went into lockdown, you thought I was illogical and reactionary
I wasn’t aware Gagajo’s family had gone into lockdown but if I had been it would IMO have possibly been because she had flown back from Switzerland, just beating a ban on travel and apparently just over the border from N Italy and was, furthermore, complaining of a cough

Smileless2012 Sun 05-Apr-20 17:57:00

Exactly ginny. I was relieved that exercising outside hasn't been banned and can only hope that most stupid and irresponsible will stop breaking the rules.

Doorstop Sun 05-Apr-20 17:53:38

People still coming and going here, couple opposite having visitors and hugging each other. Have only been out three times, once to collect DH medication, once for a walk but as we live in built up area got fed up with dodging other people and once to drop off provisions to DD as she is vulnerable and could not get an online shop. Fed up with all the neighbours not taking it seriously.

ginny Sun 05-Apr-20 17:31:37

I don’t see what is so difficult to understand.
We can go out to buy food and
we can exercise outside , within our own neighbourhood , keeping the rules of social distancin

We cannot go to other people’s homes be they relatives or friends.

Sunbathing, picnics and chatting with friends does not count as exercise.

Oopsminty Sun 05-Apr-20 17:06:52

Matt Hancock has said that tougher restrictions are not imminent

My dog will be happy

Calendargirl Sun 05-Apr-20 17:05:20

Does GagaJo think we should not go outside at all even in to our own gardens? She seems to want everyone to remain indoors the whole time. Until we are told otherwise, I shall go in to my garden, go for a walk if I want to, go to the supermarket and butchers if I need to.
