Today's update is being led by Priti today, maybe they saw our thread ?

lemongrove Sat 11-Apr-20 18:25:10

I agree Eglantine it’s both snobbish and catty actually.
So Priti Patel doesn’t speak as one who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth....so what? She speaks perfectly clearly, my hearing isn’t the best, but I heard every word.

Oh, I don't know, eg (g pronounced). If it's this angry it's probably socialist ?

Eglantine21 Sat 11-Apr-20 18:19:24

Actually I find the mocking of somebody’s accent a really snobby thing to do. It’s not something I would have expected from people who believe in socialism.

As I watched this update, my son messaged me from his apartment in New York. It is very near to the Hospital with the refrigerated trailers being used as temporary morgues and is featured in the online BBC news update today. He and his wife are working from the apartment and are together, so that gives me some comfort.

Yes but Patel cannot be remotely described as a toff, so I wonder why. Is it an affectation?

growstuff Sat 11-Apr-20 17:30:17

Listen to some "toffs". They do the same thing, but it's in the context of a whole range of upper class pronunciation, so doesn't sound weird.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 17:29:05

I bet Patel does. She takes dropping the g to a whole new level

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 17:27:59

growstuff that’s interesting.

growstuff Sat 11-Apr-20 17:27:50

Not pronouncing "ng" (known as "g dropping") only happens with participles, nouns where "ing" is a suffix and some words like "something". Nobody would say "sin" instead of "sing".

Bringing back back packers and travellers who were refused entry to Australia or New Zealand or just caught out elsewhere by the lockdown. Some are complaining about not being picked up quickly enough and others here complaining that they are being flown home at all.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t!

Baggs

Workin’ mornin’ facin’ grrrrrr

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 17:23:26

Another car crash of a press conference.

“I’m sorry you feel there isn’t sufficient PPE, but the government is working 24/7 “

Not half as sorry as the relatives as the clinicians who have died.

24/7 not being particularly effective is it.

After this mornings Today and Hancocks crash, they wheeled in Patel. But she was no better at answering questions.

growstuff Sat 11-Apr-20 17:22:58

Not pronouncing "ng" is historically an aristocratic affectation. Patel is an MP for part of North West Essex. I live here and I've never heard anybody talk quite like she does. It's rare to hear a proper Essex accent. Many people have come from London and I expect it's Patel's London background which is responsible. I find her accent jars because it sounds fake to me. Sometimes she pronounces vowel sounds in an overpronounced "public school" way; at other times I can hear the London accent.

Baggs Sat 11-Apr-20 17:15:28

Bob, some of the flights will be bringing in supplies, won't they?

Baggs Sat 11-Apr-20 17:10:29

Oooohhhh! I see! She says k instead. Gotcha!

Baggs Sat 11-Apr-20 17:09:34

Trying to think of words with g at the end that needs pronouncing....

She never says e for egg, does she?

There's all the words ending in -ing but one doesn't pronounce those gs.

<Baggs wanders off wondering>

Barmeyoldbat Sat 11-Apr-20 17:08:25

I wish someone would ask why they haven't stopped flights and passengers coming into the country.

tanith Sat 11-Apr-20 17:05:02

7 days a week in the Home Office, well that’s alright then ?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 17:01:18

Oh how busy she had been!!

EllanVannin Sat 11-Apr-20 16:59:39

I've just given my sixpenn'orth on one of the most heinous of crimes, domestic abuse, on another thread.

Pittcity Sat 11-Apr-20 16:59:20

I think that she can't help the smirk.
She is an Essex MP and seems to have acquired some of the local lazy language...innit?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 16:49:13

Indeed pogs

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Apr-20 16:46:32

Somethink ??????

kittylester Sat 11-Apr-20 16:44:46

I am so pleased with the domestic abuse initiative!

SirChenjin Sat 11-Apr-20 16:41:00

We can but hope WWMk2!

Agree vegan - I really hope she’s reflected on her previous stance, has come to accept it was the wrong approach and has the grace to thank everyone who doesn’t earn the required amount but who has put their life on the line. There’s no monetary value that can be assigned to that.
