Will you be wearing a mask?

When we are eventually allowed outside will you be wearing a mask? Some countries have made it mandatory but the WHO were saying the other day that it dosn’t necessarily protect you. If you were infectious but didn’t know it might stop you infecting others if you coughed on them. But would it make you feel safer by wearing one and what sort would you wear?
I think I might, I just don’t know.

I would wear one only if it was mandatory. I have lots of lovely fabrics upstairs so I'm planning a work of art just in case

No.

I have worn a home made mask when I have had to go out shopping as it stops me from touching my face.

Bossyrossy Mon 20-Apr-20 17:29:00

If they protect others then others wearing masks protect you, therefore for everyone’s safety we should all wear one when we are out and about.

Masks and gloves are pointless. Gloves can spread the virus around . Just wash you hands when you get home . Nurses have to be fit tested for their masks . They put the mask on and water is sprayed at them, if the moisture can get through / around the mask then so can the virus. The virus also can enter through your eyes . I wouldn’t be bothered .

Yes we will be as we are now and we go out. Order them online. There is plenty available I have found on the teo main selling platforms.

How much good they do I don't know however it reminds people to keep the 2 metre distance when they see you coming I've found

Back again, just made the sock mask, it’s brilliant!

I have made myself three masks. Each one is washed after wearing. So I am not depriving any NHS worker of equipment.

I wish people would stop writing as if anyone wearing a mask was an idiot and not aware that masks have there own problems. We have variously been told that it will make us touch our faces more often because we will feel invulenerable. No it wont't, we are quite aware of that danger, now it is being assumed that we will wear one mask constantly and not wash it regularly, no, we have worked that one out as well, then it is assumed because we are wearing a mask we will not wash our hands keep our distance etc etc. or do any of the other things we have been told to do. Yes, all these things are possible, but are not the inevitable result of wearing a mask.

I have had a bad cold for the last week, coughing and sneezing, runny nose, no it is not covid. My masks, mean that when I go out once a week to do the shopping I do not cough and sneeze over other customers in the shop. The aerosol from a cough and/or sneeze can travel a lot more than 2 metres.

I also do not cough or sneeze into a sleeve and then rub the sleeve up a set of shelves when reaching for something on the top shelf spreading any bacteria or viruses over the food on sale or the shelves themselves.

I have made a thoughtful and considered decision to wear a mask in shops, as have most mask wearers, and I am well aware of the problems associated with it. There is growing support for the belief that a home made mask is not as good as a medical mask, but it still can be effective in giving some protection to wearer and those near them. hfullfact.org/health/coronavirus-public-wearing-masks/

I wear gloves as well. Lets now have a slew of posts telling us of the dangers of wearing them twice, disposing of them safely etc etc.

Chrisssyh, just watched the video using a sock, must say it’s even easier than the t shirt sleeve mask. Off now to hunt down a white sock! Thanks for the tip.

Llamedos13 Mon 20-Apr-20 15:48:01

Super easy way to make a mask by cutting the sleeves from an old t shirt then cutting the band from the bottom to make ties. Search you tube “mask made using t shirt sleeves”

Yes, if legally required to do so.

It is true you can make masks yourself but, if you did that, you would not necessarily make it correctly.

This means that people would have to be issued with masks and, as there are insufficient masks for NHS workers etc., I don't see how they could make it law.

vegansrock Mon 20-Apr-20 15:37:37

Well if we can be taught how to wash our hands correctly we can be taught how to use a mask correctly.

granju Mon 20-Apr-20 15:26:06

Excluding healthcare workers. wearing masks randomly as members of the public is risky. They trap the moisture from your own mouth/nose, which then leads to a damp surface inside the mask. Damp surfaces are a magnet for germs themselves. The public need to change their masks frequently for them to be effective. Remember the virus lasts on the outside of a mask for 7 days. Leave masks for healthcare workers who change them often, dispose of them correctly, and understand their use. Unless you are sick, there is no need.

BlueSky I said that to dh - theyd have to be issued. He has some exertise in ppe and laughed. The fabric type need to be changed often, he mentioned less than an hour before being changed - it would be a mammoth task.

Yes I would wear a mask when we're eventually allowed out if only to reassure other people I came into contact with. I ordered a few filter masks online but still awaiting delivery. If they don't get used for CV they will always be useful for spray painting or dusty DIY tasks.

I've also made masks for DH for dog walking (the only time he goes out) and he says nobody looks surprised to see him wearing it. He often walks the dog past fields of Rape so it might also help him avoid hayfever this year. I made the masks from cotton cambric (a very tight dense weave) lined with cotton lawn, with wire nose grips (pipe cleaners) and elastic ear loops. They fit snuggly around the face and we did the candle test and they worked. So better than nothing I guess.

Well this me wearing a mask in hospital today while having a bone strengthening infusion. When I was here last week wearing a mask made me feel very anxious and was dreading today. But today it isn't a problem.

chrissyh Mon 20-Apr-20 13:56:37

Re above - just click on it- didn't know whether it would give a link that works.

chrissyh Mon 20-Apr-20 13:55:16

I saw a video on youtube on how to make a mask that doesn't need sewing and is made from a sock - www.youtube.com/results?search_query=making+a+mask+out+of+a+sock copy and paste. Chose the lady with the purple top. It is in a foreign language but is so easy to follow.

absthame Mon 20-Apr-20 13:53:35

I do wear them together with gloves, when visiting customers for repair or installation of kit. I also give customers a pair of gloves to handle kit handled by me. All basic courtesy. However the masks have the advantage of protecting me from the stench of diesel, petrol and scents worn by people that have dramatic effect on my ability to breath.

Gransing Mon 20-Apr-20 13:43:46

That sounds a good idea. Where is the video?

Noreen3 Mon 20-Apr-20 13:39:00

yes,I'd wear one if we have to,I haven't got one at the moment, they would have to work and be readily available.I wouldn't buy anything online that I wasn't sure of

HannahLoisLuke Mon 20-Apr-20 13:27:17

Charleygirl5 I wore gloves to the clinic because I had to go there in a taxi, which although clean has surfaces which you can't help touching getting in and out. Once at the clinic there's the lift button, chairs etc
I kept my gloves and mask on until I returned home. Once there I first washed my hands wearing the gloves, then again without after first removing my mask carefully by the ear loops and dropping it into the sink for washing in Milton.
The nurses at the clinic said I was doing the right thing. OK?

Katek Mon 20-Apr-20 13:17:45

seefah buy yourself a Buff or similar. You can pull it up over your mask so you lose the Darth Vader look! They’re designed to wash/dry v quickly so easy to clean them every time they’re worn.

Gma29 Mon 20-Apr-20 13:15:16

No, not unless they become compulsory. Sadly medics are still being infected despite the PPE, so I don’t think a home made mask is going to be of any use. I don’t wear gloves either. I do carry wipes and alcohol gel, and hand-wash very frequently.

I do think there was a big mistake made early on, when numbers were relatively low, not to stringently contact trace and quarantine. Other countries doing better than us seem to have put more effort into this.

Pat123 Mon 20-Apr-20 13:12:05

Yes, I always wear one when going to supermarket plus disposable gloves. I ordered online via Amazon. Masks protect and remind others to keep their distance and are washable.
