I’m not wearing one unless I’m absolutely told to do so they make me nervous yes I’m asthmatic but I would feel stupid wearing one and can’t stand anything over my face!

Oopsadaisy3 Mon 27-Apr-20 08:38:13

Harris I’d rather look stupid and be protected and protect others.
I wore one on Friday going into the chemist and no one batted an eye.
It’s very common in some countries, they are considering checking if the virus can be carried along on exhaust fumes etc.
So it isn’t even people you are at risk from.
For me to feel safer until a vaccine comes out, I will wear a mask, I already look ‘stupid’ and will, until I get to a hairdresser, anyway.

Germany is now apparently having problems in supply of masks to medical services since wearing for the public became compulsory.

Why are people against them, surely anything that just might help protect you and others should be used. I have been wearing mine since mid March, I don't care what others think, as far I am concerned I am stopping the spread by wearing it and hopefully receiving some protection as well. If they didn't work why are NHS staff wearing them?

rosecarmel, I so agree with you. I have been annoyed for years (not constantly but at the time around Christmas when Flu strikes everyone) with family, former colleagues and friends who think they are being stoic still out and about working socially when infected, putting me -and others- at risk of catching their germs and having exacerbated asthma which colds and flu trigger in me. The problem is they don’t tell me beforehand so I can stay away. They tell me when they are sitting 3 feet away!! That’s my rant for the day over, promise.

And to keep the thread going ...... yes I would wear a mask and have done on airplanes. But at the moment I’m only taking an occasional short walk or short car ride to vets for meds for poorly cat.

a video about what they did in the czech republic.

if you believe we should all be wearing masks, you could just sign the petition and/or paste it on to other websites, facebook and twitter accounts...

thank you

have a good day!

I was out this morning to do my weekly shop and more than half the people I saw , including me, were wearing one. Makes a petition somewhat redundant.

goldenlady1 Mon 27-Apr-20 11:38:43

viruses are pesky creatures - i think we need to do what we can fight them!

only takes about 20seconds to sign the petition...

MawB Mon 27-Apr-20 11:45:59

Signing a petition is about as useless a defence against Covid19 as the Donald’s disinfectant advice.
Why on earth do people thing “signing a petition” is somehow being proactive?

goldenlady1 Mon 27-Apr-20 11:50:53

>Why on earth do people thing “signing a petition” is somehow being proactive?

Presumably because doing something is inherently more proactive than doing nothing?

goldenlady1 Mon 27-Apr-20 12:09:16

@greeneyedgirl

>Firstly, your link goldenlady doesn't work.

It does, just not automatically like a video link - you will have to paste it in.

>Secondly, even if mask wearing was compulsory it would be difficult/impossible to police.

It has been done in many countries.

>Thirdly, would the government be able to supply approved style masks to everyone in the country I wonder. It's difficult enough for the vulnerable to get a flipping food delivery.

The solution is we probably need to start making our own.

No, it is fooling yourself that somehow you are doing something a typical enough social media fallacy.
PS may I respectfully recommend you check out how to quote on GN. It’s the ^^ symbols not the <>
You will find it at the foot of the page if you are new.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 27-Apr-20 13:00:33

Disagree MawB, buy signing a petition it is a way of voicing the publics opinion. Why sit back and do nothing, make your voice heard in every way possible if you believe in what you are signing and I do.

rosecarmel Mon 27-Apr-20 13:10:54

I'd sign a petition regardless of another's petition not to bother- smile

goldenlady1 Mon 27-Apr-20 13:16:30

I'd imagine people who have got friends and family working in shops or buses or who are more fragile themselves or have lost somebody to the dreadful disease...

May want to do something about it...

Even if it's just forwarding on to the link at the bottom of a regular email...

I hope you're all having a good day and stay safe.

notanan2 Mon 27-Apr-20 13:22:28

Presumably because doing something is inherently more proactive than doing nothing?

No its not

Petitions get the topic discussed in parliament if they reach a certain number of signatures.

Facemasks are being discussed in parliament. It's not a topic thats not already on an agenda. The petition is therefore moot.

So people signing this petition clearly don't understand what petitions are for.

Being "productive" would be making or getting their own masks, and maybe some for family and friends, and taking some personal responsibility rather than wanting everything mandated for them.

polyester57 Mon 27-Apr-20 13:38:06

An update here from the Czech Republic, "mandatory" certainly means that you can take your face mask off when talking to a person, who is hard of hearing, just keep your distance. All the TV newscasters wear face masks, the sign language ones have transparent shields. Face masks have moved on a bit from the first batches of home-made ones. Now women have ones to match their outfits, businessmen have sombre grey or navy to maych their suits, children have cartoon chatacters, the police and army have their own. I made some in the first instance, but I'm not very good at this, so I bought ten from some ladies from a bridal salon, who would otherwise be out of a job, they (the masks) are luxurious, made of very fine cotton, double-sided with elastic round the ears. We are told we'll be wearing them until July, maybe forever.

Barmeyoldbat Mon 27-Apr-20 16:15:43

OK so the government are discussing facemarks, fine it does no harm and one takes a few seconds to sign a petition and let the government know what the people think and want.

notanan2 Mon 27-Apr-20 16:20:14

Petitions dont guide the outcome of the discussion, they just get the topic put on the list if it has enough signatures. Which it already is.

Why sign a thing if you dont know how it works?

notanan2 Mon 27-Apr-20 16:24:21

People are having job losses forced upon them because of lockdown

So why dont the lockdown fans OPT to stay locked down and give up their incomes instead.

Except they wont.

Or they already have non employment dependant income streams and dont care about those who are losing their jobs

MayBee70 Mon 27-Apr-20 16:39:07

So, lets all come out of lockdown and go for herd immunity? Is that what you're advocating?

notanan2 Mon 27-Apr-20 16:47:56

There is a tipping point where lockdown does more harm than good.

notanan2 Mon 27-Apr-20 16:48:38

People can still shield without lockdown
