SubscribeSix multi-millionaires who bankrolled the Conservative party’s election victory last December have called for Boris Johnson to ease coronavirus lockdown restrictions.
The group of donors are seeking to put pressure on the Prime Minister as he returns to work on Monday, citing fears over the potential for further damage to the UK economy.
Financier Michael Spencer, who has donated over £5m to the Tories in the last few years, told The Sunday Times: “We should start loosening up the lockdown as soon as we reasonably can and allow the economy to start moving forward.
“We should really begin to offer a narrative of how and when it’s going to stop.”
Financier Michael Spencer is one of those putting pressure on the Prime Minister.
While Steve Morgan, the former boss of the housebuilder Redrow, who gave £1m to the Conservatives’ general election campaign, said: “We’re actually in danger that the medicine, if you want to call the lockdown that, is more harmful than the cure.”
Billionaire Peter Hargreaves, Phones4u founder John Caudwell, banker Sir Henry Angest and restaurateur Richard Caring - who donated over £2m to the election campaign between them - also called for an easing of the lockdown measures.
Despite originally setting a review date of April 13, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said on April 16 that the shutdown would be extended for at least three more weeks.
The situation will be reviewed again on May 7.
At the Downing Street briefing on Saturday, Home Secretary Priti Patel refused to comment on what the Government's exit strategy was, saying it would be "irresponsible" to get people's hopes up.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has also stepped up pressure on the Government to set out an "exit strategy" for lifting the lockdown.
In a letter to Mr Johnson he said the UK was again in danger of falling behind other countries, which were already engaged in "adult" conversations with their citizens as to how the restrictions could be eased.
"The British public have made great sacrifices to make the lockdown work. They deserve to be part of an adult conversation about what comes next. If we want to take people with us and secure their consent, this is necessary now,” the letter reads.
The Government insists that the lockdown must continue, but some Britons have been tempted back outside to green spaces by days of constant sunshine.

I’m with you GagaJo on this topic. And well done you for not flying back to Switzerland next month. Your health IS paramount.
Boris thinks we are not ready to end lockdown yet. The U.K. is 2 weeks behind us over here in Spain and no-one is allowed to go out for exercise yetand we are into our 7th week!! Children were only allowed out for the first time yesterday, after 42 days of enforced confinement (with police patrolling suburban streets).
The piper used to call the tune.
But not THIS time. The money hawks will have to wait a little longer.
Well said Boris! Some clarity at last - even though it’s an unpopular decision in some quarters.
You want everything and everyone else to wait for the impossible!
Its an unachievable goal
We CAN achieve risk reduction of other things though, if we end lockdown now that it has already done what it initially set out to do: give hospitals time to reconfigure (done). And spread out (NOT REDUCE) transmission (done)
Notana2 ; At last we have got there. Yes lockdown had to be introduced. The thing is we are still not completely safe to all come out of it
We never will be
That was never the aim of lockdown in the first place!
It was only ever about flattening the curve and buying reconfiguration time, at some point everybody has to be exposed unless they chose to miss haversham until they die!
Lockdown never promised a Covid free world at the end of it.
That was never the aim.
Notana2 ; At last we have got there. Yes lockdown had to be introduced. The thing is we are still not completely safe to all come out of it and although we may not see how many deaths have happened we do know that there has been thousands. We can sit at home feeling fed up with it all but we have got to be patient. If everything starts up and we are caught up in multiple deaths we will have a tougher lockdown than we already have.
I agree with lockdown being introduced
I do not agree with it being prolongued beyond the point where the risks of lockdown itself bypass the initial benefits.
Notanan2 post at 16.29.
Lockdown is inflicted on the poor for the benefit of the privileged.
Notanan2 now you are being silly. You know very well why lockdown was introduced and the reasons and seemingly it has worked successfully all we need now is some patience to keep going and keep the country safe.
Yes it is difficult for many people and hard to put food on the table but don't forget that the food banks are still there and are helping many. People have no shame to go to the foodbank these are drastic times and trying to stay alive is the most important.
People in HMOs, high rises, houseshares and hostels were never able to lockdown anyway.
Let them get back to work & having full health and social care.
House dwellers can stay home if they like..
Lockdown is inflicted on the poor for the benefit of the privilidged.
I have no idea how old you are or what your personal situation is notanan but I'm extremely grateful that you're not advising the government.
Are you also glad that cancer charities and other specialist doctors who are issuing these warnings, arent being heeded?
So how does somebody who chooses to leave their job earn any money? Is the choice work or die?
People are already not earning because of lockdown.
Not everyone who is off work because of lockdown is furloughed.
People right now dont have enough to put food on the table.
Most ppl shouting for indefinite lockdowns have income sources that will sustain them but others dont. Would they be willing to swap places?
Have you been on the Domestos and Tonic again notanan?
I have no idea how old you are or what your personal situation is notanan but I'm extremely grateful that you're not advising the government.
Ending lockdown too late means rates of other emergencies skyrocket.
So how does somebody who chooses to leave their job earn any money? Is the choice work or die?
More like the rest of you would work and many would get sick and some would die!
Shielding can continue without general lockdown.
So can telephone triages
Phone appointments for those that they work for
Social distancing
Etc.
Ending lockdown doesnt mean everyone is instantly forced out of their homes and made to lick each other or else
You can quit your job and see nobody if you want you would be free to do that
So who would choose not to be locked down?
How about aiming to reduce the level of infection, so that patients who require hospitalisation could be treated in isolation units?
That would mean that hospitals and other services could operate more or less as normal.
That won't happen if the country lifts restrictions too early without an element of moderation and control. Rates of infection would skyrocket, hospitals would be totally overwhelmed and hundreds of thousands of people would be dead.
Given all the above, I'm more likely to get seriously ill (or dead) from Covid-19 than from the chronic conditions I have which aren't being treated.
But if lockdown ended, you could still stay in! Your treatments arent manditory! You could CHOSE not to go if you think your risks outweighed your benefits
Anyway ending lockdown isnt manditory.
Stay indoors for the rest of your life if you want to.
Let the rest of us work & thrive!
It depends what you're not being treated for.
I'm T2 diabetic and I'm fully aware of the dangers of not treating it. However, I was diagnosed 30 years ago and I'm still doing OK. I don't really need the annual reviews because I take my own blood pressure and test my own blood glucose. I also follow a fairly strict diet and exercise. I have a pretty good idea what the results of the blood test, which has been postponed, would be.
If I were to be infected with Covid-19, there's (according to the tables I've seen) a 15% it would kill me. There's also news that the infection can do long term, permanent damage to the lungs and the kidneys. That's apart from not being in a fit state to earn any money for six weeks or so.
Given all the above, I'm more likely to get seriously ill (or dead) from Covid-19 than from the chronic conditions I have which aren't being treated.
You seemingly want to get out into public again and not give a hoot that the country could so quickly go into the 2nd stage of rising deaths and the N.H.S could be completely overwhelmed
The 2nd wave is now looking like it'll be from non CV causes and due to lockdown. You are the one who doesnt seem to give a "hoot" about that!
Once again you are ranting about all the drugs deaths and their childrens deaths and ignoring the point that people are there trying to support them
No Im not. People "trying to support them" does not = business or usual or indeed best practice for their condition, no matter how hard ppl are working.
but they will probably be of no use to you if you get infected with covid 19
Statistically I am more likely to get seriously ill from what I am not getting treatment for than I am to get seriously ill if I get CV19
