I have an airer in our spare bathroom too. I find all my washing dries overnight without any heat.
When you live in a flat you have to make all space count. Like you we have a large flat but we have limited cupboard space.. we are lucky to have a large cupboard in the landing outside our front door which holds a multitude of odds and ends and is fondly referred to as the shed!

lemon the Argy is certainly a place to be remembered. I’d forgotten charley dancing on the table. I will have to remind her of that next time she tells me off for being late to school ? Your son certainly has a good plan for getting you to make cakes. Hope you enjoy your sponge.
charley bread and butter was a staple of almost all meals in my younger days. I remember my dad coming to ask me late in the evenings if I wanted a bit of bread and butter before bed ?
dragonfly I remember my first bike. A blue one. I came off it more times than I like to remember. Sounds like your granddaughter has the hang of it though. Under normal circumstances I would ask you if you are going out on your birthday but I fear the answer is probably not. Hope you have a good day tomorrow anyway.
cherry well I am doing a painting by numbers. Not done one since I was a child (actually I don’t remember doing one then either ). A friend and I decided to do one each during lockdown. It has produced a lot of laughter for us both. No natural talent I’m afraid. As for the sewing. I am in the middle of about 3 different things. I have a wall hanging that is finished but needs backing and mounting. 2 cushion covers that are cut but need sewing together and a lap quilt for me for this coming winter (actually it was for last winter but I never got round to it ?) As you can see, I am very good at starting things but not finishing them. I like your idea of giving your neighbour something to watch. She would probably have an attack of the vapours ?

I hope the car gets collected tomorrow and it is soon fixed and back with you. I think then a trip to the sea is in order.

Oh Dreamkeeper what a disappointment! It wasn’t a day to be stuck indoors (at least not here - we gardened most of the day as the rain has turned the garden into a jungle). It doesn’t sound too good, being stuck in when the fire alarm goes off. I thought everyone had to evacuate the building. Shouldn’t you have been carried off by a hefty dishy fireman?

I had an exciting day yesterday. My DS rang early to say he was on his way over with DiL and DGS. DGS has been having trouble settling to sleep, and its been recommended that he have a weighted blanket especially for children with dyslexia. At around £70! So we thought a trial with a heavy throw I have would be an idea first! We entertained in the garden - distancing properly - and then I had a quick stand up cuddle with DGS as he was leaving. We’re pre-empting Boris’ next relaxation and making our own bubble of five! Then after lunch a couple of friends popped by for tea and cake. Again distancing in the garden. But we would have sat similarly outside when the sun was shining last year, so it all felt wonderfully normal!

I hope your bruises are subsiding Maw. Is it a sign of age when embarrassment at our inability to get up overtakes any feelings of pain?

A few words before nightfall,and rather a disappointing day for us both.
After lunch and a rest,checking the weather we could see there was plenty of warm sunshine amid a few dodgy clouds,so our green oases in the back garden was the place to be.
Heading out with sun hats,sunglasses,cushions etc we had only stepped outside our door when the fire alarm went off.
Feeling very down at mouth we knew that meant the doors and lifts would be out of action until the firemen attended, subsequently resetting certain buttons to get these areas back working.
We sat for some time after all the fuss had died down,once again picked up our gear and set off to our nearest lift..........still out of action,so we went along to the second lift, finding all doors locked.
Yes cell mates,we are back in our flat........ feeling more than a little disappointed,our small foray into the fresh air and sunshine thwarted.
Bah humbug and some!!!!!

We have managed an evening stroll,but the memory of a missed afternoon has not yet left our thoughts.

Feel sure we would have had far more fun down in the Argy Bargy Lemongrove!!!.......whilst a slice of Victoria Sponge would have gone down nicely.

Must be getting very emotional in my old age!
Watching and enjoying Songs of Praise this afternoon,when the scene was the beach of our Tenby tears started to roll down,sad to think we may never again visit our favourite place,an area that we enjoyed for some 25 years.
I really need to get out more!

Should the garage not show up tomorrow to take our car in for a renewal of a light bulb and its service, heads will certainly roll this time!

Hello, hello, hello - what a busy prison yard ?.

Woke up late, guilty as charged ?. Decided that I'd better do a penance so (after a cuppa and brekkie) I set about some chores. That's twice this month already ?.
Seems like I'm not the only one averse to cleaning here. Seeing that you are all such lovely company I think it could well be a small price of loveliness ?. Charleygirl I have absolutely no idea how either of our vacuum cleaners work, I asked one to clean up some flower petals on the floor a few days ago but it just looked at me in contempt. My WP wielded the said offending object and it duly obliged him ?.

Doodle, thanks for asking Grammaretto what a haddie is as I knew I must have been getting a bit muddled because I was thinking I was reading about a "nicknamed" procrastinator ?.
What is it that you are currently painting and currently sewing? My latest sketch was so poor I had to ditch it and will have go back to the drawing board, that's why my artwork is non artistic - I'm simply no good at it ?.

Let me say, all this debating about high or afternoon tea - just pass either over to me and I'll eat them both ?.

Oh Missedout, we know what you mean about groundhog day. Don't let it get you down. You do, however, keep up some activities -are you at all creative/arty? Perhaps a project or new hobby may ease that groundhog feeling. I've taken to doing jigsaws for the first time in donkey's years and developed an interest in photography of the very close up kind.

We always seem to have a plague of clothes moths in our home Grammaretto. Every year it's the same! The little sods managed to ear one of my WP's lovely sweaters before we caught the blighters this year grrh!
I have a spray and I always buy those deterrents you hang on the rail in the wardrobe but was too late this time round to stop their attack. I have managed to sneak up on a few and get rid of them though but they do keep coming ?.

Dreamkeeper, it was incredibly humid here yesterday and then it teemed down around 5pm. It's gorgeous here today. I do hope you manage to get to (or have done) sit down outside.

I like some of the suggestions you have all given me in regard to my weird neighbour but I don't think I dare follow any of them - me and my WP could end up being the ones reported. I'll put her peculiar behaviour out of my mind again for now but maybe next time (as long as she doesn't have the camera) maybe me and my WP will give her something to really watch ?.

I have had two walks today as the weather is so lovely. We live near open fields so very easy to distance.

I had another video of my 5 year old DGD riding her bike. She has really got the hang of no stabilisers. She Facetimed us yesterday to tell us all about it.
It is my birthday tomorrow and normally we would be down there with them. Last year my DiL made me a lovely cake but will have to make it myself this year!

Your neighbour is truly weird Cherry - does she think you are up to no good? I am afraid I would have to wave to her when she trains her binoculars on me - it might give her the shock she needs. Either that or buy net curtains .

Re afternoon tea- I think it depends on which part of the country one is/was brought up. I was brought up in Fife and certainly when I was in my teens afternoon tea was a knife and fork meal- maybe fish and chips or whatever but from memory, there were cakes to go with the tea afterwards. So a mix of savoury and sweet but I do not remember having eg apple crumble or an icecream instead of cakes. There was always bread and butter to go with the meal.

It is a perfect day here- glorious sunshine and my washing drying outside.

I do hope your car is picked up tomorrow for its MOT and service and not much is wrong with the car.

I had to find a photo from the menu of a restaurant I have been to. Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, I don't remember eating all this though.

Almost afternoon but making an appearance because hopefully after lunch we may have the privilage of sitting awhile in our garden oases,again how thoughtful of our weather,needful rain with the dusk but lovely sunshine during the day!!!!

Whilst although living in a flat now CharleyG we are fortunate in having both a laundry room with washers and driers,or we can have our own.
We have our own plus an airer in our larger than average bathroom and although having had a lifetime of using an outdoor clothes line,this works just brilliantly...........and I do not use up much shoe leather!!
A bonus these days!!
Had 3 washes yesterday,all dry by this morning using the airer only,ironing tomorrow is the plan.

I do think you have worked out a great plan Bradfordlass with cleaning,and if it works,carry on indeed.

Although we came from too much space for two, it is surprising how well we havc worked out this flat
Granted I realised from the start that we must not even consider the furniture and trappings we had,we really had to be ruthless and start afresh......I say we, but really it was all very much down to me!!
A few surprised people raised their eyebrows when we said we had turned our second, smaller bedroom into both a dressing room and study............but on actually seeing it they can see and note it serves us both so well.
On both main walls we have a wardrobe system,whilst across the window wall,and wall to wall we have a desk,large enough to serve us both with my PC and my man`s All in One system........walls and underneath area hold files,printer and shredder,whilst we have 2 swivel chairs..........these work for the desk......... and for the fitting of clothes etc.
I bet your table top works equally well for both your work,and what is more ..........no leg work needed but look how much more productive you can be!!!!
Plus you are more easily able to rest your painful back!!

My SIL had trouble with clothes moths too and carpet moths. They are difficult to get rid of I understand. I agree, nice to have a chat in person. Glad you GC are ok and doing well.
I think many have the urge to have a holiday. Booking in this country seems the most sensible option as quarantine won’t be needed. Have a good day.

Afternoon Tea these days is usually a treat. Somewhere where you are served delicacies like those in your photo. I have received gift vouchers for birthdays to have tea in a posh hotel or country house. I love the treat but so expensive for what you get.
I’m not sure I’d let anyone clean my house. I’d be to embarrassed if they found dirty nooks and crannies and thought hmm she didn’t clean this very well ?

It was lovely to hear from our son about his DC. and that they are doing really well despite the lockdown.
This is why speaking to someone in person is so important.
He loves working from home too and will miss that if and when he has to go into the office.

He has booked a holiday (in this country) although the place they go to is still closed, he said it is lovely to have something to look forward to.

The posh hotels in Edinburgh have restaurants that do posh teas. The menu will be be similar to the Langham ..
I have never been never been invited .

Missedout I live in slut's corner here and I am expecting a nephew by marriage any day and the hall, downstairs loo, living room and large kitchen will all be up to standard. I am not too sure whose standard, but it will be somebody.

I had washing hanging out before 8am today- that I think is one reason why I could not live in a flat- I do like to hang washing out- I have never used a tumble drier in my life except in a laundrette.

I changed the vacuum bag yesterday- I must find out how to switch the machine on. I have a vacuum cleaner up and downstairs so that there are no accidents carrying one up and down.

Grammaretto YAY! glad you got a visit - and cake, yummy.

In our house we just had 3 meals: breakfast, lunch and tea at 5pm, 'afternoon tea' was something you only had if you were posh or rich enough to visit a cafe. Which we wuzzn't.

In the posh hotels of Auckland, where AT - English style, will cost £36 a head you'll get tiny sandwiches, mini cakes, savouries, tea/coffee, it's a special occasion treat and used for birthday and other celebrations.

The picture is of the Langham High Tea when it only cost £30 and was my grandson's wish.

Almost everyone here, whether at home or office will have a 'smoko break' (no longer for a cigarette) at 11am and 3pm; usually just a cuppa and a cake, biscuit or savoury.
I'd love a Finnan Haddie can't get it here.

Cleaning I have always hated it and had a very close friend of the same ilk.
We decided to swap - she cleaned my house, I did hers and it worked beautifully. It has a whole different psychological basis: feeling more like helping rather than a boring chore.

I've just made a pan of warming pumpkin soup; a little too warming as I didn't gauge the Indian spices very well.
I'll be in the hot seat tomorrow.

Not sure if you will be able to see the 2nd picture, it's from my electric blanket and for some reason, just tickled my cheeky funny bone.

Ah thanks for the explanation grammaretto . You just brought back a childhood memory for me. My mother used to cook haddock for me for tea (not high tea just teatime tea ?) DH doesn’t like fish so we haven’t had any for years.

panache I am sewing and painting on the same table. It is chaotic but when you live in a flat, sometimes there is not enough room for hobbies. Normally I would not do both at the same time but I am trying to do the painting around making some quilted mats for someone. I can only spend a short while painting before my back aches so then I do some quilting then back to the painting again.?
mamissimo nice to have lots of pictures of your DGC growing up, especially as they live so far away. You could always leave some of your cake in the kitchen for the nighttime nibblers ?

The weather has been awful so we can't even enjoy the garden.
However we had the family quiz tonight which was fun though 3 families were missing because they were having guests for dinner (Denmark) sleeping in a tent in the garden with their children (England) or couldn't get on zoom.

BTW Haddie as in Ham and Haddie is smoked haddock. It's a traditional Scottish High Tea dish. I've not had it for years.

Hello fellow inmates. Iam64’s reference to Groundhog day struck a chord! Exercise bike, cycle round the garden, hula hoop, shower, medication, lunch, bit of IT.....

However, the freezer is a bit low so I have made a large casserole, we'll eat some tomorrow and there will be enough left over for 2 x 2 frozen portions. I've also made a cake and a store cupboard dessert. My back is aching badly now.

Cherry, your neighbours sound truly weird. I have a picture in my mind of somehow doctoring the opera glasses so they leave big black circles round their eyes. I live in hope.

For those who are like me and don't rate housework (CharleyGirl and Mamissimo come to mind) but may have a lockdown/bubble visitor beating a path to the toilet, my thought is to close all doors except those en route to the toilet and have a quick dust only where your visitors will pass.

One of my daughter-in-laws keeps sending lovely photos of the little ones and what they are up to. They are over 200 miles away. They think they have all had Covid-19. I hear very little from my other DGD's parents, but believe that they just don't consider getting in touch very often, not that they are hostile.

Perhaps tomorrow will be a new start, here's hoping we get out of our time loop soon.

In the meantime, please Doodle a special soporific hot chocolate for bedtime. Thank you.

You are certainly "My kind of gal" *Doodle for although true enough I set too once a week when able,it is more a flick than a good old clean,but quite frankly we both have come to the conclusion, our cleaning lady was not as good as we thought............so perhaps ....if the bottles flow I might take it up as a hobby!

panache sorry about the double loss for your friend. She must be deeply shaken. I do so hope you are able to make your trip to the sea soon too. We haven’t been out today. The weekends are busy here and it’s difficult to avoid people. My turn to water the baskets today. One week on they are looking more sprightly. I have kept myself occupied sewing and painting today. I refuse to do housework at the weekend (I quite often don’t do it during the week either ?) Nice drink on the balcony tonight for an hour and now we have torrential rain. Good to be indoors now. ?

Evening all ?. That was a close shave ..... I just started my post by typing in the username box ? ?. The question is ... would it actually post? Probably not ?.

Can I ask if any of you here owns a pair of opera glasses? If so, would you use them anywhere other than the opera/theatre? My peculiar neighbour, who took photos of us from her bedroom window a couple of weeks back, has been peering through a pair of opera glasses at us now. How weird is that? She'll be using a telescope next or taking photos with a telescopic lens ? . I don't know what she finds so fascinating ?.

My WP and me are planning our escape, weather permitting, for Monday. We don't necessarily want the weather to be too nice in case that draws crowding but we don't want it to rain. We don't plan to go far, less than two miles but we want to be able to smell and hear the sea instead of just seeing our small patch of it afforded us from our front bedroom window. I'm starting to feel a teeny bit ? of people with more freedom, even if I do still want them to enjoy it. We've dug out a flask and I'll make a walnut loaf tomorrow to take with us. My WP checked the car and it's running okay so ?.

BradfordLass, I'm glad the funeral went okay and without any unpleasant encounter. You can relax easy now.

Oh Dreamkeeper, so sorry to hear of the double tragedy your friend has had in her family. These events do remind us of our own mortality and I can imagine that, considering your particular personal circumstances, it has affected you in that way. Don't dwell on that, love each moment and Mo Ment the love ?

It was great to hear about his family, his work etc. Although we see them on zoom it's not the same.

Oh! my word HELP!!!!!

Only last early evening I posted and now since then there are an avalanche of lovely newsy messages to read through ..............and hopefully do justice too!

Although thunderstorms are forecast for our area again we have lovely warm sunshine though a tad breezy,we have just enjoyed a pleasant stroll, pleased to say my man has already booked another for later on,so obviously feels better.
Trouble is he is not one to complain so I have to do a lot of guesswork!!

This morning started with some very sad news , a friend of our very dear friends lost his life this week,not with Covid but he suffered greatly because of it.... and lack of following up on his cancer treatment.
His wife not only had this sad news to contend with but two days later her sister also passed away.
Emotionally it all effects us both and especially my dear man,yet once he was one of these real men whom could stand up tall and deal with such things.

Am sorry hearing of your fall Maw,commiserations indeed,never good as we get older as the whole body.....and our pride.... takes a bit of a battering.
Hope you are fully recovered now.
Don`t go badgering our burly firemen or handsome ambulance men..........we are already on the waiting list here!!!!

Call it what you will,probably an afternoon cum high tea in this case!
It arrived on a large platter complete with red/white and blue napkins.It did need 2 knives, fork, and spoon, all in all was very filling and we needed no further meal later yesterday.So was both tea and supper combined......would last me a week!
It helped break the monotony!

I appreciate the views about my dear man driving but I can assure you,although he was banned awhile following his stroke in 2018,then following his later diagnoses of a terminal illness, he could not walk and there were periods when we both used wheelchairs.
On moving here after some months he found he could slowly manage a walk to our dining hall,we worked on that,he is a very determined man and has retained this throughout thankfully.
After some weeks,perhaps months later he tried driving just a half mile to our Surgery.He has managed that together with a small walk overlooking our Marina,and was so uplifted.Next he managed as far as our Hospital some (6 miles) for several months and has only halted since we went into lockdown and both of us were shielded.
It is so kind of you in pressing this point but please believe me,I am a real mother hen and if anything I am watching over him too much.
True enough there are days when even a walk about is out,but on the whole,he does quite well.

I hope no one here comes to rely on my cleaning!!!!
Because quite frankly I cannot wait for our cleaner to return,yes its not that large a space,but I am very limited in my movements...... so can only reach middle ground!!!
