These are figures added in from back in April which were not included before apparently from care homes where although Covid was mentioned It was not given as the main cause.

Anyone else read there were 8,000 new cases in a day last week? I don't think it's coming down fast enough at all. We are continuing to be very careful.

I don't think that's correct Pantglas. Originally, people in care homes or dying at home weren't included in the UK figures and my understanding is that the reason for the jump yesterday was because people being tested by a private provider weren't being counted. There is also the question of people who already have serious underlying conditions, who have died prematurely as a result of Covid-19, not being counted as Covid-19 deaths.

We won't actually know until excess deaths are analysed. I think the UK's squirming doesn't cover up the fact that our death rate is still high and not dropping as quickly as it has done in other countries.

Something very similar happened to Spain’s figures ten days ago where they dropped from 28000+ dead, down to 26000+ overnight. Their deaths per day also plummeted from around 100 per day to single figures, and yesterday to zero.

It appears that they have changed to only counting deaths with a lab tested positive which of course will show less. In UK and Belgium, all deaths are counted, where the virus is suspected by a medical practitioner.

Good to see the numbers going down. Wish more people were following the guidelines.

Reason given on Government website is "Daily and total case counts are as of 1 June 2020. Daily and total deaths are as of 31 May 2020." and "Additional deaths, identified from Pillar 2 testing in England, have been added to the data over the last week. In total 445 deaths have been added, with dates of death back to 26 April 2020.
445 plus today's 111 gives you the 556

Yes we noticed this too tonight something to do with changing the way it was being recorded from 1st June? My DCs spotted it straight away

Cant believe anything they say. Just make it up really. Wondered why they'd changed the format of the briefing tonight.
Matt Hancock stutters so much it makes us suspicious. If he says that's a very good question one more time arrrghh.

Think they can distract us ....think again boys

Matt Hancock clearly said there were 111 deaths since yesterday ...so why did the total jump by 556 ?

Scottish figurefor the same 24 hours was one

.Difficult to make a mistake with one.so can we assume Hancock misread 556 for 111 and if the 556 is the right figure why in any gods name you want to ask is the UK government hell bent on "easing" the lockdown ..there has been (if 556 is the right number) close to 2000 deaths in the past 7 days
