Cleaning

What have I got wrong? People are cleaning and disinfecting and deep cleaning. Why? And just what is deep cleaning.

I am disabled and my cleaner is on full pay furlough. I am managing my washing and eating but that is about it. As far as the house is concerned I am a right Dirty Gertie.

Shopping is put in my porch and then I put it on the hall chest of drawers. Shiny stuff stays there 6 days. Cardboard and paper for 3 days. Cold stuff gets wrapped in a decontaminated plastic bag (i.e. one that has been in the pile for 6 days) and decanted into a plastic box when I have the energy. Frozen stuff gets double decanted (emptied into one plastic box and then a second) and put in the freezer.

Post is opened and decanted to the floor and the envelopes thrown away and the contents looked at after a hand wash.

My problem is that I feel I am missing out on something as I am not disinfecting because this is a virus we are dealing with; not a germ. However I am reluctant to assume that I have got it right and everyone else is wrong.

Who is up the gum tree?

I love this M33ary bless your heart

I leave the post for 3 days except if it’s NHS then I open it

I m so happy that NHS letters are so different to all other post and carry no nasty viruses ???

Good girl. Redeemed!

I wipe down items with milton leave shoes at door and wash my hands thoroughly. Wash fruit normally. So far so good 13 weeks in.

My DH donated blood a couple of weeks ago. He had a text saying wear a mask if possible, so he did.

Our DIL is a Donor Carer for the National Blood Service, she was working the day he donated.

She commented on the mask, the staff didn’t know donors had been asked to wear them, they wondered why so many people had them on!

(The staff were of course wearing masks and other PPE).

I have always been careful. Once saw assistant sneezing over the cooked meat counter and girl coming in the bakers after putting the bins out and serving unwrapped bread without washing hands.
Because of my age and vulnerability after my on line delivery I wipe everything with microfibres cloth soaked in bleach solution. Saw on TV a teaspoonful of bleach in a litre of water is the best. Anti bacterial products useless against viruses.
My help still comes but keeps her distance and is always washing her hands.

BlueSky Sat 20-Jun-20 12:06:49

Those vulnerable people who never left the house and yet caught the virus, were they visited by a district nurse/carer? Hard to believe it would be just the groceries delivered.

JaneRn Sat 20-Jun-20 11:52:35

Anti bacterial products are designed for just that, to protect against bacteria, and Covid 19 is a virus not bacteria.

Question - if you wash vegetables and fruit in soap and water how many times do you have to rinse them to get rid of the smell, by which time I suspect they would be inedible?

Jane10 Sat 20-Jun-20 11:51:49

Kim19- I only like dusting with my fab Pledge fluffy duster thingy with the long handle. Also only do it fortnightly whether it needs to be done or not.
Back up on my pedestal in sluts corner.

Riggie Sat 20-Jun-20 11:50:13

Our house is a tip!
But I know people who clean the whole housebwith bleach regularly without covid so goodness knkws what they are doing now!! They have the sort of decor that can be qiped daily - laminate floors, leather sofas etc and hardly any possessions! We have carpets, fabrics and lots of stuff

handbaghoarder Sat 20-Jun-20 11:40:28

Another one here who does the minimum. Have food delivered but just put it away. Spray worktops with bleach cleaner and wash hands. Dont read newspaper while eating- nothing worth reading anyway. Leave plastic wrapped parcels 2/3 days before opening ( QVC gives you 60 days to return so no rush there ?). Have only left house twice since lockdown so no precautions needed there

Sussexborn Sat 20-Jun-20 11:34:16

Oops! OH just brought me up a parcel delivery that is one of my presents to myself. I just opened it - a day early.

When OH was made redundant three times in one year during the 90s he worked briefly in insurance. One of the questions to ask would be clients was how they viewed risk. There are five stages from terrified to reckless. Of course if you have serious health issues then your attitude may well change. Even more so if you are sheltering someone else.

vickya Sat 20-Jun-20 11:32:12

"Do you all do this cleaning regime when we have a bad year of flu with thousands dying, and yes it does happen some years"
Bluebelle you are quite right. In fact the statistics show there are no more people actually dying this year than some other years when there was no lockdown.

It is hard not to feel scared with all the media noise about vulnerable people and how to protect yourself and everyone. I worried a lot about getting deliveries, not shopping myself. My daughters wanted me to stop and to get medication delivered, which i did, I did carry on walking in the park as I need exercise but people tend to keep clear and I go very early. I am feeling less worried now and have been to a supermarket a few times in the OAP times. I had to go to the PO too and that felt worse as small and less room to avoid staff and other people. I wiped things from the shopping once when they arrived. I wash my hands now after unpacking and when I get home after being out.

Just like to issue a warning to all, that you may not know. DO NOT LEAVE HAND SANITISER IN YOUR CAR ON A HOT DAY. IT IS HIGHLY INFLAMABLE AND HAS BEEN KNOWN TO START FIRES IN CARS.

Gingergirl Sat 20-Jun-20 11:15:11

I agree. What does disinfectant and antibacterial stuff actually do....I thought it killed bacteria, not viruses. Infact before all of this, I read that hospitals were considering not using sanitisers any more as they cause more bacteria than kill but that’s a slightly different issue. So many anomalies, I think truth is, no one has the answers. The worst advice I have heard so far I thought, came from a virologist on the radio. I just do what enables me to sleep at night!

Gwenisgreat1 Sat 20-Jun-20 11:14:06

Have to admit I now have a ritual (no idea if it does any good), going round with a disinfectant wipe, wiping all door handles, letterboxes, light switches, phones, keyboards etc. Then I take another wipe and wipe round the toilets, flushers, etc. Takes about 10 - 15 mins. Then start on my normal cleaning.

Sooze58 Sat 20-Jun-20 11:08:47

I’m with @BlueBelle, most of our shopping is click & collect but some in shops. I just sanitise/wash hands well depending on where I am and that’s it. Tried to clean whilst my cleaner not coming but noes she’s back, so things are a bit more ship shape. I’m no expert but I think the most risk is person to person transmission!

Thecatshatontgemat Sat 20-Jun-20 11:06:41

Blimey.
I don't do any of that.
Out to the supermarket, wash hands, store stuff away....
Sorted!

polnan Sat 20-Jun-20 11:06:37

just wash my hands, over 70, no underlying health issues, I do get sick and tired of saying that.

washed stuff occasionally, then feel just plain silly,
not been to shops at all

want to go and get my tv mag. as Sainsburys , delivery, out of stock, very annoying! LOL

not scared, just don`t want to queue!! don`t like the change of lifestyle, I am spoiled.

Pinkrinse Sat 20-Jun-20 11:05:37

I don't do anything different other than always washing my hands when I come in from outside. I do not quarantine shopping, wash shopping, or anything like that and my husband and I are still alive and well.

Phloembundle Sat 20-Jun-20 11:05:27

I do nothing whatsoever.

Kim19 Sat 20-Jun-20 11:04:32

Jane10 like the sound of your relaxed cleaning routine but still too much for me and 'liking' dusting? Well, I'm having to rethink my pedestal status for you!

GoldenAge Sat 20-Jun-20 11:00:06

NanaHev - first of all cut yourself a bit of slack - you are disabled and that’s why you need a cleaner; secondly, you can now have your cleaner back in your house if you feel safe to do so; thirdly, the deep clean is something that decent restaurants have always done on a regular basis like operating theatres to avoid contamination and it does involve anti-bacterial spraying. The whole point about the public health advice to use Anti-bac hand sanitiser is that the alcohol in it does kill viruses but hand washing is just the best! Personally we do open mail and parcels immediately then wash hands and through packing away and wash hands again - ha ha. I have asked my cleaner to return next week as in balance I think the danger from the build up of dust is probably far greater than that from the cleaner who will be wearing full PPE

silverlining48 Sat 20-Jun-20 10:52:47

I Live close to London where it’s been worse than most places but am with the slack Alice brigade and just wash hands and am trying to make masks ?.
I Havnt seen anything from the scientists to say I must disinfect every thing. Trouble is when food is delivered I go into panic mode so all thoughts of detol etc go out of the window.

M33ARY Sat 20-Jun-20 10:47:01

I leave the post for 3 days except it’s NHS then I open it and wash my hands again. I clean the shopping with hibiscrub and water solution. We are shielding so no one has come in since March. I do clean the house but only as I have done before Covid. Stay well everyone

Caro57 Sat 20-Jun-20 10:44:41

I saw something claiming to be ‘anti-viral’ spray cleaner - a new one on me. If it’s genuine why isn’t it used for herpes and the like?
