Re the request for volunteers aged 65+ to be part of the trials for the new vaccination, are any of you thinking of helping out? I’m interested but a bit anxious despite being a fir and healthy 66 year old! Anything I can do to speed up the process of vaccination approval appeals to me. Any thoughts?

Signed up 2 days ago! Sounds like there's lots of us over 65s prepared to help out. If this sample is anything to go by, maybe there are TOO many of us !

I would want my ACs and GCs to benefit from a vaccine as long as it had been tested appropriately. If I'm not prepared to take part in testing, I would feel a parasite on others' generosity. said by LJP1

I was about to say no until I read the above, now I'll give it serious thought, thank you LJP1

Aepgirl Thu 20-Aug-20 10:38:24

I have signed up, but had no contact. However, when (if) the time comes I know I will be thinking very gard before saying ‘yes’.

I don't know how anyone's going to get a vacciene that fully tested without some trials taking place. Can't see why our generation shouldn't be willing to offer services as guinepigs, we aren't of childbearing age, we aren't essential workers. I know some of us do look after GCs but someone has to be in the trial. I am deeply sceptical of vaccinations but in this case I think the risk is worth it, if anyone is to be damaged by this vacciene surely it should be us older people who have already lived a good long time. Or maybe it should be trialled on people in third world countries who have less of a safety net - not something I could condone if I'm personally unwilling to take the risk....

LuckyFour Thu 20-Aug-20 10:26:14

No, I wouldn't risk it at 73. Crazy idea. I have a lot to live for and don't want to take unnecessary risks. I don't think it's selfish because my Dh and my family need me.

Thanks a lot for all your interesting replies! Helps put things in perspective and will consider going ahead - fingers crossed we all get out of this soon!

Thank you to all the unselfish, kindly people volunteering for the benefit of us all. flowers flowers

I’ve registered to take part as I’m a fit and healthy 69yr old and feel it’s the least I can do. Haven’t heard anything yet. I understand others reservations and who knows if I am chosen I may change my mind.

Gmere64 Thu 20-Aug-20 09:53:36

No way am I offering my services for an unproven vaccination, thanks very much.

barbaralynne Thu 20-Aug-20 09:47:04

I have signed up as has my husband. Neither of us has been contacted yet. However, if you were to sign up but then changed your mind, the information I read makes it clear that you can withdraw from the research at any time.

LJP1 Thu 20-Aug-20 09:29:43

I'm signed in and doing blood tests for Biobank.

I would want my ACs and GCs to benefit from a vaccine as long as it had been tested appropriately. If I'm not prepared to take part in testing, I would feel a parasite on others' generosity.

Please don't take offense. We are all different and that is the way I see it.

spabbygirl Thu 20-Aug-20 09:25:13

I would be there like a shot, it has been well tested so far on lots of people but at 63 I am slightly too young.
They won't ask/expect you to expose yourself to the bug because that would be unethical and is not allowed.
Pharmaceutical rules are so strong in the uk any problems would have come up by now. The only thing is you won't know if its the real vaccine you're getting or a placebo

funwithgrandma Thu 20-Aug-20 09:24:17

I agree with you BlueBelle.

Firecracker123 Thu 20-Aug-20 09:24:11

My husband and I both signed up on Monday.

TrendyNannie6 Thu 20-Aug-20 09:17:45

Nope

Apparently OZ has put in an order for 25 million shots, (that's one each) to be manufactured here.
I'll be at the end of the queue and by the time they get there we'll know whether it works or not; I'll be long gone anyway! grin
Good Health

Alegrias Wed 19-Aug-20 13:26:07

anyway....

Reverting to what the OP asked, I found this about signing up for future trials:
www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/research/coronavirus-vaccine-research/

Also this, which explains how we can develop a vaccine quickly if we need to, which clearly we need to do now.
wellcome.ac.uk/news/how-can-we-develop-covid-19-vaccine-quickly

BlueBelle Tue 18-Aug-20 22:14:06

That’s fine you can take my place Algerias you should thank me for letting you one place up in the queue ??having spent many years working in the NHS I m well aware of pharmaceuticals and how they work

Alegrias Tue 18-Aug-20 20:10:15

Thank you sillymoo, aquafish, B9exchange, notagran55 and SueDonim I admire you all and anyone else I've missed for taking part in the trials.
I get a bit exasperated with the attitudes around this being "rushed through" and I'll be at the front of the queue, if they let me, when we have an approved vaccine.

BlueBelle Tue 18-Aug-20 19:42:17

I wouldn’t have it at this stage if you paid me and I don’t set any store by a rushed through vaccination programme
I believe most pharmaceuticals are in this for the money and
I m not inspired by it one bit
Neither will I be queuing up to have the vaccination when it is offered to all, until they are sure it’s a)going to work and b)do no damage which could take years
I would rather they concentrated on medication to stop it turning into the lung problem needing induced breathing

SueDonim Tue 18-Aug-20 19:33:49

I signed up a while back although I’ve not heard anything. A younger friend has already had one trial dose and is to have another soon. She’s had no side effects whatsoever.

I decided to take one for the team in the hope that we may all get back to a more normal life. You’re welcome.

NotAGran55 Tue 18-Aug-20 19:12:14

I signed up to the Oxford trial and was accepted. However as I wasn’t in a role with much contact with the human race I decided not to go ahead . The place was better being taken by a key-worker etc.

B9exchange Tue 18-Aug-20 19:04:23

I signed up too but not heard anything. You would either get the vaccine or a placebo, so you would only do it to help the research, but if they don't get enough of an older agegroup sample, they won't be able to test it properly. Just feel I should do my bit.

ayse Tue 18-Aug-20 18:57:25

My DD2 is very concerned about vaccinations that have not been rigorously tested. Well done.

Personally, I don’t want to be involved in the testing just yet because of all the scare stories going round. I just don’t trust the drug companies especially those that originate in the USA. Apparently in the States they have a vaccine compensation fund for damage done by badly tested vaccines. If they usually take 7 years to develop I’m not yet prepared to put myself at any risk. I’d rather self isolated as far as possible.

Good luck, whatever you decide.
